Summary

SOON TO BE A STREAMING ORIGINAL MOVIE!

All she wants for Christmas is a rejection.

Chloe Hollis is done being a people-pleaser. After one too many bad decisions--including a job that asked her to cross a line she couldn't--she's determined to change. Her plan? Collect ten nos before Christmas by asking strangers for the most ridiculous favors she can think of.

It should be easy.

But then? Then she meets James.

Instead of shutting her down, the charming out-of-towner keeps saying yes--to Christmas karaoke, to small-town holiday traditions, to every spontaneous, hilarious, totally chaotic idea she throws his way. And the more he says yes, the harder it becomes for Chloe to stick to her plan . . . or protect her heart.

Because James has a reason for saying yes to everything, too--and it might cost them both more than they bargained for.

As their opposite missions collide in a swirl of festive mishaps, unexpected courage, and undeniable chemistry, Chloe starts to wonder if the biggest risk isn't rejection after all . . . but saying yes to something real.

When children's librarian Martha Aldridge learns about budget cuts that will not only put her out of a job but also shut down the library's children's programs, she's determined to raise the funds needed to save both. Julien King has been groomed to one day run his family's publishing empire, and now he must prove he's ready to take the helm by turning around the company's languishing children's imprint. That wouldn't be a problem, except he doesn't know the first thing about children's literature. So when Martha waltzes into his office, he sees an opportunity and makes her an offer she can't refuse. He'll give her the money she needs for the library in exchange for her help in acquiring a bestselling manuscript that will resurrect the dying imprint. My Review

BOOKMARKED FOR LOVE is a sweet romance with characters who are not the usual generic mold. There are also a lot of book involvement. The heroine is a librarian and a complete book nerd and the hero is the almost-eventually CEO of a publishing house. There's also a author conference. So plenty here for book lovers to geek out over. It helps that the characters are also likable, for the most part, and that this is a delightful story of a woman possibly getting the man she's crushed on for a long time who finally sees her.

I enjoyed the previous books in this series as well as other books by this author. I loved the premise, (who doesn't love books and enjoy having a librarian for the heroine and a dashing publishing house executive who can make all her dreams come true in getting her books published. I also liked that the characters were flawed and that the author didn't tie up everything overly perfectly, making it feel more authentic. The romance was sweet with a bit of chemistry and a fun family upstairs downstairs dynamic.

I did have some issues here and there. Like the plausibility of some of the things that happened and the drastic behavior shift in Julien at some points. Felt a bit juvenile and not consistent with the characters.

In the end, was it what I wished for? this was an overall fun read with a sweet romance and lots of nods to books.

My Review

WHEN THE SILENCE BREAKS was a mix of danger, military suspense, wilderness adventure, inspirational story, and romance. The characters were complex and likable with a slight small-town feel and family. The mystery will pull readers along as well as the danger that hunts this pair from beginning to end. Readers of the Christian romantic suspense may enjoy this one.

I liked the overall premise of this story. There's a long-buried secret or treasure, depending on how you look at it, that some don't want found while other want to find to divulge the truth and other want for their own gains. There are two main characters who are keeping things from each other (one more so than the other) but who are on the same side, and then there are others who are tracking them as they travel through a frozen wilderness terrain. There was a constant underlying sense of danger and suspense that kept the story going. There were also some moments of faith reflection mixed throughout. And then there's the romance that slowly develops from attraction and admiration to something stronger as they face danger together.

I did have a really hard time with a lot of the plot points, choices and reactions of the characters and just how several parts played out. It seemed like the good guys weren't really good or had professional skills for being a Navy SEAL and a CIA operative. I felt like the villains had it much too easy and I would have liked that all more developed to play out on a higher level of skill between the two parties.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall entertaining story and likable characters. I'm curious what the author has in store for the next book in this series.

Content: Some violence (military and natural disaster) but clean.

Summary

From award-winning author Rhonda McKnight comes a new story of faith, history, and the power of legacy that merges the romance of The Bookshop Sisterhood with the rich Lowcountry setting of Mary Alice Monroe.

Alexandra Chambers is a writer who has run out of words. Struggling with writer's block and the pressure to secure a new book deal, she wins a week in a writer-friendly cabin through a drawing held at a Lowcountry literacy center.

What she finds is far more than she expected--a vibrant community brimming with inspiration, a past steeped in history and culture, and a man who both intrigues and unsettles her.

Gabe Scott, a bestselling author and the former writer-in-residence, is everything Alex feels she's not--acclaimed, award-winning, and unshakably confident. When their paths cross at the center, his literary brilliance and dedication to helping struggling Gullah students stir feelings Alex isn't ready to confront. Though undeniably attracted to him, Alex wrestles with the fear that her books pale beside his celebrated work.

When a surprising family connection unearths long-hidden truths about her past, Alex is forced to confront a lie that has shaped her life. Guided by the quiet wisdom of Ms. Kate, an elderly Gullah cleaning woman with losses of her own, Alex finds the strength to forgive truths long withheld, embrace her voice, and write the story only she can tell.

Writer in Residence is a rich and layered choice for book clubs eager to explore themes of identity, family secrets, creative reinvention, and the power of place. McKnight's lush Lowcountry setting and unforgettable cast of characters spark meaningful conversation about Gullah Geechee culture, the stories we inherit, and the courage it takes to tell our own truth. An included discussion guide makes it easy for groups to dig deeper into Alex's journey of rediscovery--and perhaps reflect on the hidden roots in their own lives.

My Review

THE BACHELOR SPY is another adventure and banter-filled story in this series. Likable characters, a bit of suspense and mystery, danger that climaxes towards the end, romance, and some faith-inspired moments make this an enjoyable read. Recommended to fans of the genre and this series.

I have read the first three books of this series so I was familiar with the characters, and this fifth book was my favorite of the series. I was particularly excited to get more of Blake, Freddie's dashing spy cousin, and he did not disappoint. This story starts off magnificently with literally quite a bang. It made me excited to keep reading and dive into this world again.

Grace and Freddie were very loving on a whole other level, which can be a bit much for me at times. Blake's and Evie's romance was a bit more on par for my taste. Plus I couldn't help smiling or out right laughing at Blake's quips. There was plenty of chemistry, some red herrings with the mystery, plenty of spy business and danger, and an interesting plot. The romance was sweet with good chemistry and dialogue. I also love the relationship between Blake, Grace and Freddie, as well as the relationship between Grace, Freddie and Brandon. I liked that the mystery and suspense had a few twists and turns. All the characters had moments of prayer and faith, but nothing pushy. That was woven through the story well.

In the end, was it what I wished for? There was plenty of chemistry, some red herrings with the mystery, plenty of spy business and danger, and an interesting plot. This was a thoroughly enjoyable story!

"A folkloric tour de force." —School Library Journal (starred review)

In the mold of Arabian Nights, this groundbreaking YA anthology—featuring seventeen Muslim women writers—links together fantastical stories that a group of refugees tell one another within a riveting frame story.

On her way across the desert, fleeing the soldiers who have destroyed all she knows, one refugee meets another. And another and another. As they travel together, on a journey in search of safety, they take turns telling one another stories—stories woven in the imagination; tales with echoes of the reality they face now. Tales of young people stolen away by jinn and tales of siblings rescuing one another; tales of lands encroached on by settlers and abandoned by rain; tales of magic found in caves, deserts, mountains, lakes, and, above all, in people, community, and faith. With a frame story written by Nafiza Azad and Intisar Khanani interwoven with stories from fifteen additional authors of various backgrounds, drawing on the mythologies and legends of their cultures, this extraordinary collection will appeal to lovers of fantasy and to those looking for books that center refugees and diverse narratives.

“Then we have another deal.” He extended his arm toward her.

Kelley set her hand in his.

Asher stilled when he wanted to give a gentle tug. Just enough to suggest he wanted her closer. Just a nudge that would allow her to close the distance if she chose to or walk away. Yet, he never flinched. He kept his fingers wrapped around hers, his expression relaxed and his words casual. “Thanks for lending me your organizational skills tonight.”

“Anytime.” Her fingers flexed around his hand.

Now, that was a miscalculation. He had not considered the possibility that she might pull him toward her. And now he could not seem to stop considering it. He held his breath. I dare you, cowgirl.

September 1, 2026 by Love Inspired Trade

Summary

In this witty historical murder mystery set in a San Francisco hotel, an unlikely trio of amateur sleuths must uncover a killer before another guest checks out for good. This first book in the Murder Most Fowl Mysteries is perfect for fans of Only Murders in the Building.

In 1905, the Grand Mallard Marquee is well known for its iconic style, as well as its daily duck parade. For Saul Niffler, a reformed jewel thief, working at the luxurious hotel offers a much-needed second chance. Staying out of trouble and in gainful employment is essential. Which makes seeing a body plummet from a penthouse window extra complicated.

Except…did he see it? There’s no body to be found, and Saul knows he should concentrate on his new duties as “Duck Commandant” rather than meddle. If only Kitty Rossi, a persistent young guest yearning to be a Pinkerton detective, would leave well enough alone. Kitty has already roped in Henry, the elevator man, to investigate suspicious goings-on around the hotel. And against his better judgment, Saul feels compelled to join them.

Between the mystery of Saul’s missing predecessor and a grisly discovery in a drain, all signs point to murder most fowl. And with a cold-blooded killer roaming the Marquee’s lavish corridors, keeping his job may be the least of Saul’s problems…

My Review

What did you love about writing A K-9 Mountain Promise?

A K-9 Mountain Promise is a sweet story about second chances, coming home, breathtaking mountain scenery, a close-knit community, and, of course, dogs. But what I loved most while writing this novel was Charlotte. She is a sweet, innocent six-year-old with a heart full of love—especially for everything pink and sparkly.

Would you tell us more about the main characters, Abby and Noah?

Abby is, first and foremost, a devoted mother. Protecting Charlotte's heart is her highest priority, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness. Carrying deep wounds from her past, Abby must find a place where she feels safe enough not only to forgive but also to open her heart to love again.

Noah is kind, loyal, and dependable. His heart longs for love, family, and a place to truly call home. As a veterinarian, he has a special soft spot for dogs, and his two Vizslas, Briggs and Rosie, are his constant companions. Noah and Abby share a complicated history, and for years, he has wondered why Abby left Hope Rock so suddenly without ever telling him the reason.

What's a piece of advice Abby would give about being a single mom?

Even in the midst of life's hardest seasons, make room for the pink and the sparkle. Treasure the little moments with your child, because those are the memories that last a lifetime.

Why do you think readers love second-chance romances?

Hope. We've all made mistakes and wished we could turn back the clock, even though we know we can't. A second chance represents forgiveness, grace, and the possibility that our best chapter may still be ahead of us.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not reading or writing?

My husband and I live on a small farm, so I love gardening, caring for our three goats, walking our dogs around the property, hosting friends, and simply enjoying the slower pace of country life.

What are you working on next?

I always have one or two stories in the works. I'm looking forward to revisiting Hope Rock in the near future to discover who might need a second chance next in this cozy little Colorado town.

Susan B. Anthony built an unstoppable campaign for women’s voting rights that reshaped American democracy.
Harriet Tubman rescued enslaved families through the Underground Railroad and later commanded Union troops to freedom.

It's been a bit since I've read a book from this author, but she is fabulous at fantasy and it's been a bit since I've read a good one. I also love stand-alone books, so that's also a plus. It's my pick this week...

Monster, Monarch, Maiden
By Rae Carson
Young Adult Fantasy, Romantasy
Audiobook, Hardcover & eBook, 480 Pages
August 25, 2026 by Greenwillow Books

Summary

"Absolutely enthralling." —Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop

"Wildly original." —Michelle Jabès Corpora, New York Times bestselling author of His Face Is the Sun

A sweeping stand-alone fantasy from award-winning and bestselling master of the genre, Rae Carson. After she loses everything, Bria will do whatever it takes to survive—even pledge herself to an enigmatic young man on a perilous quest. Breathtaking adventure and slow-burn romance for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Ava Reid, Elizabeth Lim, and Rebecca Ross.

Bria Angarsold isn’t supposed to be a hero. She’s just a mountain girl with a near useless Gift, living an idyllic life with her sister and her parents, running the family’s thriving inn. But then raiders come, and Bria’s family is destroyed.

One of the last survivors of the raid, Bria doubts she’ll live to see where the captors are taking her. Until the caravan crosses paths with a mysterious traveler and Bria’s luck changes again.

Titus—a moody, secretive young man—has been chosen to complete a perilous quest. One that will make Bria question everything she’s ever believed, from the magic that weaves through their world to the very gods themselves. As the journey unfolds, Bria realizes she has something—someone—new to believe in. She’d follow Titus to the Edge of the World, sworn oath or not, even if neither of them stands a chance at returning from it.

But Bria Angarsold is a survivor. She isn’t useless, and neither is her Gift. And this is her story.

What to expect:

- Opposites Attract: Grumpy/Sunshine: Bria's optimistic and effusive personality is countered by Titus's broodiness.
- Slow Burn Romance: Thrown together by chance, but staying together out of necessity, Bria and Titus’s mutual respect develops into love and longing as their bond deepens.
- Strong Heroine: Bria has an undeniable strength and wit that she relies on for survival.
- Trusty Sidekick: Rae Carson expertly turns the sidekick trope on its head, making the sidekick, not the chosen one, the hero of this story.
- Epic Quest: Bria and Titus traverse icy mountains, dark mines, searing deserts, and lush cities as they journey to the Edge of the World.

July 7, 2026 by Harper Collins US

Summary

How does one kill the unkillable?

Sparrow and her companions have been left with an impossible task: slay the immortal Deathless King, whose magic siphons the very life of the world to sustain himself.

The answer may lie deep in the past, when those who would become Deathless Kings stormed the sanctuary of the goddess of Fate, in an attempt to remove their threads from the Weave and become immortal. They broke off a piece of the goddess’s loom and hurled it to the earth, where it still lies at the center of a dangerous wasteland called the World Scar.

For any chance against the Deathless King, Sparrow and her companions must brave the World Scar and reach the loom, which would grant the power of a goddess. But the journey is fraught with danger, and the powerful Deathless King determined to find them.

And if the loom is reached—what will the power of a goddess do to a mere mortal? Sparrow has no choice but to find out.

This title grabbed my interest while scrolling through upcoming releases. I've read a few historical biographies and found them interesting. I like that most likely I haven't heard of these three women and I'll definitely be learning a lot of something news. It also sounds like a perfect book club read. It's my pick this week...

The inspiring, untold story of three incredible women who spearheaded recreation, conservation and resilience in America’s most beloved landscapes, for readers of Pam Houston and David Grann

Throughout the 20th century Georgie White, Anne LaBastille, and Dolores LaChapelle did more to inspire our love of the great outdoors than just about anyone.

- Georgie devoted her life to the Grand Canyon, kickstarting the river running craze in the 40s and igniting the recreation industry
- Anne, a wilderness guide and bestselling author, protected endangered species and predicted the impacts of climate change from her isolated, off-grid cabin in the Adirondacks.
- And deep powder skier Dolores developed an environmental philosophy that shaped everything from the radical environmental movement of the ‘70s to modern conservation ethics.

Now, for the first time, outdoor journalist and bestselling author of Powder Days Heather Hansman goes deep into multiple rugged American landscapes to bring three fascinating lives to the forefront of the outdoor movement, affirming their rightful place in the larger story of an evolving American wild.

For seven inmates, their luxury weekend prison sentence comes with concierge service—and complimentary homicide.

My Review

PAYBACK is a story of murder and mayhem among inmates who serve their time over the weekend with one exception when a maximum security inmate is also transferred there for the weekend. Things definitely don't go as planned, even for the villains. Murder mystery fans will most enjoy all the twists and turns in this story where no one is quite whom they seem.

Read this if you like:
- Murder mystery
- An interesting set of characters
- Surprising twists
- Lots of humor
- A bit of Hollywood

What I most liked about this story were the unique twists. I thought for sure I had the villain pegged (even though overly obvious) until he's the one that's murdered. Then it was a puzzle as to who the actual murderer was and why. I thought the premise was very unique and the story kept me engaged. The humor was such a good counter to the situation, especially as they try to investigate. I liked both Cami and Russell the most. They're also the most consistently sane and normal of the characters, making them the most relatable as well. The other characters were all a little crazy. I also liked how the author weaved through some facts and views on the prison system. It didn't feel forced but more like something to make readers think.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Overall, this was an entertaining, engaging read. Definitely worth grabbing for some laughs along with a few chills.

Content: Some swearing (including a few f-words), murder and some additional violence (some a bit gruesome but not overly detailed).
Source: I received a complimentary copy through Megan Beatie Communications, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Have you read any thrillers this year that you'd recommend?
