Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating—yet irresistible—Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her—and from the icy young man she has come to love.

Reignited
A Companion to the Reawakened Series
(Reawakened #0.5)
by Colleen Houck
YA Fantasy, Novella
Paperback & ebook, 80 Pages
February 21st 2017

Summary

A sibling rivalry.
A forbidden romance.
A spell that changes everything.

In Heliopolis secrets abound and passions ignite as chaos rises.

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Tiger’s Curse series and Reawakened comes a novella full of celestial marvel, passion, betrayal, and evil that will grow to reign over humanity forever.

Before Lily and Amon met, before the cosmos was in chaos and needed three brave brothers to fight off evil, there were four siblings who helped rule the earth.

Each sibling had a special gift. Osiris, the god of agriculture, helped mortals to grow and thrive in their natural environment. Isis, the goddess of creation, fostered health and wellness. Nephthys, the seer, was able to keep the balance between all living beings and the universe. But Seth, the youngest sibling, was left without any special powers. The Waters of Chaos, which granted each god’s talent, were running dry, and Seth was paying the price.

As time passed, however, Seth’s determination and willfulness resulted in a very special gift, one that should have granted him the ability to enact wondrous change. But Seth’s competitive childhood gave him a heart so cold and vacant that instead, his gift brought about great evil.

Seth was now the god of unmaking, the creator of disorder and destruction. And he was ready to seek his revenge, dominating all who got in his way.

David has a rule: don’t get close to women. He is ashamed of his unlawful past, a father in jail and an alcoholic mother. His triple date dare is a sure-fire way to keep women at bay. Who would love him with all his baggage anyway?

When he asks Laura out, David figures she will crash and burn as planned. He had no idea she would not only change the rules of his famous dating dare, but sneak her way into his heart.

Weekly Update #203, The books are piling up...

Welcome to my Weekly Update where I post my blog's schedule for the week! I'm linking up to The Sunday Post, hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, as well as to Tynga's Reviews for Stacking the Shelves showcasing the books I added to my shelves or Kindle this week, and It's Monday! What Are You Reading? hosted by Kathryn @ Book Date.

I recently looked at the books released so far this year that I have already missed reviewing... I've started working on catching up, but then I looked ahead... I always forget how busy March and April are for me. There are always so many new releases that I don't want to miss, but I also judge for the Whitney Awards and then have other books I just want to read. The books seem to be piling up, which of course I said I wouldn't do this year. Ha!

I also have a backlog of reviews. Terrible to be in that position, I know. ;) I've had other promotional posts and I didn't' want to just dump a bunch of reviews. It's kind of funny, in a way, that I already need to do some rescheduling and we're only half-way through February. I actually feel good about having extra posts though. It's nice to know I have them when I need them and I'm thinking I'll just schedule them ahead when I don't have other posts already scheduled even if it's a month or two out.

So, I'm curious... Do you guys feel like I do with spring releases and not wanting to pass them up? Do you schedule posts far in advance, posting a review a month or more after you've read the book? The most I've been scheduled ahead is a month, but that's fairly rare. Anyway, let me know. :)

And here's what to expect this week:

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Book Tour Launch for
The SEAL's Return
By Patricia Potter

Author Interview

1. What is your motivation behind The SEAL’s Return?

It’s the fourth in my Home to Covenant Falls series about veterans – men, women and even animals – who return home from the battlefield. The first, I thought, would be a stand-alone book about Josh Manning, a troubled and guilt-haunted Ranger returning home with a military dog as damaged as his new owner. It was inspired by a story in the New York Times about military dogs who came home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Josh’s best friend, the dog’s handler, died saving my hero’s life and left him a cabin in a small Colorado town. The cabin and the town – along with the town’s lady mayor – helped them both heal.

When I finished Josh’s story, I didn't want to leave Covenant Falls. I had fallen in love with the town and its quirky and good hearted citizens. I simply wanted to live there. Since I couldn’t do that, the next best thing was to revisit it.

Other stories started forming in my head.

Josh’s cabin was left to another veteran, this time a chopper pilot. He was followed by a battlefield surgical nurse.

And then it was time for my Navy SEAL, the fourth in the series. I’ve always wanted to write a book about a Navy SEAL. The training is the most difficult of any service and they do extraordinary deeds.   My SEAL is Jubal Pierce, and he’ll always be one of my favorite heroes. Half of his life has been in the SEALs. His total identity is being a SEAL. When a mission gone bad leaves him physically unable to continue as a SEAL he is lost and rudderless.

It takes a troubled kid, a buckskin Quarter Horse named Jacko and a lady doctor to make him realize he still has something to offer.

2. What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?

That they respect the military and reach out with a helping hand and understanding heart. And that love can often conquer even the greatest obstacles.

3. Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?

I think it’s when Jubal helps with the birth of a colt:

To Jubal, it was a miracle. Life beginning. He’d seen so much life ending, often in terrible ways. “It was . . .” Jubal stopped, unable to express the feelings surging through him. The colt and mother together touched him as nothing else had.

Jubal swallowed hard. An odd tug pulled at his heart. And a rare indecisiveness. He knew a lot about survival and weapons and killing. Not so much about something so new and innocent. . . For the first time he could remember, Jubal was at peace in his world.

4. If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

You never know when you’ll find your home.

5. Share something about you that is unique – maybe about how/where you write.

It’s probably not unique to most writers, but curiosity is a compulsion with me. I’ll start researching one subject – how much money does a Navy SEAL make? – and end up hours later following the Yellow Brick Road to quite different topics. Google is, quite simply, my downfall.

Liam Saunders-Chang is one of the last humans left on Mars. The son of two scientists who have been racing against time to create technology vital to humanity’s survival, Liam, along with his friend Phoebe, will be on the very last starliner to depart before Mars, like Earth before it, is destroyed.

YA Contemporary
Hardcover, Audiobook & ebook, 320 Pages
February 7th 2017 by Philomel Books

Summary

From National Book Award finalist Carrie Arcos–a fresh take on happily ever after, and friendship, that is anything but a love story.

When your namesake is Pablo Neruda—the greatest love poet of all time—finding “the one” should be easy. After all, sixteen-year-old aspiring artist Neruda Diaz has been in love many times before. So it’s only a matter of time before someone loves him back.

Callie could be that someone. She’s creative and edgy, and nothing like the girls Neruda typically falls for, so when a school assignment brings them together, he is pleasantly surprised to learn they have a lot in common. With his true love in reach and his artistic ambitions on track, everything is finally coming together.

But as Neruda begins to fall faster and harder than ever before, he is blindsided by the complicated nature of love—and art—in more ways than one. And when the relationships he’s looked to for guidance threaten to implode, Neruda must confront the reality that love is crazier, messier, and more beautiful than he ever realized—and riskier, too, than simply saying the words.

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released as well. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. Find out more here.

I've read the previous two books in this series, enjoyed the first book, loved the second, so I'm really looking forward to this newest release! It's my pick this week...

Summary

Beware the goblin men and the wares they sell.

All her life, nineteen-year-old Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, mysterious Goblin King. He is the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground, and the muse around which her music is composed. Yet, as Liesl helps shoulder the burden of running her family’s inn, her dreams of composition and childish fancies about the Goblin King must be set aside in favor of more practical concerns.

But when her sister Käthe is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Käthe go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts.

Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world.
