Summary

A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.

Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.

Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is...I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just...mildly unhinged.”

Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants to fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.

And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.

From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

My Review

FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT was another fabulous addition to this Chicago Stars series. With a snarky, strong heroine, one former football player who is quite fierce while also charming, and a crazy scenario where sparks fly along with a little danger, makes for one fantastic story! Susan Elizabeth Phillips does what she does best: bringing strong characters and an engaging story to life. Readers will be in for one humorous, romantic, and page-turning read!

I must like books with leading men who are also athletes because this series is pretty much gold for me in that respect. The men are all rough and masculine, but also hard-driven and intelligent. In FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT Cooper plays his role well as a former pro football player. He still has a chip on his shoulder, but he is charming, strong, masculine, and intelligent. He's also a little uptight, especially as he's trying to figure out what to do after retiring from football. He's paired perfectly with Piper. Piper, Piper, Piper... I about died laughing when they have a chat in Cooper's office (there's a short line from it in the book's summary). Let's just say it is hilarious and Piper shows how well she thinks on her feet. She's rather brilliant, honestly. She is also such a fierce heroine. The girl can pretty much take out anyone she wants, but also has this really sweet side and is loyal and dependable. The way these two work together... The tension is really on in this one and I loved how they either wanted to strangle each other or kiss. And the dialogue and banter!!! Not only between Cooper and Piper, but also between Piper and her friends and Cooper and Heath (his agent) along with some others. On a side note, I rather enjoyed the cameos from former characters.

The plot was also so intriguing. There's quite a bit going on not only between Piper and Cooper, but also with Piper's friends, her business, Cooper's tenants, and the woman he wants to invest in his business. There's somewhat of an emotional roller-coaster during moments of suspense, friendship, loss, romance and danger. It was a story that was engaging from beginning to end.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Yes! One of the cleanest in mature content of this author's books and full of all the great things she does as a writer, with characters I loved and a romance and story I bought into. I couldn't be happier about Phillips adding to this series and would love for her to continue to do so.

I'm going to get in my disclaimer here. I prefer my books clean. Susan Elizabeth Phillips does not write those kinds of books. She writes adult romance and some of them are full of mature content while others have less of that content, but all her books have it. I skim where I need to. I read her books for the amazing characters, scenarios, humor, and romance. She is a fantastic author and how she turns out these characters who I fall in love with and situations that pull on my emotions every single time, I don't know, but she does it. In FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT, I didn't hit any love scenes until half-way through the book and there were only a few versus most of her other books. I was quite happy about that. I would say this is one of her cleaner books. For those of you who don't like mature content, now you're aware.

Content: Detailed love scenes, innuendo, some violence, and swearing.
