Summary

Struggling alone on the family farm, Abigail Tidwell knows exactly who to blame for her hardships: the Americans. If it weren’t for their part in the war, her father and brothers would be home rather than fighting abroad. But no amount of antipathy could have prepared her for the shocking sight of a wounded American soldier on her property, a man in dire need of her help. Grudgingly, Abigail tends to the soldier’s injuries and anticipates the satisfaction of turning him over to the authorities once he is healed. But fate has other plans. Captain Emmett Prescott remembers little of the ambush on his men by a group of Shawnee Indians and even less about how he arrived in the unfamiliar barn.

After being nursed back to health by beautiful, if reluctant, Abigail, Emmett would do anything to save the men he left behind—including forcibly enlisting Abigail’s help. Soon, Abigail finds herself caught between two countries at war. And as her attraction for Emmett grows, her conflicted heart engages in its own silent battle. But when she is accused of treason for her actions, her survival rests in the hands of the very man she once considered her enemy.

My Review

MY DEAREST ENEMY is a sweet story of a girl who wants to practice medicine at a time when men were generally only recognized in the profession, and the soldier who she aids and ends up on quite an adventure with. The story takes place during the Revolutionary War on the boundary between Canada and the Colonies, so there are parts of war woven through in places. Recommended to those who enjoy light historical romances.

I'm a huge fan of this author so I had fairly high expectations as I began this story. I also had been anticipating this story ever since I read the first chapter last year at the end of Miss Leslie's Secret. I was hoping that it would tell the story of Jamie from that book. It does not (I'm still hoping from a story of his family and him grown), but tells the story of another young man whose father comes from England to America.

I pretty much loved these characters from the beginning. Emmett is charming and knows it, but he's also loyal, honorable, and brave. I loved the way he cared for others. Abigail is somewhat headstrong and rash, but has such a big heart and is quite skilled in medicine. She is like a mother hen to this group of soldiers. I thought they were a great match for each other. I really enjoyed getting to know the other members of Emmett's group and the little bit we see of Abigail's father and brother. I would have liked more character development, or even more time spent with them.

The plot itself was enjoyable. I found the beginning and the end to be my favorite parts, as it lagged for me somewhat in the middle in places. I would have liked a little more emotion and depth added in. There were places that felt a little too trite and unrealistic in how some of the characters acted. I also had a few issues with some things towards the end, even though I was completely engrossed in finding out how everything would turn out. The ending was very well done. I didn't feel like the author tried to force it, but let the characters be true to themselves. It was a hard-won happily-ever-after and very sweet.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall enjoyable read. Definitely on the lighter side. I did have a few qualms, but the characters, a charming beginning, and a bittersweet ending won me over.

Content: Some innuendo and violence, but clean.
