Summary

When Matt Knight left his career as a spy to marry the woman of his dreams, he thought he was in for a life of domestic bliss. But after adopting a baby girl and her teenage brother from China, he finds that being a father comes with its own set of challenges—problems that his work as an antiterrorism agent did nothing to prepare him for. Or so he thought. When a Scout campout with his son takes a terrifying turn, Matt realizes his past and present have just collided, with devastating consequences. Deep in the rugged mountains of Utah, a band of mercenaries lies in wait. The target: Matt Knight. Their orders come from a dangerous enemy from the former agent’s past, one who is bent on destroying everything Matt holds dear. While struggling to protect his son and the other Scouts, Matt is horrified to learn the full extent of the plan: his wife and baby have been taken too. Now the agent-turned-family man must draw on his years of combat training in an explosive battle to save those he loves—or die trying.

My Review

UNDERCOVER TARGET was such an enjoyable read! There was a frankness to the character and the story that brought in a feeling of authenticity. There were also some well-written moments of suspense as well as moments of humor and friendship. The story was engaging from the very beginning to the very end.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this book up. I've been burned so many times by LDS suspense that I wasn't sure I wanted to try for another. I'm so glad I gave the genre another try! The story was so endearing from the beginning, when a boy and his sister are adopted, to later on seeing how that boy and his new father struggle to connect and also defend their family. I loved the characters, including the eccentric friend Permelia. I loved seeing some of the characters grow as they dealt with inner struggles. There were a few parts that were over-the-top, but there was no preachiness or anything too unbelievable, making this a story I could get into.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Yes. This was such an enjoyable story. It was fun while also being suspenseful and had some LDS humor included as well. Now I'm curious about the first book in the series, Undercover Saint, and am looking forward to future releases from this author.

Summary

Going undercover in a Salt Lake City Mormon singles ward is not anti-terrorist agent Matthew Knight’s idea of a high-profile assignment. And he has deliberately avoided the Beehive State ever since his mother was murdered in Salt Lake City when he was eight years old. Ready at first to defy his orders from Washington, he resolves to stick around when he’s attacked by a man with ties to his past. But this undercover assignment is unlike any Matt has encountered before. Not only must he find the bad guys, but he also must deal with eccentric roommates, a giant of a bishop who is also his boss, a boisterous ex-Marine who wants to engage Matthew in a public display of ultimate machismo, and a seventy-five-year old woman named Permelia who wants to marry him. And these are small distractions compared to the beautiful Hope Winslow, a woman with mountains of hair who adopts him as a surrogate big brother. But before he can think about love, Matt has to get rid of a few terrorists, including his mother’s killer—and his own inner demons.

About the Author

Frank Holdaway

Frank Holdaway has been a fan of action thrillers from the time his father handed him an Alistair McLean novel at the age of ten. Since then, he has delighted in finding a tale that can take him from airport departure gate to destination hotel and back to long-term parking in such a state of engrossed concentration that he is in danger of missing his shuttle stop. When he’s not lost at the airport, he enjoys creating stories that he hopes will cause others to miss their bus. He currently lives with his wife and two kids in the foothills of Pleasant Grove, Utah.
