Can we just say #coverlove?!! I love how it kind of fades around the edges and the historical castle at the bottom. Moving on... I'm a huge fan of this author. She is super talented. I've read her historical fiction books that were meticulously researched to her historical romances that all have plenty of depth, great characters, inspiring stories and sweet romances. Her January release is my pick this week...

However, he's desperately trying to save her by finding the holy water that is believed to heal any disease.

When he locates two flasks, Ellen refuses to drink one of them because she believes the holy water killed her sister and father. In an effort to convince her to take it, Harrison ingests the contents first, and when Ellen witnesses the effects, she can no longer deny the power of the substance in the bottles. Dangerous criminals are also seeking the holy water, and Ellen soon learns they will go to any lengths to get the powerful drug--including sending her back into the past to find it for them.

My Review

HEART OF STONE concludes this character's journey in trying to repair his future while somehow escaping danger for him and those he cares about. Full of suspense and action, as well as a touch of inspiration and romance. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy this final installment!

This story, like all the others in this series, picks up right after the last book. Rem has to figure out what to do to fix things while simultaneously adapting to who he is in this timeline. I loved that finally, finally he has a bit of help. There is one important player there to give him some insight and some other characters to give him some help. That aspect made this story not feel as disorienting as the others did at points because Rem feels a bit more stable. There is also a moment where he's in a religious AA group and he finds some grounding in faith. In trusting someone other than himself to help make things right. The inspirational element didn't feel forced or preachy, although it did feel slightly jarring because up to this point in the series there was no religious element except the occasional mention. However, for Rem personally, who has only really trusted himself and also blamed himself, this has a huge affect for him. The danger and suspense are weaved throughout the story with some climatic moments, making for an intense read. These authors do such a fabulous job in keeping readers guessing. I knew who the villain was, but had no clue how it was all going to play out.

This series, for me, has been this mix of crazy, true crime, sci-fi, intense, romantic, fiction. It feels raw and genuine. Of course, I love the storyline because it definitely kept me turning the pages, but more than that, I love these characters! Rembrandt is this tough and smart detective with a million rough edges, and Eve, who can definitely hold her own, softens those edges, grounds him while also adding to his drive. Both of them honestly drive each other in their professions but also in who they are as people and what becomes important. They go around in circles a bit in this series, but I loved seeing things come to a head and then a conclusion in this final book. Not everything is easy or perfect, but it all works out perfectly for this series.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I have really enjoyed this series and this was a great ending. I would love to go back and read all six of these one after the other. It's a crazy, roller-coaster of a ride. I'm looking forward to seeing what this trio of authors do in the future, although I don't know that they could ever top Rembrandt Stone.

Forestborn
(Forestborn, #1)
By Elayne Audrey Becker
Young Adult Fantasy
Hardcover, Paperback & ebook, 368 Pages
August 31, 2021 by Tor Teen

Summary

A young, orphaned shapeshifter in a world that fears magic must risk everything if she hopes to save her only friend in Elayne Audrey Becker's Forestborn, first in a new fantasy series with a timeless feel.

TO BE BORN OF THE FOREST IS A GIFT AND A CURSE.

Rora is a shifter, as magical as all those born in the wilderness―and as feared. She uses her abilities to spy for the king, traveling under different guises and listening for signs of trouble.

When a magical illness surfaces across the kingdom, Rora uncovers a devastating truth: Finley, the young prince and her best friend, has caught it, too. His only hope is stardust, the rarest of magical elements, found deep in the wilderness where Rora grew up―and to which she swore never to return.

But for her only friend, Rora will face her past and brave the dark, magical wood, journeying with her brother and the obstinate, older prince who insists on coming. Together, they must survive sentient forests and creatures unknown, battling an ever-changing landscape while escaping human pursuers who want them dead. With illness gripping the kingdom and war on the horizon, Finley’s is not the only life that hangs in the balance.

Excerpt

Finley’s eyes are glazing over, far too fast, the pupils dilating as if he’s concussed. He shakes his head, holds out a hand, clutches mine when I step close to steady him. “I think—”

“Finley!” I cry, catching him when his knees suddenly give way. I’m dismayed at how easy it is to support his weight, considering he’s only one year younger than me. Or two, or three. It’s all a guess, really. “Fin, talk to me,” I say, my heart flinging itself wildly against my ribcage as I watch his eyes lose focus once more. His hand loosens its grip on mine, and both of us sink to the forest floor.

“Let him go,” I beg, bending over the body gone rigid, the heaving chest, the quivering, waxen skin. Alarm bells are screaming through my head, loud as the clocktower tolling the hour, and with them, the tingling in my core returns. Threads of numbness engulf my limbs. Fur along my back, then feathers all over—my body torn between the urge to hide or to flee, far away from this scene I never saw coming. “Please. Not him, too.”

I ignore the gathering sounds of creaking, groaning wood overhead with a vengeance. Tears are welling in my eyes, but I blink them away and shake my head, refusing to let them fall. Refusing because this day of truth has always been tainted by lies, so what’s one more to add to the tally? In the darkening wood, I set each one before me, all of the lies I reach for when the nightmares, the dirty looks, the hidden scars and endless self-loathing begin to drag me under—that my mother loved me before she left me, that my brother and I are not a curse, that I can be good and selfless and worthy of love in spite of the things I’ve done. I assemble them all, then set one more on the shelf: that my best friend, my only true friend aside from Helos, isn’t dying.

But the trees around me, leaves and branches straining against their holds, limbs pointing to Finley like a circle of swords—the trees all tell a different story.

I've been a fan of this author and romantic suspense for years. She used to write more contemporary romance, but her past couple of series have turned towards more suspense. She also seems to get better and better with each book (The Way of the Brave was the book that seriously had me on the very edge of my seat and had me telling the kids that they weren't allowed to climb any snowy peaks, which actually reminds me that a previous book also had me telling them no fire jumping, lol!). Her upcoming release is the start of a new series and I can't wait! It's my pick this week...

Check out an interview with the author for this YA fantasy... Blood, Fire & Mercy by Christina Davis (Interview & Review) #yalit #yabooks #yafantasy #newbooks

Blood, Fire & Mercy
(Da'ValiaTrilogy #2)
By Christina Davis
YA Fantasy

November 10, 2021

Summary

18-year-old thief Neva Roberts has been living on the run since absconding with the Eye, piece of the greatest weapon ever created. But she’s running from more than a cold-hearted ruler. She has exiled herself to a barren land, trying to forget the pain she caused.

When Trinizhi’s squad of assassins catches up with Neva, her life on the run comes to an abrupt end, and the ultimate betrayal is unveiled. Only one person — Astiand — knew where she was hiding.

With the help of Emiliand and a new Djinn friend, Neva will return to her homeland for the job of a lifetime. If she can overcome dragon wardens, escape a prison island, and double-cross Trinizhi, Neva might just start forgiving herself…

Interview

For those new to the series, what should they know?

Read Born at Dawn first? Haha. I guess they could jump into the trilogy with Blood, Fire & Mercy, but a lot of context would be lost.

Also, I don’t skimp on fantasy terms, so most readers find the glossary at the end to be helpful. It’s important to know it’s there – otherwise, they may not find it until they reach the end.

What was most challenging and most rewarding about writing this second book?

The most challenging thing about writing the second book was reminding myself to stay true to the story and true to the characters. Like, I adore Astiand and Emiliand, and it would have been so fun to give them more “screen time,” but the job Neva takes on is really something she needed to do herself.

The most rewarding thing was coming to know the Dragonslayers gang. Ballard was unexpectedly wise. Rinaldo was so complex – superstitious, yet brave. Tavo is hilarious. Mari is devious. …Together, they formed the perfect found family for Neva and helped her complete her character journey. I love it when things fall into place like that.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

I’d have to say Benjamand, the warrior librarian. I’m more of an introvert like he is, I love books like he does, and I’m happily nerdy.

What aspect of this fantasy world do you love the most?

Hm… I’d have to say the prison island and the pirates. I enjoyed figuring out what a prison island plagued by dragons would be like, and then how the people who were born there would live.

When I grew up in a small town, all I wanted to do was leave as soon as I could, so it just made sense to me that natives would turn to piracy as a vocation.

I also love that what the Order considered to be a life sentence for its problem citizens ended up backfiring generations later, creating an adversary (the pirates) for their merchant ships.

What was a book that made you cry, a book that made you laugh and a book that made you swoon?

The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton tugged at my heartstrings. Not only was his wrongful conviction completely unjust, but there’s a scene where his mother passes away while he’s imprisoned, and he can’t go to her funeral. That one really got me.

Stealing Embers by Julie Hall had me cackling while I was sneakily reading next to my sleeping husband. Without giving anything away, the scene to look out for is Emberly vs. Steel.

A book that made me swoon… Anything by Olivia Wildenstein, but, specifically, The Lost Clan trilogy made me fall in love, which is all I can ask for in a book.

What’s something you enjoy doing when you’re not reading or writing?

I really enjoy hiking. I grew up next to a state park in a small logging town, so spending time in nature is something that nourishes my soul. Now that my daughter is toddling, I take her with me, and it’s even more rewarding to share what I know about the woods with her.

My Review

BLOOD, FIRE & MERCY is another roller-coaster fantasy where there is much at stake and only a few who can be trusted. The storybook world opens up more in this second installment with more magical creatures and another quest for the heroine to undertake. Another entertaining read for fans of YA fantasy and the series.

It took me a bit to remember who everyone was from the first book, but once I did, I was again completely immersed in this story. I still loved Neva, Astiand and Emiliand. There were also new characters who I grew to love from this second book, particularly Mari. Mari's magic was really interesting as well as quite helpful. I really liked learning the ins and outs of the island prison and its dragon wardens. I did miss a bit of the romance from the first book, but the chemistry and friendship were both still strong amongst certain characters, even in the glimpses we get. This author does really well with action sequences, which were an exciting part of this story, as well as character development. I loved the motley crew that ended up forming around Neva. The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I'm anxiously waiting to see how things eventually turn out.

I had few complaints. One was that I felt like we kind of skipped some important pieces or parts, like how the Eye was tethered to Neva. I also felt there needed to be more development and world-building in the desert and as they're travelling, maybe because the stays were short, but I still wanted more. I didn't feel I was transported there as much as I wanted to be to fully experience the story. I also felt like Neva should have been a bit wiser and more skilled at this point in the story. I also wanted to shake her a few times when she basically cripples herself.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I loved the characters and this fantasy world with magic and different types of creatures. There was a lot going on and I can't wait for the conclusion in book three! Plus, did I mention there are dragons? Definitely a recommended series for fantasy fans!

Content: Some innuendo, lewd dialogue, violence (nothing overly descriptive). Would consider this clean.

My Review

THE MOMENTS WITH JESUS ENCOUNTER BIBLE is a book that focuses on the life of Jesus in the four Gospels when he was on the earth. The stories are written in such a way to make children feel like they are there, in person, with colorful illustrations, and questions at the end of each story to help children think about and apply what they just read. A book that Christian families will definitely enjoy having on their shelves.

I thought that each of the short chapters were fairly well written, based on scripture references and stories of Jesus. They're easy to read and understand, especially as they're written as if the reader is there. I loved the illustrations! They were well done, full of color and interest. I also liked the questions at the end of each chapter to help children think more about each story and how it might apply to them.

My only issue with the book is that it felt maybe a bit too light or modernized in parts for my personal taste. I don't think most will have this issue though, and even then, it's a book I would definitely read with my children on a regular basis.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall inspiring and applicable children's book for those seeking to help their children develop a stronger relationship with Jesus. Children are sure to enjoy each chapter and all the illustrations. It's also a good way of providing opportunities for parents and children to talk about Jesus.
