I Can't Wait for... Queen Among the Dead by Lesley Livingston (Can't-Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday) #CWW #WOW #yalit #yabooks #fantasy @LesLivingston

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you're continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well! Find out more here.

This author's Wondrous Strange series is still one of my favorites with Faeries. I've enjoyed her books since then and am excited about her next one that delves into some Irish folklore. It's my pick this week...

Queen Among the Dead
By Lesley Livingston
YA Fantasy, Folk Lore, Fairy Tale
Hardcover & eBook, 416 Pages
January 17, 2023 by Zando Young Readers

Summary

A stunning Celtic YA fantasy adventure set in the ancient kingdom of Eire, inspired by the legend of the first true queen of Ireland, perfect for fans of Shelby Mahurin and Adrienne Young.

In the kingdom of Eire, banshees chill the air, and water-wights lurk in the rivers. But magic is outlawed by the king, and jealously hoarded by his Druid priests.

Neve is the youngest daughter of the king, and Ronan is a Druid's apprentice turned thief, making a living by selling stolen spells. They should be enemies, but their shared hatred of the Druids—and a dark magic that has marked them both—makes them unlikely, if uneasy, allies.

When Eire is threatened by a power struggle, Neve must seize the chance to take her rightful place on her family's throne, with the help of Ronan and the realm's most dangerous outcasts. Their journey takes them to the outskirts of Eire, where magic still runs free . . . and where an outlaw and a warrior princess might carve out a future with spells and swords.

Lesley Livingston vividly reimagines Irish legends and fairytales to craft a YA fantasy adventure that will captivate readers of Brigid Kemmerer and Tricia Levenseller.

September 8, 2022 by Covenant Communications

After a devastating childhood trauma, she has spent her life battling fits of panic that make it impossible to finish her studies. Everything changes, however, when a trip to Spain takes a perilous turn that derails her plans to visit her father for Christmas and immediately plunges her into the dangers of a brutal war.

With single-minded focus, she springs into action to help her fellow travelers. To ensure their continued care, she begins work at a Spanish hospital alongside Dr. Jim Jackson, a man whose only emotion seems to be wariness of his new assistant. Armed with gifts of support from each of her dearest friends, a group that dubs themselves the Blue Orchid Society, Hazel embarks on a journey of hope and healing to battle the demons of her past with the help of the doctor who has captured her heart.

My Review

HEALING HAZEL is a story about an English woman finding what she's made of and her place in the world. She battles panic attacks and wants to become a nurse, but her path has some challenges especially when she finds herself stuck in war torn France. It's also a story about an American doctor with his own fears and challenges who finds himself intrigued by this woman whose appearance makes her look like she should be attending balls in society. It's a story of the beginning of the International Red Cross as they try to establish themselves as a neutral party of aid for all. A genuine lovely story of two individuals with the chance to fall in love set during an historical period of challenge and change.

I have really enjoyed this series so far and have been looking forward to each subsequent book and another lady of The Blue Orchid Society. Hazel's situation is a bit unique as she has a military father stationed outside England, deals with panic attacks and has been attending a school for nurses. She's unsure of her place and herself, but she finds that she has more mettle than she imagined. It was fun to see her grow and develop as the story progressed and the spark that started with a certain doctor as they worked together. Dr. Jackson was very likable and it was fun to have an American in this story since that's not overly common in historical romance set in England or Europe. He was a strong character with his own demons to deal with and was doing his best to push the cause of the Red Cross forward. I also found it highly entertaining as he tried to resist his feelings toward Hazel as the spark grew. I think my only complaints would have to do with a bit of a slow beginning and the story feeling told to me in a few places when the author was trying to weave through historical facts instead of feeling immersed as much as I prefer. There were several other side characters as well as an ongoing war that added plenty to this story, but Hazel and Dr. Jackson were definitely center stage and I enjoyed their journey immensely.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a quick read, full of historical facts, set during a turbulent time with a sweet romance. Definitely recommended to fans of the author and genre!

My Review

THE BRIDGE BETWEEN US is a story about redemption and second-chance romance. The inspirational elements are weaved throughout with plenty of heartfelt moments as these characters try to partner together in helping their son. An entertaining and enjoyable story full of heart!

I really liked these characters. Jesse I loved! He had quite a road to redemption and yet was still a bit of a risk taker with that slight bad boy vibe, but really he was a solidly good guy who could make Maeryn's toes curl and mine along with hers. Maeryn was a very protective mom who had learned to be her son's everything and succeed on her own. She had her moments where I wanted to give her a good talking to, but Jesse had a few of those as well so it all balanced out. Then there was their son who I definitely wanted to shake a few times for so easily falling into the same patterns. It's not what I would call your usual romance. More of a mix of women's fiction and Christian romance because of the themes found in this story. Regardless, it pulled on my emotions and left me feeling sweetly content.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a book full of all the feels, with themes of redemption and second chances, as well as a coming-of-age story. From beginning to end, it pulls on the heart. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for this author.

Summary

If there is one woman Samson Rutherford, Earl of Riverton, can’t abide, it is his meddling sister. He has spent his whole life being a pawn in her plans and tricks, but when one of her schemes leaves him dressed in women’s clothing, he has finally had enough. He cannot beat her at her games, or even say no to her, his only option to save his sanity and pride is to run away--and fortunately, his solicitor knows just the place…

Florence Wallace wasn’t born to be a governess, but with her family’s fall from grace, she has become one. A good one. However, when the chance arises to stay at her uncle’s home so she can care for his horticulture project while he is absent, she jumps at the chance. Leaving her position, she plans to gather her sisters together so they can be a family again--even if it is only for a little while.

But the last thing Florence expected to find upon her arrival was her childhood friend. The quiet retreat is what they both need, but who will get to stay?

My Review

HIS SMALL TOWN DREAM is a sweet story about two New York City career-minded individuals who come to a small town, one who calls it home, to regroup. They end up forming a friendship with the possibility of something more while a group of older characters use their matchmaking group to push things along. Those who enjoy light, clean romance, a small town feel and some quirky characters will enjoy this one.

I liked these characters and thought the matchmakers' club was also a fun addition. Adam was likable from the start. He's a pretty steady, rugged, all around nice guy who's also really smart and successful. He had his own demons to work through and I felt like he didn't necessarily need a specific person to figure things out, but it also forced him to face things and move forward. Carrie was full of creativity, energy and focus. I liked that she slowly opened to the people in this small town, to the town itself and her heart. Adam and Carrie together were a good fit, especially as they so easily bounced thoughts and ideas off of each other. They made a good team. The matchmaker's club was a fun aspect of the story to give some quirkiness and charm. The ending was sweet with a nice lead-in to the next story in the series.

I also had a few misgivings with the story. The couple never even got on a date and I kind of felt that Carrie reacted rather strongly at one point for just being a friend. I also felt the chemistry was a bit lacking and that their relationship needed more time or for them to spend more time together for it to genuinely develop instead of just daily coffee shop meetings for five minutes and a few other places when they worked together.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an easy read with likable characters and sweet romance. I'm looking forward to seeing how the matchmakers' next project goes!

The Perilous Journey of the Not-So-Innocuous Girl
(The Perilous Journey of the Not So Innocuous Girl #1)
By Leigh Statham
YA Steampunk, Historical Fantasy
Paperback & eBook, 286 Pages
September 13, 2022 by Cricket Press, LLC

Summary

This brand new edition of the book contains updated historical facts, an amazing new cover, and extra punk for your steam machines!

Lady Marguerite lives a life most 17th-century French girls can only dream of: money, designer dresses, suitors, and a secure future. Except she can't quite commit to a life of dull luxury and she suspects she may be falling for her best friend, Claude, a common smithy in the family's steam forge. When Claude leaves for New France in search of a better life, Marguerite decides to follow him and test her suspicions of love--only the trip proves to be more harrowing than she anticipated. Love, adventure, and restitution await if she can survive the voyage.

Based on the true story of The Daughters of the King, Louis the XIV's social program to settle the wilds of Canada with women of noble birth, Marguerite's steampunk adventure follows in the footsteps of nearly one thousand brave women and girls who were rewarded handsomely for trekking across the pirate infested Atlantic to create a home in a strange land.

(Affiliate links included.)

My Review

THE PERILOUS JOURNEY OF THE NOT-SO-INNOCUOUS GIRL is full of adventure of the steampunk variety with fun characters and quite a bit of heart. If you like character-driven stories where a character shows quite a bit of development as she faces new experiences and challenges, then this one is for you. The addition of a dashing captain to add a bit of romance and fun contraptions only make for a more enjoyable story.

This is one of those stories where the heroine grows on you. Marguerite is a bit spoiled and takes what she has for granted. She also has a curious mind and an adventurous spirit that her governess tries to squash. Throw in a father who believes her only value is in marrying the most elite and rich of suitors, and you have a situation for disaster. As a reader, I also had some moments where I joined in Marguerite's anger and betrayal at the treatment she endures. The adventure really starts a bit before the half-way point of this story. Then Marguerite's character begins being tempered as she finds what she is used to stripped away and faces challenges that test her strength. There are a few places that tugged on my heart and a few where I was thrilled to cheer Marguerite on. In the end, you can't help but love her choices and the spirit in which she carries them out. I also loved the touch of romance, although I felt it could have used more development (as in actual time between the love interests to get to know each other).

This was a previous read for me from when it was first released. This newer version has some additions, although I couldn't tell what specifically was edited out or added in. I did struggle a bit this second time around with the first part of the story because Marguerite is so snobbish. There were also a few places or scenes that didn't work for me logistically. These would be my only complaints.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a fun read, especially for steampunk fans! The character development and adventure as a whole was very enjoyable.

Content: One mild swear word, otherwise clean.

Children of Ragnarok
(Runestone Saga #1)
By Cinda Williams Chima
YA Fantasy, Mythology
Hardcover, Audiobook & eBook, 560 Pages
November 8, 2022 by Balzer + Bray

Summary

Sweeping adventure, breathtaking twists of fate, and immersive worlds based in Norse mythology are woven into this first volume of the Runestone Saga, from the New York Times bestselling author of the Seven Realms and Shattered Realms series.

Since Ragnarok—the great war between the gods and the forces of chaos—the human realm of the Midlands has become a desperate and dangerous place, bereft of magic.

Sixteen-year-old Eiric Halvorsen is among the luckier ones—his family has remained prosperous. But he stands to lose everything when he’s wrongly convicted by a rigged jury of murdering his modir and stepfadir. Also at risk is Eiric’s half-systir, Liv, who’s under suspicion for her interest in seidr, or magic. Then a powerful jarl steps in: He will pay the blood price if Eiric will lead a mission to the fabled Temple at the Grove—the rich stronghold of the wyrdspinners, the last practitioners of sorcery.

Spellsinger, musician, and runecaster Reginn Eiklund has spent her life performing at alehouses for the benefit of her master, Asger, a fire demon she is desperate to escape. After one performance that amazes even herself, two wyrdspinners in the audience make Reginn an irresistible offer: return with them to the Temple to be trained in seidr, forever free of Asger.

Eiric’s, Liv’s, and Reginn’s journeys converge in New Jotunheim, a paradise fueled by magic and the site of the Temple. They soon realize that a great evil lurks beneath the dazzling surface and that old betrayals and long-held grudges may fuel another cataclysmic war. It will require every gift and weapon at their command to prevent it.

My Review

THE BABY'S CHRISTMAS BLESSING is a sweet romance about old childhood friends who run into each other as adults and end up getting a second chance. There are some wonderful characters and an adorable baby that all add a feel of family and plenty of charm. Set during the Christmas season with some inspiring messages woven throughout.

This story was like cuddling up with a warm blanket. It had charm from the small-town setting, to the characters who all support each other in this community, as well as some Christmas spirit. Steve and Chloe both had some things they had to work through, but it was delightful watching them meet again after so many years and fall in love as adults. The inspirational message was light, but heartfelt. I would have liked a bit more chemistry, but that would be my only complaint. The ending was especially sweet.

In the end, was it what I wished for? The was enjoyable and sweet. A delightful inspirational romance with plenty to charm readers.
