A summer read set on the east coast... Sometime in Summer by Katrina Leno (Review) #yabooks #yalit #newbooks

Welcome to my tour stop! Check out my review below...

Sometime in Summer
By Katrina Leno
YA Contemporary
Paperback & ebook, 416 Pages
June 28, 2022 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers/Poppy

Summary

From critically acclaimed author Katrina Leno comes a tender love letter to books and summertime, with a touch of magic.

Anna Lucia Bell believes in luck: bad luck. Bad luck made her best friend stop talking to her. Bad luck caused her parents’ divorce. Bad luck is forcing her mother, Miriam, to sell the family’s beloved bookstore. And it is definitely bad luck that Anna seems to be the only person in the world Miriam is unable to recommend a life-changing book.

When Anna finds out that she and her mom are spending two months in a New England seaside town called Rockport, she expects a summer plagued with bad luck too. But Rockport has surprises in store for Anna, including a comet making its first appearance in over twenty years and two new—but familiar—friends.

In what will prove to be the most important summer of her life so far, Anna learns about love, herself, and the magic that an ordinary summer can bring.

My Review

SOMETIME IN SUMMER is about a girl who has her whole world shift as she hits puberty, her parents separate, the bookstore her family has run her whole life is near closing, and then travels to the opposite side of the country for two months during the summer. Readers will enjoy the coastal town and setting, particularly as a beach read. Those who have struggled with questioning if some things are worth experiencing if they don't last (like love) might find a few pieces of wisdom in the heroine's story.

I think what I liked most about this story was the family dynamic of two parents who desperately love their daughter and make their separation as amicable as possible, and the involvement of books. There are several books and lines from books weaved throughout the story as Anna practically grew up in her parents' bookstore, her mom loves books and Anna progresses slowly through her summer reading. I also thought the whole concept and twist in the story was interesting. The author did a good job in making that plausible in a way and tying everything together. I also enjoyed the coastal town with a slower pace and how Anna isn't stuck to her phone, but instead makes friends and spends time with her parents. Makes me wish for some beach time with my family.

I think I felt like this book could have been much shorter. I literally had to force myself to keep reading and it would have possibly been a book I didn't finish if not that it was for review. I didn't love the main character, although I also thought a lot of readers would relate to her. It's a younger young adult read with not much really going on the first half of the book. The second half was more exciting with an interesting twist, but still not completely engaging. Plus it's kind of sad. Then there was quite a bit of leading where the reader is told what they should get from the story as the main character does her own self evaluation. I really don't like it when books tell me what to think. I could see what the author was trying to do, but the best writers can share wisdom without literally writing it out. I think also because I felt the book dragged and I didn't completely relate to the character, this aspect didn't work for me, but it may for others.

In the end, was it what I wished for? An overall sweet read with an interesting twist as a girl finds herself over the summer.

Content: Some swearing and expletives.

To Kiss a Wallflower
(Timeless Regency Collection #19)
By Jen Geigle Johnson, Heather B. Moore, & Anneka R. Walker
Adult Historical Romance, Regency, Inspirational
Paperback, Audiobook & eBook, 305 Pages
June 21, 2022 by Mirror Press

Summary

To Kiss a Wallflower is the nineteenth book in the Timeless Regency Collection, a bestselling anthology series from Mirror Press. The book features three novellas from acclaimed historical romance authors whose stories reveal that eventually, all wallflowers will have their chance at love . . . This is where it begins.

“The Wallflower’s Dance,” by Jen Geigle Johnson

Lottie Hughes likes people, as long as they aren't too close. Does it bother her that no one asks her to dance? Yes, but she's not sure how to drum up dance partners when she has almost no dowry, no title, and freezes up when anyone tries to talk to her. When she suddenly inherits a huge amount and is the new center of attention all over London, her secret dreams might come true but also her worst nightmares. Suddenly everyone wants to talk to her. Men ask her to dance. And she is inundated with interested suitors. She fights to stay close to the few friends she knows are true. One man saw her before her life changed forever. But does she want to accept his help when he, too, might be insincere?

“Letters to a Wallflower,” by Heather B. Moore

Ellen might be beautiful and considered a diamond of the first water by Society, but she is so very tired of the pressure to marry a titled gentleman so that her beauty won’t go to waste. When her cousin Dinah dares Ellen to attend a ball with no frills and to stand with the wallflowers, Ellen takes on the dare. What’s in the wager for her? The prize cuttings of her aunt’s extraordinary roses. But what Ellen isn’t expecting is Lord Ravenshire to engage her in the most interesting conversation. When she confesses to him of her opposition in marrying for a title, he confesses his distaste of the London scene. They strike a bargain together, one which will either push them apart or lead to a future sweeter than either of them could have imagined.

“To Marry a Wallflower,” by Anneka R. Walker

Charlotte Winters is destined to spinsterhood until she turns down an unwanted proposal and everything changes. With gossip rampant, her father attempts to salvage her reputation by betrothing her to another. Soon she is sent off to her aunt’s to meet Lord Templeton, her intended. Anxiety-ridden, Charlotte begs her aunt to let her observe Lord Templeton from afar before their introduction. She never planned to pretend to be her fictional cousin to learn more about him, or to fall in love with Lord Templeton’s friend in the process. Lord Templeton dreads returning to the empty halls of Newcliff Manor. When his father’s old friend, Mr. Winters reaches out for assistance, Lord Templeton finds himself returning home engaged to a woman he has never met. Desperate to learn more about Miss Winters, he befriends her cousin. He wouldn’t have spoken to her, or lied about his identity, if he’d known the quiet woman would sneak into his heart.

My Review

TO KISS A WALLFLOWER is a collection of three short stories involving heroines who are all wallflowers, or at least posing as such, and the men who fall in love with them. The characters are likable and the stories include some humor and sweet romance. An overall delightful collection.

THE WALLFLOWER'S DANCE by Jen Geigle Johnson is a story about a woman who is witty, smart, kind and beautiful but who freezes up in company. She has a titled gentleman as a best friend who she has always been able to talk to and who she doesn't want to lose. When her circumstances change, so does her relationship with him. What ensues is a bit of a mess as she tries to figure out who she should marry and her friend tries to figure out his own heart. There was some rough dialogue and several things that were unrealistic, but I liked the characters and found the story to be enjoyable.

LETTERS TO A WALLFLOWER by Heather B. Moore was my favorite story from this collection. In this story the heroine poses as a wallflower the night the hero comes to a London ball in search of a wife, per his mother's demands. They end up coming to an agreement that suites them both but find things change unexpectedly. I loved both of these characters and the chemistry between them that literally leapt off the page. I also enjoyed the way the author allowed meaningful looks between the main characters but also between some of the family members. It was a well-written story and a delight to read!

TO MARRY A WALLFLOWER by Anneka R. Walker was a fun story about two individuals who become betrothed without ever meeting each other and then practice a bit of subterfuge to find out information about the other. It's a sweet story with palpable chemistry and great characters who I couldn't help but loving. The ending was especially sweet. Definitely a joy to read!

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable and entertaining collection. A good pick for those looking for that happily-ever-after contentment in short-story form, and for fans of clean historical romance with good chemistry and lovely characters.

Excerpt

Each planned drug buy raked on Charlie’s nerves. The lifestyle wore on him. After a year of setting up his presence in the drug scene and five weeks of full work undercover, he wondered how much more he had in him to continue.

He shoved his hands in his pockets and fiddled with his burner phone. His touchstone. His lifeline to the safe world. No names, only speed dial numbers of his Elite Guardians Agency teammates and Quinn. The women had insisted that he include their numbers. He’d resisted, not wanting to put the members of the agency in danger. But they’d reminded him that’s what a team did. They had each other’s backs. He was honored to be included among the top bodyguards in the nation, even if he was the only male. Not that he had a problem with that. He trusted them more than he trusted the police officers he’d served with on the Atlanta PD. And that said something.

Knowing that God was watching over him and that the team was a phone call away allowed him to maintain his calm demeanor and play the part of the cocky, confident dealer of his alter ego, Rod. He left the phone in his pocket and strolled down the sidewalk like he owned the neighborhood.

“I can do the hit.” A gruff voice drifted on the night air.

Charlie froze and scanned the area, searching for the source of the words.

“Not so fast,” a second man argued. “You can’t mess this up. We have one shot at killing her, and if we miss, they’ll close ranks.”

The hair on the back of Charlie’s neck rose. He ducked behind a row of trash cans next to an apartment building, grimacing at the strong garbage odor, a mixture between fish and rotten eggs. Forcing himself to focus, he strained to hear the conversation, but the men moved out of earshot.

Charlie slipped from his hiding spot and clung to the shadows on the edge of the street, following his targets. His ratty shirt and stained jeans, not to mention his unkempt hair, gave him the ability to blend into the neighborhood, but a hinky feeling of being watched crept in and stayed.

About the Authors

Sami A. Abrams grew up hating to read. It wasn't until her 30s that she found authors who captured her attention. Now, most evenings you can find her engrossed in a romantic suspense novel. In her opinion, a crime plus a little romance is the recipe for a great story. Sami lives in Northern California, but she will always be a Kansas girl at heart. She has a love of sports, family, and travel. However, a cabin at Lake Tahoe writing her next story is definitely at the top of her list. Visit her at http://www.samiaabrams.com.

Lily of the Valley
(The Gents #2)
By Sarah M. Eden
Adult Historical Romance, Georgian
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 256 Pages
April 11, 2022 by Covenant Communications

Summary

Cumberland, 1786

Amateur inventor Kester Barrington prefers the peace and quiet of his estate to the bustle of Society. But when his tightknit group of friends, the Gents, descends on Livingsley Hall for their annual gathering, he stoically joins in their activities. It all seems exhausting—until an unexpected addition to the party catches his eye: his new neighbor, the lovely Violet.

Violet Ridley longs to make friends in this new corner of the country, but her family’s fortune was made through investments rather than inheritance, and Society can be fickle. So when tragedy forces her family to shelter at neighboring Livingsley Hall, Violet is delighted to receive a warm welcome from the Gents. In particular, Violet finds herself inexplicably drawn to Kester. The pair is a study in contrasts: Violet, with her sunny disposition, and Kester, with his prickly facade. Their connection is impossible to deny, but both Kester and Violet harbor heavy constraints. As their association becomes increasingly tangled and confused, their only hope of pursuing a life together is to trust one another with the very truths that could tear them apart.

My Review

LILY OF THE VALLEY is a story about grief, friendship, and being seen. Eden's characters are easy to fall in love with while they navigate falling in love themselves. The story takes place during a house party amidst a group of friends full of comradery and additional houseguests of the family next door who need temporary housing. It makes for a lively group with plenty of laughter but also intimate moments between family members and friends. Another wonderful read in this series!

I absolutely adored the first book in this series and didn't know how Eden would top it off. I didn't have need to worry. Though these characters and story are different and might connect with readers in a different way than the first book, it is equally as superb! This book focuses on another "Gent" namely Kester and the groups' shared grief over losing one of their own to the war. Kester is an introvert but loves being with his group of friends and doesn't want to regret missing any time with them. He's not sure how to balance his needs and those of his friends and is still dealing with his grief. Violet, the young woman who comes with her family from the estate next door after a house fire, starts to form a friendship with Kester and his group of friends as they all stay at Kester's house. The group dynamics along with Violet and her family's were quite entertaining. I also loved the quiet moments between Kester and his friends as well as Violet. There was heartache, friendship and healing that all take place as love blooms.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This story brought all the feels as well as delightful characters and a story that is engaging from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

More from Sarah

Research is one of my favorite aspects of writing. Lily of the Valley offered ample opportunities for researching incredibly interesting topics. One main character is an amateur inventor, which tossed me deep into the realm of innovations of the 1780s and 1790s. The other main character has an interest in engineering and mechanics, allowing me to delve into what was known and understood in these fields at the end of the 18th Century. Amongst the supporting cast are a variety of interests, strengths, and passions, all of which saw me pouring over everything I could find from this era on those topics.

A particularly fun area of research I tossed myself into was parlor games played in late 18th Century England. Among my favorites I learned about:
  • The Three Kingdoms, a game very much like modern-day “Twenty Questions.” The guesser has up to six questions to gain clues about what the others in the group have decided among themselves is the thing the guesser is trying to discover. One twist: the first question is always “To which Kingdom does the item thought of belong? (meaning animal, vegetable, or mineral)
  • Short Answers, a game of wits and creativity. The group sits in a circle and one at a time, ask the person to their right a question which that person has to answer in only one word. However, the word cannot be repeated during that round. Once someone has answered a question “Yes” no one else can answer with that word until the round is over. A round ends when someone cannot think of a one-word answer to the question they have been asked and is, subsequently, eliminated.
  • A centuries-old version of musical chairs
  • A game that involved determining which fabricated crime the various players would pretend to have committed.
  • Plenty of games involving forfeits of kisses or handkerchiefs or other shows of affection that the very staid rules of Society would have otherwise looked down on.

Discovering more about the historical context of this book was intriguing and delightful. I hope readers will enjoy learning more of this bit of the past, lose themselves in romance, enjoy the delightful friendship between the characters, and perhaps even find a few new games to try.

I Can't Wait for... The Italian Ballerina by Kristy Cambron (Can't-Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday) #CWW #WOW

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you're continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well! Find out more here.

Tag me on your CWW posts on Twitter (@wishfulendings) and I'll like and retweet!

I need to apologize for not posting last week. We had some family emergencies and I literally did not get on the computer or even check my email for two weeks. Obviously I need to do better in scheduling ahead.

In case you haven't noticed, I tend to switch between genres a lot. This week I'm sharing about an upcoming Christian historical from a terrific author set during WWII. Check it out...

The Italian Ballerina
By Kristy Cambron
Christian Historical/Contemporary Romance, Split-Time
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 384 Pages
July 12, 2022 by Thomas Nelson

Summary

At the height of the Nazi occupation of Rome, an unlikely band of heroes comes together to save innocent lives in this breathtaking World War II novel based on real historical events.

Rome, 1943. With the fall of Italy’s Fascist government and the Nazi regime occupying the streets of Rome, British ballerina Julia Bradbury is stranded and forced to take refuge at a hospital on Tiber Island. But when she learns of a deadly sickness sweeping through the quarantine wards—a fake disease known only as Syndrome K—she is drawn into one of the greatest cons in history. Alongside hospital staff, friars of the adjoining church, and two Allied medics, Julia risks everything to rescue Jewish Italians from the deadly clutches of the Holocaust. Soon a little girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina arrives at their door, and Julia is determined to reunite the young dancer with her family—if only she would reveal one crucial secret: her name.

Present Day. Delaney Coleman recently lost her grandfather—a beloved small-town doctor and World War II veteran, so she returns home to help her aging parents. When a mysterious Italian woman reaches out claiming to own one of the family’s precious heirlooms, Delaney is compelled to travel to Italy and uncover the truth of her grandfather’s hidden past. With the help of the woman’s skeptical but charming grandson, Delaney learns of a Roman hospital that saved hundreds of Jewish people during the war. Soon, everything Delaney thought she knew about her grandfather comes into question.

Based on true accounts of the invented Syndrome K sickness, The Italian Ballerina journeys from the Allied storming of the beaches at Salerno to the London ballet stage and the war-torn streets of World War II Rome, exploring the sometimes heart-wrenching choices we must make to find faith and forgiveness, and how saving a single life can impact countless others.
