Summary

Not everyone who goes into the woods comes out…

It was supposed to be a short hike, a way for Fletcher and Adam to kill time one boring afternoon. But when day turns into night and neither boy returns home, their town is thrown into turmoil.

Search teams comb through the forest. Then Avery, the police chief’s daughter, stumbles on a body. It’s Fletcher- disoriented, beaten, and covered in blood. He has no memory of the incident, and worse yet, he has no idea what happened to the still missing Adam…

As danger and suspicion grow, one thing becomes very clear. No one can escape the truth.

There really is so much I love about writing thrillers and writing for young adults and of course, writing thrillers for young adults! Writing thrillers in and of itself is really fun. I love to be scared—I guess I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie that way, and I love to be the one to turn the screws to frighten my characters just enough. I love the fast pace and the surge of emotions—which is also why I love writing for young adults! Young adults lives are constantly moving, constantly going at a faster-than-life pace and so are their emotions. Friends, boyfriends, families, school, job, life—it’s the thrum of teen life and I like to mirror that in my books as much as possible. It’s also fun, of course, to do some manipulating and twisting and turning to keep the suspense up.

At the same time, I find writing for young adults way more challenging than writing for adults. The YA set is so detail oriented and they know in a heartbeat if something in my story or voice doesn’t sound authentic. Teens aren’t dumb and they pay attention; they’re not easily fooled and won’t take being written down to or patronized. They recognize an adult trying to force a huge moral lesson on them or someone writing a bunch of stereotypical teens while saying they “get” the teen set. I love the challenge that puts on me—it keeps me on my toes and constantly listening and paying attention, which a writer should be doing. Just an example of teens versus adults—in one of my YA books, I change a character’s name by mistake. One time, one small aside—and I get notes about it every day! Teen readers are on it, man.

I’ll probably always write books for teens and adults, but YA might be where my heart is!

  1. What a creepy cover! Since I like to go camping but hate being scared this is definitely not the book for me... :/

The opening line of the blurb has me. Creepy but it sounds amazing.
