Summary

Bianca St. Germain works at a Night House, a place where vampires like the aristocratic Jeremiah Archer, pay to feed on humans, and she doesn’t much care what others think of her. The money is good, and at least there, she’s safe. Bianca also doesn’t care that the Night House is killing her. All she cares about is: nauth, the highly addictive poison in vampire bites that brings a euphoria like no drug ever could.

But when Bianca meets James, a reclusive empath who feels everything she does, for the first time, she considers a life outside of the Night House and a someone worth living for. But Jeremiah has decided to keep Bianca for himself; he won’t allow her to walk away.

As she allows her feelings for James to grow, she struggles to contain nauth's strong hold on her life. If they are to have a future, James must make her see what she's worth, what she means to him, before Jeremiah and nauth claim her for good.

My Review

The Night House was both equally terrifying and sweet. It was a well-told story and one that I enjoyed reading. I loved these characters, cheered them on, felt disdain for the villains, and hoped for an almost impossible happily-every-after ending.

Let's talk about the terrifying aspects of the story... The vampires look like beautiful humans, but they're definitely predators. They drink blood, kill humans, and come with the usual speed and strength of the undead. Bianca's relationship with them is rather dangerous and tenuous. I was on the edge of my seat for much of the book and some parts were rather gruesome. The story definitely had some blood and gore. There were also some fighting parts that were well done, but violent, which fit the setting and circumstances.

On to the sweet part... I immediately connected with the main characters, Bianca and James. They both live in extreme circumstances and find in each other a certain control and peace that they haven't experienced before and desperately need. They give each other hope for a possible future; a future that had looked rather bleak. I loved that they made each other better and that their relationship started by happenstance, grew to friendship, and then to the possibility of something more. It was sweet and felt authentic.

I liked jumping back and forth between the two POV's. It created added tension to the plot and gave me a great view into what both Bianca and James were thinking. I also liked that it gave the other minor characters more weight and I got to know them better than if the POV would have just been from one of the characters. It also helped connect the characters' and their link to each other more. The plot was intense and definitely climaxed well. I wasn't disappointed and basically couldn't put this down because I had to find out what would happen next.

If you enjoy paranormal thrillers, then I'd definitely recommend The Night House. It had everything you'd expect from the genre balanced with some humor and a sweet romance that had an edge to it. I'll definitely be checking out Rachel Tafoya's next book.

Content: Violence, some innuendo and swearing.

I'm so glad you liked this! It's nearing the top of my personal reading list and I wasn't sure if it would be the real thing. Real no glitter vampires. Yeah. Great review:)

  6. I like that the book is in part horror, suspense and romance. I've actually never really read a book where there's gore, so I think I'm both scared and intrigued for The Night House. I'm also really liking the way you described the relationship between Bianca and James. Anything that isn't insta-love is a go for me.

  8. Ooh I have to add this one to my TBR! I like sound of vampires in this book, and for them to be brought across in a creepy manner. The alternating POVs and easy to connect with characters sound great as well. I really have to pick this one up.
