February 11, 2024 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Summary

For fans of Sarah J. Maas and Holly Black, The Forest King's Daughter is an enemies-to-forbidden-lovers romance from the New York Times bestselling author of Frostblood.

Once upon a time, among the bloodred trees of Thirstwood, a young forest princess became friends with a lonely boy from underground. He gifted her an amber ring, a worthless trinket—or so he thought—because no sooner did he slide it onto her finger than the queen of the underground and the forest king declared war.

Years later, Cassia is a crucial force in her father’s army, wielding her ring of light that can blind and disorient hundreds of enemies at a time. Then battle-hardened Zeru abducts her, planning to steal the ring back to fix his costly childhood mistake. Exhausted, terrified, and more than a little mistrusting, Cassia is forced to travel with Zeru to a place they both believed only existed in storybooks, one where their childhood friendship slowly rekindles into something much more. But it's only a matter of time before the war they’ve escaped comes for them, and a hidden threat to forest and underground folk alike grows in the shadows.

From the author of the Frostblood Saga comes the first book in an enchanting, adventure-filled fantasy series about the daughters of the powerful forest king, sure to leave readers breathless and desperate for more.

Will they continue believing the lies they’ve told themselves, or will they remain forever entangled in the threads of what could have been?

A Year of Flowers

November 18, 2024 by Revell

Summary

In this collection of four heartfelt novellas, three former friends have found success in the floral industry, but happiness–and love–remain elusive.

In An Apology in Bloom, wedding florist Jaime Harper is on a meteoric rise, working for an event company led by a successful and way-too-handsome boss. When a letter arrives from her past mentor with an offer too good to pass up, will she stay or head back to her hometown?

In A Bouquet of Dreams, Claire Murphy has always dreamed of owning a flower shop, and when her employers hint at retirement, she believes her moment has arrived. But first she must confront her past–and the man who caused her to flee her hometown years ago.

In A Field of Beauty, Tessa Anderson has found an acre of farmland to start her flower farm and forget the past. She’s grateful for the help of two men–her boyfriend, Tyler, and a quiet soil specialist named Dawson. But as the farm finally starts to bloom, Tessa will discover something that challenges everything she’s built.

In A Future in Blossom, Jaime, Claire, and Tessa return to their hometown, finally ready to face each other and their beloved mentor, flower shop owner Rose Reid. As they unite to pull off an extraordinary wedding, amid the flurry of preparations they just may find their way to forgiveness.

My Review

A YEAR OF FLOWERS is a novella collection with the first three novellas each focusing on one of three friends and the fourth focusing on their reunion. Readers will find themes of hope, faith, second chances, hard work, forgiveness, romance, friendship and love within these pages. Likable characters, a small-town setting and memorable moments make for an enjoyable read for Christian romance readers.

I loved the whole concept of this book! It was so much fun to read different novellas that made up an arching story about three friends: their beginning in a flower shop, a bit of time before they come back home, and then their reunion. I did love some of the characters and their stories more than others, but all of them were unique, well-drawn characters and stories with all the feels.

An Apology in Bloom: This story was about Jaime who was a through and through Southern girl with a lot of talent in flower design. She had a dream to go to New York and she made it happen. She easy to like and cheer on as she comes to a bit of a realization both in falling in love and where she belongs. It's a bit dramatic in a few places and I felt like there was a bit of insta-love, but otherwise enjoyed this one.

A Bouquet of Dreams: Claire is the focus of the second novella. She's unaware of how the need she feels to share what she thinks and coming across as a know-it-all has impacted her situation. She was a bit out of control and over the top in places. I liked her a bit more when she shows some vulnerability. I liked that this was a possible second-chance romance, so no insta-love here. It's an interesting story that added more to the overall arch of these three friends.

A Field of Beauty: This was my favorite character and story. Tessa came across as fairly levelheaded. She wasn't always and made some pretty major mistakes when she was younger, but in the present day of this story, she's matured. She also took a different aspect of flowers than the other two friends. She had a vision that she worked hard to turn into a viable and profitable business. I love the interactions between her and Dawson, how they complimented each other and got to know each other over time. There were some humorous and sweet moments. Loved this one!

A Future in Blossom: I liked following along as the three friends went back and seeing their reunion. They each had their own way in how they worked together and reconciled. I enjoyed seeing each of their romantic relationships: Jaime and Liam, Claire and Chris, and Tessa and Dawson continue to blossom. I also liked that I got to finally find out the whole story and what had happened in the past. There were some humorous, fun, sad, crazy, and swoon-worthy moments in this one.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable read with a fun concept for the premise, a well-executed plot, complex and likable characters, moments of faith, and sweet romance. Definitely recommended to Christian romance fans!

Content: A reference to an affair but tastefully handled. Would consider this clean.

A Year of Flowers: Friendships in Full Bloom

If you’ve ever tended to a garden, you know that flowers and friendships have a lot in common—they both need a bit of love, attention, and sometimes, a good pruning. That’s the heart of my novella collection called A Year of Flowers, stories of three teenage girls who bonded over bouquets and blossomed into best friends under the guidance of Rose, the wise and wonderful flower shop owner.

But life, much like a garden, doesn’t always go according to plan. On one sweltering August day, something dreadful happens in the flower shop, and the girls, who once shared everything, suddenly vanish from each other’s lives.

Seven years later, we find out where each girl, now a young woman, has gone. Their love for flowers is still in full bloom. Jaime’s taken her talent to the big city, working as a floral artist for a high-end event agency in NYC. She’s turning heads with her extravagant designs, but something’s missing—maybe it’s the simple joy she once found in that small-town flower shop.

Claire has run off to Savannah, Georgia, where she’s knee-deep in blooms, working in a flower shop with dreams of running the place one day. She’s got her eye on the prize, but she’s also discovering that you can’t outrun the past, no matter how far you go.

Then there’s Tessa, who’s found solace in the soil of Asheville, NC, where she’s started a flower farm. It’s a peaceful life, but even in the quiet of the mountains, memories of that summer day haunt her like the mist that rolls over the hills.

As each story unfolds, we see that, like flowers, friendships need TLC. They can wilt easily without care and attention. And sometimes, a good pruning is necessary, to help it grow stronger.

In the final novella, the three young women are drawn back to where it all began—the flower shop, and to Rose. It’s time to dig up the past, clear out the weeds, and see if their friendship can bloom again. After all, just because a garden has been neglected doesn’t mean it can’t be revived with a little care and attention.

So, if you’re a fan of flowers, friendships, or happy endings, get a copy of A Year of Flowers. It’s a reminder that with the right care, both flowers and friendships can flourish, no matter how long they’ve been left untended.

The Night on the Darling River

Historical Fiction, Suspense, Romance, Women's Fiction
Paperback & eBook, 424 Pages
December 1, 2024 by HQ Fiction

Summary

Amid the rising flood waters and shearers' strike violence, can one brave woman reclaim her future? From an Australian bestselling author comes a riveting historical adventure about one woman's journey from a life of isolation to one of love and acceptance.

1894, Echuca, Victoria

Tess Hawthorn is a woman on the run from her abusive husband. All she has to do is get on the riverboat Victor and she will be free.

But with tensions at an all-time high between unionist shearers and Scabs, Tess isn't the only person trying to board a boat under the cover of night. When a brawl erupts between the union and non-union men, Tess is mistaken for a fellow Scab and in the chaos pulled aboard the PS Rodney - the same boat heading up the Darling River that her husband was bound for.

The last person Bram Kempster expects to see on board is Tess Hawthorn, the girl he's loved from afar since they were young. But he can't afford to get distracted, not when he's on an urgent trip to Renmark. Tess didn't want him back then and, if her haughty behaviour is anything to go by, she certainly doesn't want him now.

But childhood hurts are the least of their problems. The continent is a tinderbox of violence and bloodshed waiting to ignite, and at home the Murray River is rising fast. Can they overcome their past in time to work together and survive?

My Review

THE NIGHT ON THE DARLING RIVER is about a wife trying to leave her abusive husband on a boat down the river during a strike full of violence. It's a journey that involves a terribly violent night on the river with great impact on this woman's life, those involved and those whose lives it touches. The story follows five characters amid all this chaos, poor choices, and finding their own journeys of self-discovery be it good or bad. Recommended to general historical fiction readers who don't mind more mature content.

This is my first book from this author and my first story set during this time and place. Fraser did an excellent job immediately immersing me in the lives of her characters and the setting. I didn't feel like information was dumped on me or told what I should think. I experienced the story, lived in the late 1800s in Victoria alongside these characters during months of turbulent, violent, destructive times that were also full of forged friendships, romance and both negative and positive surprises for all to weather. Nor were all the characters easily categorized. They were complex and morally gray. There were characters I loved: Tess who pulled on all my heartstrings, steady and dependable Bram whose heart had been given once and stayed true, and Merv who made me laugh so many times. There was Ava and Tad with their rocky beginning as they tried to survive, and Tad's steadfastness. Then there were characters I didn't like: Alby who I don't want to mention at all, Harry who was had his good and bad moments, and Eugenia who had her own choices and role to play. This story had a lot of moving parts and overlapping storylines, and the author made it all work seamlessly. It's a story that will keep readers turning the pages to find out how it all plays out.

There were a few aspects of the story that weren't for me. The strongest were some of the sexual references mostly in reference to one of the characters, Harry. I didn't need any of his visuals in my head, especially as they were all degrading to women. I also have an issue when a book uses a lot of blasphemy, which this one does on top of consistent swearing. Another issue was having Harry as a point of view at all. I tend to not love stories where I don't love the main characters and since in this book the author has several points of view from several characters, you get all their stories regardless if you like them or not. That can work in some cases, but in this case, I would have been okay with the author or editor cutting out some of them, keeping what was pertinent to the story and working those pieces through as needed in order to focus on Tess and Bram. These are my personal preferences, and I know that many others won't have these same issues.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a well-written and compelling story. The historical setting was immersive with a heroine whose situation was heartrending, but also such a good character arc with a feel-good, well-deserved ending. Characters were complex and morally gray. Aspects of it weren't for me, but otherwise general fiction readers will enjoy this one.

Content & Trigger Warnings: Some crude references and language, blasphemy, swearing (including the s and f-word), references to prostitution, marital affairs, and other sexual references (some briefly detailed), some extreme and consistent violence, murder, domestic abuse (some parts very traumatic).

Summary

Romance blossoms when Isla Crawford steps into McQuivey's Costume Shop in London and is swept back in time to 1605, where she and Lord Bancroft attempt to thwart Guy Fawkes's Gunpowder Plot.

One moment, Isla Crawford is inside McQuivey's Costume Shop trying on a Jacobean-style gown for the parliamentary Autumn Ball, and the next, she is standing in an unfamiliar garden, barefoot, coatless, and at the mercy of a fierce storm. Confused, she seeks refuge in a Tudor manor, where she discovers that she has inexplicably traveled back to 1605, mere weeks before the culmination of Guy Fawkes's infamous Gunpowder Plot.

Simon Hartworth, Lord Bancroft, finds his orderly seventeenth-century life disrupted when a mysterious woman appears on his sister's doorstep during a storm. Intrigued by the stranger's quirks and bewildering speech, he feels compelled to protect her and heed her warnings about a fatal plot against Parliament. As Simon is drawn into Isla's dangerous scheme to stop the evildoers, he can't help but also feel drawn to her.

With seemingly no way to get back home, Isla uses her twenty-first-century knowledge of the past to try to thwart Guy Fawkes and his coconspirators without altering the course of history forever. She and Simon must race to unravel the threads of the treasonous plot even as they wonder how their hearts will navigate their deepening connection and the seemingly insurmountable four centuries that separate their lives.

Summary

In 1793, a storm propels Lili forward through time, kindling a love that transcends the ages.

Fleeing the clutches of Robespierre’s revolutionary Tribunal in France, Lili Minet makes a desperate escape on a ship headed to England, but her dangerous flight takes an unexpected turn when a violent storm catapults her off the ship and eighty years into the future, leaving her stranded in the unfamiliar world of 1873 England.

When lighthouse keeper Armitage Pierce rescues a woman from the tumultuous sea, he does not anticipate her silent, cold response to his gallant efforts. Though he is wary of this woman and her odd behaviors, he finds she is just as wary of him. And he can sense that she is not telling him something of great import to her. Only Armitage’s grandfather, a man seasoned by the mysteries of the sea, can seem to penetrate Lili’s defenses to offer her support. But as Lili heals from the physical and emotional wounds of her ordeal and Armitage continues to offer light and safety to her, a tender friendship blossoms between the two.

Yet the shadow of danger looms as the threat that chased Lili from France all those years ago reemerges in her new present. Together Lili and Armitage must navigate the challenges of a love that defies the boundaries of time and the perils that reach across the decades to ensnare Lili. As the storm clouds gather, Lili and Armitage face the ultimate test—whether their bond is strong enough to rewrite the pages of history itself to save them and their love.

My Review

BETTER THAN REVENGE is about a girl who has worked for years to earn a spot on her high school's podcast team only to have her boyfriend, who previously never showed any interest, decide spur of the moment to try out and ends up getting the spot. What follows is a break-up and then revenge plot with plenty of angst, banter, a memorable motley crew of friends, and a fun enemies-to-more romance. Highly recommended to YA contemporary romance readers!

Read this book if you like:
🩷 Enemies-to-lovers stories
🩷 Great characters
🩷 A unique and lovable friend group
🩷 Sweet swoon-worthy romance with lots of fun banter
🩷 Sports
🩷 Payback with a conscience in the end
🩷 Family, especially a sweet grandma in the early stages of Alzeimers
🩷All the feels
🩷 A perfectly tied-up ending

I've been a fan of this author for a long time and this book reminded me why. It was full of the great characters, genuine emotions, teenage sarcasm, banter and swoon-worthy romance that this author does so well! I was smiling and laughing and angry and disappointed and sad and swooning... on repeat. The angst wasn't too strong that I was rolling my eyes all the time or annoyed either, which is a delicate balance as a writer to do. West did it very well. It helps that I tend to love enemies-to-more plots, which this definitely was. She also made the chemistry spark between her characters while creating these sweet moments when Finley or Theo would bring up memories along with moments when Finley and Theo were feeling each other out. Theo was so aware of Finley, but the author weaved through those moments without telling the reader what to think about them. There was plenty of humor as well. Definitely all the feels in this one! I enjoyed this story so much that when I saw I was two-thirds through, I got sad thinking about the story being over soon.

I wouldn't have loved this one so much without loving the characters. I loved the tie-ins with Finley's grandma and the quest to find her art deco surfboard. I adored Finley's group of friends with all their dynamics. I also loved Finley and how everyone interacted. She did have some rough moments, but I completely understood how she felt and how wrong her ex was for what he did and how he acted about it. I also liked how the author made Theo a bit of a risk. Finley thinks she knows all these things about him, and he acts and says certain things at school that can back that all up. It was a bit unknown if Theo was trustworthy or if Jenson would get his act together (I was definitely cheering that Finley believe in herself and not go back to Jenson). I know how I wanted it to end, but the author could have gone a couple of different ways. Thank goodness we agreed on the way it went!

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an entertaining and fun read from beginning to end! I loved the characters, all the different elements, all the feels, the romance, and the way this story made me smile. A must-read for YA romance fans!

Content: One student flipping off another, references to a gay couple (nothing detailed and very sweet). Would definitely consider this one clean.
Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through TBR & Beyond Tours, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Summary

Jane Austen meets Fleabag in Regency London, as a resourceful young woman with a talent for helping ladies of the ton with their most delicate and pressing predicaments finds herself facing a task of royal proportions. Literally.

King George IV is petitioning Parliament for a divorce from his queen on the grounds of her adultery. But rumor has it that the king secretly married Maria Fitzherbert—long before he married the queen. Now Mrs. Fitzherbert has been robbed—and she’s frantically calling on Rosalind for help.

Because what those thieves took is proof that she and King George did really marry. That single piece of paper could destroy Mrs. Fitzherbert and her family—or it could prove the king guilty of bigamy.

Rosalind races to investigate. With her is ex-Bow Street officer, Adam Harkness, with whom Rosalind shares a complex and rapidly intensifying bond. But a case of theft soon turns to murder . . .

Josiah Poole, a disreputable attorney specializing in helping debtors—and who was seen entering Mrs. Fitzherbert’s house—is found brutally murdered. Mrs. Fitzherbert has debts. Could she have staged the theft, and employed Mr. Poole to sell the marriage certificate? Or is the truth even more complicated? Mrs. Fitzherbert’s daughters have secrets of their own. And Poole himself had no shortage of enemies.

With suspicious coincidences mounting, and more danger encroaching, Rosalind and Adam must move quickly to unravel a history-making mystery that might just lead them straight to the palace itself . . .

My Review

THE MATTER OF THE SECRET BRIDE is about a women investigator and her friends as they seek to discretely find a woman's missing document. A controversial document that has the power to influence the political and social structure through England's monarchy. With various suspicious characters and plots, the mystery unfolds and intensifies to its climatic, and somewhat humorous, end. Readers who enjoy both historical romances and cozy mysteries will enjoy following these lovable characters.

This is the first book I've read from this series. It took me a little bit to figure out who everyone was and their roles, but I had that all worked out by the time the investigation was truly on and the mystery started to unfold. I really liked these characters! I felt like they were all well draw with their own personalities and relationships. I also liked that even the characters who had short appearances as well as those secondary characters with a lot more page time felt unique and well suited for the historical period. The relationships all had depth and maturity, even the sweet romance that included some swoon worthy parts. The mystery itself and plot definitely kept me engaged. I was completely invested in finding out what would happen and how everything would turn out. I thought the resolution that Rosalind, the leading heroine, developed was fantastic, entertaining, and a perfectly fitted ending for this story. For those who have read the previous books, there was a nice arc resolution in this book.

There were a few things here and there that needed some tidying up. There were a lot of characters for new readers and hardly any introduction or background recap important to understand this new story. None of this information needs to be long or repeated, but there was a lot more emphasis on repeating information about the cultural and social rules and environment that didn't need to be quite so pointed (readers would easily draw similar, while also their own, concussions). Some of the investigative practices weren't consistent, such as some places being watched but not others, or a delay in some pertinent information versus others. The story felt long, which it was, and did drag or felt stretched out in some spots. There were a few phrases, including a couple of the references at the start of each chapter, that were repeated.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed stepping into this investigation in historical England. The characters were delightful with a plot that was entertaining and intriguing. Definitely one to pick up if you enjoy generally sweet romance set during this time period and cozy mysteries.

Content: References to unmarried relations of the same and opposite genders but not detailed or overly specific. Some violent murders, but also not overly gruesome in their descriptions. I would consider this clean.

Happy New Year!

I want to wish you all a very, very happy New Year!

Every year I set some blogging goals. Some I reach and some I don't, but I set them anyway.

GOALS
  1. Update the links and pages on my blog. It's been a while, like a few years, so it really needs to be done.
  2. Do better in managing my eARCs. This is a goal every year. Maybe I'll actually do it this year.
  3. Read the books that were high on my list from last year that I missed. I really am always terrible at this because I sign up to review too many books (as if there is such a thing!), which means less time to read other books that aren't usually offered for review but are high on my list.
  4. Actually add links to books to my "Reviews" page.
  5. Meet my Goodreads' goal of 100 books.

I stopped this at five this year, which I think is a good, manageable amount. Let me know if you're setting any goals this year and what you're most excited about in 2025 (bookish or not). I'm looking forward to seeing what this year brings!
