Summary

Patient Twenty-nine.

A monster roams the halls of Soothing Hills Asylum. Three girls dead. 29 is endowed with the curse…or gift of perception. She hears messages in music, sees lyrics in paintings. And the corn. A lifetime asylum resident, the orchestral corn music is the only constant in her life.

Mason, a new, kind orderly, sees 29 as a woman, not a lunatic. And as his belief in her grows, so does her self- confidence. That perhaps she might escape, might see the outside world.

But the monster has other plans. The missing girl's share one common thread...each was twenty-nine's cell mate.

Will she be next?

Guest Post: Treatments in the Victorian Asylum

My new book, Requiem Red, is set in a late 1800’s asylum. To prepare, I toured The Transallegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston West Virginia.

It was February and frigid. It was all too easy to imagine how incredibly cold and difficult it must have been to heat such a vast structure. During our tour, it was mentioned that some of the residents did indeed, freeze to death.

Treatments for asylum residents for the time period included the ever popular leeches, cold water immersion tanks,  vomiting tinctures, bloodletting, trepanning (drilling holes in the cranium) and lobotomies, and later, insulin shock therapy.

My main character Jane, has lived in the asylum since the age of three—never eaten outside of her room, never seen an opera, never really known love. Outside of her cat, Sebastian, whom she secretly rescued.

The cold, snow and ice, are important to Jane, ingrained in her memory. She covers her walls of sketches of cold—both good and evil. From the imposing snowflake- covered-spires of the asylum to beautiful images of ice skating and sleigh rides—experiences she has only read about.
Everything changes for Jane when a new, young orderly enters the asylum. He is intrigued by her musical prowess—at how she seems to glance at a piece and memorize it. At her odd beauty—her snowflake colored hair.

As his regard for her grows, so does her courage. That she may one day leave the asylum.

But something…roams the asylum at night. Women are disappearing from their beds, never to be seen again. Someone or something wants Jane to stay behind the asylum’s walls…forever.

Will their love be strong enough to shatter its icy hold on her?
