Summary

Irresistible intrigue, captivating suspense, a swoony friends-to-rivals-to-lovers romance, and heartbreaking betrayal drive this thrilling debut novel that is perfect for fans of The Inheritance Games and Knives Out.

Lily Rosewood has lived with her grandmother since her dad’s death a year ago. She and Gram have always been close—Gram’s role as chair of their family’s luxury coat business has inspired Lily’s love of fashion, and Lily hopes to follow in Gram’s footsteps one day.

Then Gram dies suddenly, and Lily’s world is upended. Gram’s quarter of a billion dollar fortune is missing, and Lily has been banned from the manor she and Gram shared.

But Gram has always loved games, and even in death, she still has a few tricks up her couture sleeve. When Lily and three other seemingly random teens get letters from Gram sending them on a treasure hunt around Rosetown, they hope the fortune will be the reward. But they’re not the only ones hunting for Gram’s treasure, and soon the hunt becomes more dangerous than they ever could have imagined.

A fabulously fun take on a classic... The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch by Melinda Taub (Review) #booktwitter #newbooks #thescandalousconfessionsoflydiabennetwitch #melindataub #historicalfantasy #austenesquefiction @MelindaTaub @GrandCentralPub @Austenprose

Welcome! I'm a huge Pride and Prejudice fan so this one
was definitely my kind of book. Read my full review below...

The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch
By Melinda Taub
Historical Fantasy, Austenesque Fiction
Hardcover, Audiobook & eBook, 400 Pages
October 3, 2023 by Grand Central Publishing

Summary

A "wildly inventive and utterly addictive" (Julia Quinn) witchy reimagining of Pride and Prejudice, told from the perspective of the troublesome and—according to her—much-maligned youngest Bennet sister, Lydia.

In this exuberant retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet puts pen to paper to relate the real events and aftermath of the classic story. Some facts are well known: Mrs. Bennet suffers from her nerves, Mr. Bennet suffers from Mrs. Bennet, and all five daughters suffer from an estate that is entailed only to male heirs. But Lydia also suffers from entirely different concerns: her best-loved sister Kitty is really a barn cat; Wickham is every bit as wicked as the world believes him to be, but what else would one expect from a demon? And if Mr. Darcy is uptight about etiquette, that’s nothing compared to his feelings about magic. Most of all, Lydia has yet to learn that for a witch, promises have power . . .

Full of enchantment, intrigue, and boundless magic, The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch, has all the irreverent wit, strength, and romance of Pride and Prejudice—while offering a highly unexpected redemption for the wildest Bennet sister.

Praise for the Book

· “Funny and fierce as Lydia Bennet herself, this book mixes witchcraft lore with Austen’s story to make its own unique magic. I’ll never look at Kitty the same way again…” ―Claudia Gray, author of The Murder of Mr. Wickham, a Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney Mystery

· “Taub’s wit and creativity shines through. . . A delight for both Austen lovers and fans of magical adventure stories.” ―Kirkus Reviews

· “Wildly inventive and utterly addictive. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm now 100% Team Lydia.” ―Julia Quinn

My Review

THE SCANDALOUS CONFESSIONS OF LYDIA BENNET, WITCH is partially Austen's Pride and Prejudice (in the loosest of terms) and part fantasy novel all from Lydia's point of view. Those who are fans of the classic and like creative stories with a magical aspect will find much to love in this book. Readers will find perfectly imperfect characters, both hidden and clear villains, an intriguing plot, and a mostly epistolary story. A very entertaining main character driving the narrative as well as the addition of magic makes for a fabulously fun take on a classic!

I have read the original classic many, many times, as well as many retellings. I've never once loved Lydia Bennet. However, the author had me cheering her on from very early in the story. There is something about the way Lydia unabashedly speaks of the situation and her choices in this retelling that makes you empathize with her as a reader. The author did a marvelous job in taking cues from the original story and fitting in her own flawlessly. They literally could be read simultaneously and you could believe both stories with their very different points of view. This version also gives Wickham a different impression. He is the same, but not, as you can see some of his perspective for his choices and actions. The other characters fit in well as they support Lydia. I enjoyed getting different sides of some characters that aren't present in the original. I also enjoyed the way the plot flowed and the subtle notes of romance that don't fully form until the very end.

The magical aspect of this story is full of fun as well as a touch of danger. There is a bit of folklore worked in, but not enough that it overtakes the story or main players. I liked the whole concept of Lydia being a witch and there being other witches. It leant a feel of mystery, tension and liveliness to this story. I also liked how spells were described like threads that are being woven. It makes for lovely imagery and a logical description of how the magic works. I thought the idea of a familiar to be creative and carried out brilliantly as well. I love stories with magic in them so this combination definitely worked for me.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed this story from beginning to end! I would definitely like to see more written in the same vein from this author and I hope she has some in the works. This one is highly recommended for fans of the classic who also enjoy a touch of fantasy and another side to the story. Please note that you don't have to be a fan of Pride and Prejudice or know that story to enjoy this one.

Summary

Following the death of her mother, Corinna Ormesby has lived a quiet life in the countryside with her cantankerous Cousin Agnes. Her father's identity has been a tantalizing mystery, but now at nineteen Corinna knows that finding him may be her only way to avoid marriage to the odious Mr. Beech.

Deciding to head to London, Corinna dons a male disguise. Travelling alone as a young woman risks scandal and danger, but when, masquerading as a youth, she is befriended by three dashing blades, handsome and capable Alick Wolfe, dandy Ferdinand Shilton and the incorrigible Lord Purfoy, Corinna now has access to the male-only world of Regency England. And when she meets Alick's turbulent brother Darius, a betrayal of trust leads to deadly combat which only one of the brothers may survive.

From gambling in gentleman’s clubs to meeting the courtesans of Covent Garden, Corinna’s country naivety soon falls away. But when she finds her father at last, learns the truth about her parentage and discovers her fortunes transformed, she must quickly decide how to reveal her true identity, while hoping that one young man in particular can see her for the beauty and Lady she really is.

My Review

AN UNSUITABLE HEIRESS starts off with a damsel in distress who goes under disguise as a boy to find her father and future. It's full of slang and references interred from the three young bucks who join the story. The characters are very flawed but generally likable. The story itself is a fun romp of misconceptions, frivolity, friendship, a bit of danger, fortune and romance. An overall fun read!

The characters were a very fun mix of personalities in this story. You have the heroine who is bold but also a bit brash and naïve. You have the three young bucks who are very worldly and wasteful in their time being spent on gaming, girls and laziness, but who are all proper gentlemen and have good hearts. Then there is the rascal and light villain of the story who is brooding and not overall moral or gentlemanly, and his mistress who is sweet but also clearly has no issues doing what she's doing. Then there is the flamboyant French miss, as well as a long lost father who is steady, stoic, honorable and kind. There's the gentleman farm boy and childhood friend of the heroine. Finally you have the dogs, particularly a little poodle who was an absolute joy. All these characters together made for a story full of humorous contradictions and adventure.

The story moves at a good clip. There are places where the characters are passing their days, but usually there was some sort of excitement in the comings and goings or in who was doing what. There were excursions, adventure and mishaps that provided plenty of entertainment, with a touch of suspense and danger towards the end that brought a needed climax. The romance is very slow build and kind of surprises the characters. I enjoyed that it grew throughout the story to a very sweet ending.

This  isn't one of those sweet Regency romances that you want to read if you prefer your books clean and wholesome. Although, the story and characters are generally clean, there are just enough references, suggestions and innuendo to push it over the line. There were things that I didn't find necessary and images I didn't need in my head that could have been more veiled and still carried the message the author intended. Some of those references kind of shocked me because I wasn't expecting them. I didn't enjoy this aspect of the story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall fun romantic romp set in Regency England. There is a lot of potential here for further stories full of adventure and romance and I'm curious what this author will write next.

Content: Some nondetailed sexual references, references to nudity, innuendo and light swearing.

Summary

He has known nothing but darkness for years. Now it’s time to let it consume him.

After witnessing the brutal death of his brother at the hands of the Steward Knights, Mason Grey turns to vengeance. Using his Gifts to read and control the minds of others, he climbs the ranks of the Dark Army, determined to earn the coveted Shadowstone-a powerful tool against the light-wielding Stewards. But when he is wounded in battle, he finds himself recovering in the home of a chatty peasant girl...without the use of his Gifts. Even worse, the girl mistakes him for one of the Stewards he despises.

Seria Gayle longs to be seen as more than the town washerwoman. When she finds an injured Steward in the woods, she welcomes the chance to use her healing skills and hopes it will earn her some respect. But as she nurses the sullen stranger back to health, she discovers he is nothing like the knights she has long admired.

When Mason's true identity is revealed, Seria is devastated and humiliated. But she is offered a chance at redemption by the very prince that Mason hates. Now Mason struggles between two choices: accept the Shadowstone to avenge his brother or pursue this newfound light in the form of a peasant girl. With time running out and war looming, will Mason and Seria defy their own convictions for a chance at love or stand against one another like they've sworn to do?

Excerpt

He’s scared. The realization made her heart ache. She had heard of men struggling with the trauma a battle left within. Not all scars were visible. Mason was helpless, tethered to a bed by his injuries, without his unit or his sword. Even his sleep seemed troubled at times. She had experienced Rackson from afar, and it had still shaken her. No wonder he was so ill-at-ease.

But there was more to his story than he was telling.

She hesitated, still trying to form the right words. “Your secret is safe with me. I’d hate for you to survive that fight and then get in trouble over it. Especially when you were trying to do the right thing.” She gave him what she hoped was a reassuring smile.

Mason stared at her, his stoic expression frozen in hard lines.

She finished stuffing the clean clothes in the bag. “While you’re here, you might as well take advantage of the time to rest and heal.”

As she moved about in her tiny kitchen area, she sensed him watching her every move. And not because he found her captivating, what with her ratty attire and tousled hair. Not for a man of his caliber, anyway.

Nay, there was something more, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. He kept a thick wall up, determined to stay behind it. But why? What caused him to pull so far within himself?

What was he hiding behind that mask?

Welcome to the Cover Reveal for
Every Time We Say Goodbye: A Novel
By Natalie Jenner
Coming May 14, 2024...

Historical Fiction
Hardcover, Audiobook & eBook, 336 Pages

Summary

The bestselling author of The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls returns with a brilliant novel of love and art, of grief and memory, of confronting the past and facing the future.

In 1955, Vivien Lowry is at a crossroads in life. Her latest play, the only female-authored play on the London stage that season, has opened in the West End to rapturous applause from the audience. The reviewers, however, are not as impressed as the playgoers and their savage notices not only shut down the play but ruin Vivien's last chance for theatrical success. With her future in London not looking bright, at the suggestion of her friend, Peggy Guggenheim, Vivien takes a job as a script doctor on a major film shooting in Rome’s Cinecittà Studios. There she finds a vibrant moviemaking scene filled with rising stars, acclaimed directors, and famous actors in a country that is torn between its past and its potentially bright future, between the liberation of the post-war cinema and the restrictions of the Catholic Church that permeate the very soul of Italy.

As Vivien tries to forge a new future for herself, she also searches for the long-buried truth of the recent World War and the fate of her deceased fiancé lost in battle. Every Time We Say Goodbye is a bold and moving exploration of trauma and tragedy, hope and renewal, filled with dazzling characters both real and imaginary, from the incomparable author who charmed the world with her novels The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls.

(Every Time We Say Goodbye is linked to The Jane Austen Society, & Bloomsbury Girls by characters, but is a stand-alone novel.)

Advance Praise

· “I’m in awe of Natalie Jenner’s new novel, which surprised me at every turn. At times it reads like the juiciest historical tell all, boasting cameos by enduring household names like Sophia Loren and Gina Lollabrigida, and featuring a party where Ava Gardner dances on the table. But most importantly, this is a story about damaged people who are still blinking into the light after the nightmare of the Second World War. This beautiful book balances and explores the most heroic aspects of humanity, and by extension the most evil. Every Time We Say Good Bye is a heartbreaking, engrossing, and thoroughly dazzling work of art that would make the filmmakers at the center of its story proud.” —Nina de Gramont, New York Times and #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of The Christie Affair

· “Every Time We Say Goodbye welcomes back beloved characters from Jenner’s previous novels along with a new fascinating cast in Italy for the production of post-war films. Well-researched and written in a perfect blend of harrowing and heartwarming, this is another fabulous Natalie Jenner novel that historical fiction fans will adore!” —Madeline Martin, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Bookshop in London and The Librarian Spy

· “In her latest novel, Every Time We Say Goodbye, Natalie Jenner deftly weaves in elegant prose, the lives of the incredibly unique characters working to create a controversial war film at the Cinecitta in Italy, and the effects they have on each other and society. An emotionally poignant tale, that explores the human condition before, during and after war, and how those experiences change some while others remain unapologetically stuck. Ultimately, readers will find themselves swept along on a vivid journey through 1950s Italy, wading through the pains of the characters’ pasts and the sacrifices they made, in order to find a way to their hopeful future. Every once in a while, a story comes along that really grips you and inspires you to contemplate the choices we’re all given, and Jenner has done that here. An absolute page-turner, I couldn’t put this captivating book down.” —Eliza Knight, USA Today bestselling author of The Mayfair Bookshop and Starring Adele Astaire

Message from the Author

Hello Dear Readers,

Every Time We Say Goodbye was the hardest book I will ever write, and the most rewarding.

It all started when I learned about the world-famous Cinecittà movie studio in Rome being used as a war refugee camp in the 1940s. People who had been stripped of everything—homes, possessions, even their most basic humanity—suddenly found themselves confined to life inside a “dream factory.” I decided to set my third novel during a very specific, very cool time in history—la dolce vita of mid 1950s Rome—while exploring the incredibly complex and haunting legacy of that city under German occupation during the Second World War.

I also wanted to know why Vivien Lowry, a character from my book Bloomsbury Girls, had been so angry all the time! I wondered if a woman could make the biggest mistake of her life and move past the regret in a way that benefitted her and the world around her. I never intended to write a dual timeline. I had been working on Every Time We Say Goodbye for nearly a year when the voice of a young female Italian resistance fighter codenamed la scolaretta—the schoolgirl assassin—suddenly showed up on the page one day. Having witnessed the bravery and sacrifice of so many to keep us safe during our world’s most recent challenge, I wanted to pay tribute to them. How fortunate am I, through the intimate and emotional power of historical fiction, to have the opportunity to do so.

I packed everything I could into this book: love and conflict, faith and religion, censorship and resistance, art and moviemaking, fashion and food, and cameos by favorite actresses such as Sophia Loren and Ava Gardner and characters from both The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls (I, myself am terrible at goodbyes!).

I hope, more than anything, that Every Time We Say Goodbye gives readers the entertainment, inspiration and food for thought that nourished me throughout its writing.

Best wishes, Natalie

My Review

THERE'S A MOUSE IN MY HOUSE is a adorably illustrated children's picture book that will definitely hold the attention of the reader. The text rhymes, making it easier to read as well as quite catchy. The story also has a positive message about someone invading your space that is annoying and frustrating but in the end can turn out to be good. The illustrations and humor in the story definitely are a winning combination.

My only complaint is that there are some longer, uncommon words that readers will be unfamiliar with. Good for readers who are ready for them, but not for beginner readers who won't be able to pronounce the words or even know what they are (one or two might even be a bit of a challenge for adult readers).

In the end, was it what I wished for? This is a delightful book. Humorous with fantastic illustrations. Fans of prior books by this author and those who like humorous and adorable books will enjoy this one.

Bear and Mouse have finally overcome their differences and are living together in perfect harmony . . . until it’s time to decorate the Christmas tree! Bear wants dazzling lights, while Mouse prefers gigantic ornaments. Did Mouse just put a manatee on the top of the tree? After Bear attempts an upside-down tree, it looks as if Christmas might be ruined for the pair. But maybe, just maybe, Bear and Mouse can reach a compromise in the spirit of the season.

My Review

WE DISAGREE ABOUT THIS TREE is a hilarious story of Christmas-tree-decorating mishaps as a mouse and bear wrestle over decorating their tree. Readers won't be able to resist smiling from the first to the last page through the back and forth hilarity all in holiday fun that ends with the sweetest and truest of messages: it's an ideal Christmas when we're together with loved ones.

There is only one longer, uncommon word that readers might struggle with (children as well as adults). I'm an avid reader so it wasn't an issue and, either way, didn't make this story any less wonderful.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I loved this book! Full of humor and wonderful illustrations made for an absolutely delightful read! Highly recommended to add to bookshelves for the Christmas season!

My Review

REVELATION IS MY FLASHLIGHT is a sweet children's book that uses a flashlight as a way to teach about revelation. The illustrations are wonderful. They add to the story, are eye-catching and also use colors that are bright and pleasing. The text rhymes, isn't too lengthy on each page, is easy to read, and is relatable to what the girl is doing in the illustrations and what the book is teaching. There are also some other examples and things the reader is encouraged to do to help their flashlight grow and how to listen for revelation. An overall adorable book to help teach kids about revelation in a very relatable way.

These were only the beginning of Fawn Malero’s problems, but they coincided with a vampire wedding-of-the-century coming to town and that made them a top priority. And as Logan began to take on more duties as pack Alpha, her loyalties were being tested by everyone. Could she run part of the city and part of the pack?

Then the burglaries started... of human homes, threatening exposure!

Being pulled in so many directions, Fawn feared she was failing her father and the supernaturals of Seattle leaving them open for challengers to their authority. Will Fawn's ability to enlist the help of other supernaturals be enough? Or will they finally see that she doesn't have what it takes to keep Seattle safe and its supernaturals hidden?

Excerpt

“----, I need to get a dress for Saturday,” I said as thoughts of the wedding crashed into me. The wedding was quickly approaching, and I was running out of time to find a dress. I was also running out of time to solve the plagues of rabbits and weather anomalies. I looked outside at the bright sun, it was warm today, too warm. “Is it warmer than yesterday?”

“Probably,” Jasmine said around her spoon of peanut butter. She’d been eating buckets of the stuff lately. She’d probably be showing in the next couple of weeks, and she was going to be the cutest pregnant lady, I was certain.

“News says the heat is setting new records the last couple days,” Evie said. She was always good for a news report since she loved to watch the handsome Werewolf anchor.

Jasmine made kissy noises at Chester who was tweeting for food. He wanted her peanut butter. He swooped to her shoulder then dove for the jar. She was quick enough to dodge, then put a bit on the counter for him and sprinkled some birdseed on top. Chester hadn’t cared for her at first, but they’d become friends lately, mostly because peanut butter was his favorite treat.

“The heat is coming in like a normal weather front, it’s not centralized to the Space Needle or anywhere else. It can’t be the Warlock’s doing.” I was thinking out loud, but Tony had come in for a refill on Betina’s tea and stopped, looking thoughtful.

“But he said he was trying to fix something,” Tony said.

“What if he’s trying to fix whatever is happening with the heat? Everything he’s done has been cold, he’s fighting the heat wave,” I gasped, connecting dots in my mind.

“Fixing it,” Tony pointed out. “That means it isn’t natural and someone ------ up somewhere, still could have been him.”

“Maybe we’re approaching this all wrong. If he’s trying to fix things, he isn’t the enemy, we don’t need to catch him and stop him. We need to find him and maybe help him.” I shrugged. “Then turn him in for ------ it up in the first place if that’s what happened.” I couldn’t ignore the mess of all this and if he’d done something he’d need to take responsibility and punishment. But one thing at a time.

“How do you find a Warlock that doesn’t want to be found?” Tony asked.

Praise for the Author

A Life With Beasts (The Fawn Malero Mysteries Book 1) “A Life with Beasts is a story of intrigue and attraction that is especially recommended for mystery readers who enjoy more than a light dose of paranormal encounters and a touch of romance.”-D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

“a fun adventure/mystery. Courtney Davis brings a fresh perspective to the supernatural creatures we are all familiar with without sacrificing the original ideas associated with them. She creates an exciting world of werewolves, vampires, witches/warlocks, magicians, trolls, and many others. The book is easy to read and fast-paced. It’s a great read for the summer holidays or when you want a light, fun read. Can’t wait for the sequel! Also, there is a healthy dose of romance, which can tend to be a bit much for those who don’t read romance (like me). However, Davis has done a great job of making the romance central to the plot, so I found it quite enjoyable.”- Writa Bhattacharjee, GoodReads

“This was a fast read and I really enjoyed it. It gave me some high school Twilight memories but brought more supernatural beings into play. There were several mysteries and problems being solved but they didn't feel. I found the characters likeable and funny.”-Sara, GoodReads Supernatural P.I. (The Fawn Malero Mysteries Book 2)

“a must read for all paranormal fantasy fans. From werewolves to vampires, to elves and witches this book has it all. My curiosity grew with each page. The plot has a lot of twists and turns. Magic, mayhem, romance issues, and so much more are included. Courtney Davis writes well. Her characters leap off the pages. There was never a dull moment. I love that I could read this and dive right into this magical world. It is the second book in the series. Courtney Davis and her mystery series are now added to my favorites.”-Urban Book Reviews

"a fantastic paranormal mystery/romance with a compelling and fun protagonist, and brilliant world building. Davis' writing is impeccable, and I enjoyed the way that she balanced the mystery, romance and comedy aspects of the novel. I also loved the way it ended! This is what all paranormal mysteries should be!”-Bee, Book Pleasures.com

“This was a great read and one that I cannot stop thinking about! This is a madcap adventure that you are bound to have fun reading! Five stars for Fawn Malero!”-Nora, Storeybook Reviews

Summary

A young widow. A gentle stable master. A secret that could change everything. Will Nora dare risk her heart?

The London Countryside, 1820

Eleanora Coventry comes from a life of title and privilege, but even that isn’t enough to prevent her from being wed at sixteen to a controlling and dismissive husband. So when she finds herself a widow at only twenty-seven, the idea of choosing her own path forward both thrills and terrifies her. She knows how to be a daughter and a wife and mother, but she has no idea how to be Eleanora.

She moves her son and daughter to her late husband’s country estate, where she meets Ridley, the young stable master. He is ruggedly handsome, but also kind, and Eleanora finds herself drawn to him. There is only one problem: Eleanora has a title, and Ridley does not.

Ridley Ellis has a way with horses. Even the most spirited stallions trust his soft voice and gentle touch. He has the same effect on people, and when he first lays eyes on Eleanora, he is smitten by her beauty. But he quickly discovers it will take more than soft words to gain her trust―Lord Coventry had been cruel to people and animals alike. But the closer he gets to Eleanora, the more he is willing to share his heart, and more importantly, his secret.

In a world where title and privilege mean everything, will Eleanora and Ridley risk it all to find happiness? Or will the shadows of their pasts destroy everything they hope to build together?

My Review

THE DREAD PENNY SOCIETY is a beautiful collection of delightful short stories written as penny novels from Eden's Dread Penny Society series. Each short story is delightful in different ways. Some have romance, others paranormal or magical realism moments. Some have mysteries and others quests. All with a lovely Gothic feel. There is something for everyone in this collection that is wonderfully wrapped up in an embellished cloth hardcover.

These penny short stories were one of my favorite parts of this series. For one thing, it's such a creative and fun aspect of this series and something I've never seen carried out so well. The stories themselves are written well and easily grabbed and kept my attention. I love how varied the stories are. I also loved that they're short because that made it easy to read with my kids. I loved sharing them with them. This collection will get read over and over and it looks lovely on my bookshelf as well.

In the end, was it what I wished for? If you're a fan of the Dread Penny Society series or well-written, fun short stories this is definitely a collection to have and enjoy opening. Plus it is a lovely book that only adds to anyone's bookshelf. Highly recommended!
