Summary

At 25 years old, preschool teacher Kayla Harris is embarrassed to admit she's never been kissed. When Tony DiNunzio and his grieving nephew show up in her classroom, she can't help being drawn to both of them. If only her insecurities-and his guilt over his sister's death-would stop standing in their way.

As Christmas approaches, can these three come together to form a family... not just for the holidays, but forever?

My Review

FIRST KISS AT CHRISTMAS is a story about firsts and second chances. It's about a little boy who saw his mother die and the people who care about him. It's about a woman who's never been kissed, a man who is trying to find redemption and care for his nephew, and a woman who is ready for a new start. The story is full of small-town charm and holiday festivities, making it an overall heartwarming read.

I thought that Tony, Kayla and Sylvie were all good characters. Jax was adorable as was Paddington. The story was relatable in parts and the characters overall likable. I liked the idea of a character finding herself and letting go of the past. I also liked the theme of letting go and starting new. I really liked the friendships in this story and how characters were there for each other. I think my favorite aspect was the small-town feel and how friendly and welcoming the town was to these characters. The romance was sweet with some spark. There was also plenty holiday cheer which I loved. Of course, it had a heartwarming ending.

I did struggle with feeling totally immersed in this book. There are two main storylines, so I felt a bit like I was going back and forth. It also didn't really feel like a romance per se because of the second storyline and also because of the heavier subject matter. To me this read more like women's fiction with elements of romance. This isn't a bad thing, but it made for a longer read and one that I wasn't completely invested in even though I liked the characters and could empathize with what they were going through. There also was a weird mix of different aspects, like drug use, people living together, drinking, mean girls, and then sweet parts and inspirational moments. Plus lots of drama with characters reacting in extreme ways. I think the combination didn't quite work for me.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a bit of a difficult read, but overall, a sweet story that left me feeling cozy and ready for the Christmas season.

A delightful read... Copper for the Countess by Sally Britton (Review)

Copper for the Countess
(Hearts of Arizona #2)
By Sally Britton
Adult Historical Romance, Western
Paperback & ebook, 363 Pages
October 6, 2021 by Pink Citrus Books

Summary

A Victorian countess doesn't belong on a ranch, and a frosty cowboy knows nothing about raising a family. When the two have no choice but to rely on each other, is there any hope for happiness, let alone true love?

Lady Evelyn Lyon lost her husband and her fortune on the same day. Daughter in hand, she makes her way to the copper mines of Arizona, hoping her husband's stock in the Bisbee Copper Queen mine will make it possible for her to raise her little girl. Every man she's known has failed her, and she would far rather be alone than dependent on one. When the stock certificates in her possession prove fraudulent, Evelyn and her little girl are more alone than ever.

Chris Morgan, known as "Frosty" by cowhands and neighbors alike, never expected to have a family. When his cousin back east dies and leaves Chris with two children to raise, Chris has no choice but to change his plans. But raising children and running a ranch at the same time is a tall order. He's at his wit's end when he comes across a British noblewoman who has no business wandering around the desert without protection. When he learns her story, Chris knows they might be the solutions to each other's problems.

A hasty wedding and dusty ride to Chris's ranch starts their marriage of convenience off on a bumpy road. With children to raise and cattle to herd, Evelyn and Chris have no choice but to trust each other. But in the west, trust is hard won, and it's hard to grow anything...especially love.

Copper for the Countess is Book 2 in the Hearts of Arizona Series, but it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone romance.

My Review

COPPER FOR A COUNTESS is a story about a rough and rugged cowboy and an English lady who decide they can help each other by forming a marriage of convenience. Wonderful characters as well as three sweet children and a slowly-building romance make for a delightful story. A true joy to read!

I really loved these characters, both Evelyn and Chris! The three kids just added more to the dynamic and brought an added weight as well as joy to this story. I liked that the author let Evelyn have a bit of a rough period as she tried to learn and do things she had never before attempted. This brought a touch of genuineness but also humor to the story. I loved the way the women gathered around her as support, becoming dear friends. Chris had an equal amount of difficulty in raising two kids and in courting Evelyn. I also liked that things were a bit awkward and rough at first between Chris and Evelyn. They don't go in knowing each other extremely well and there was a lot they had to figure out. The chemistry between them was very apparent and swoon-worthy. There was a touch of danger that could have been developed more to add more of a climax, but otherwise I had no complaints. I'll be going back to read book one (even though this one can be read on its own) and am planning on reading the third book when it releases.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was such a delightful story! If you like westerns with relatable characters and sweet romance then I'd definitely recommend checking out this series!

How Not to Fall in Love
By Jacqueline Firkins
YA Contemporary, RomCom
Hardcover, Audiobook & ebook, 336 Pages
December 21, 2021 by Clarion Books

Summary

A hardened cynic and a hopeless romantic teach each other about love in this swoony and heartful romance that’s perfect for fans of Tweet Cute and The Upside of Falling.

Harper works in her mom’s wedding shop, altering dresses for petulant and picky brides who are more focused on hemlines than love. After years of watching squabbles break out over wedding plans, Harper thinks romance is a marketing tool. Nothing more. Her best friend Theo is her opposite. One date and he’s already dreaming of happily-ever-afters. He also plays the accordion, makes chain mail for Ren Festers, hangs out in a windmill-shaped tree house, cries over rom-coms, and takes his word-of-the-day calendar very seriously.

When Theo’s shocked to find himself nursing his umpteenth heartbreak, Harper offers to teach him how not to fall in love. Theo agrees to the lessons, as long as Harper proves she can date without falling in love. As the lessons progress and Theo takes them to heart, Harper has a harder time upholding her end of the bargain. She’s also checking out her window to see if Theo’s home from his latest date yet. She's even watching rom-coms. If she confesses her feelings, she’ll undermine everything she’s taught him. Or was he the one teaching her?

Interview

What inspired you to write a story where the main character, Nicki Mayfield, is a professional organizer?

Although I had the overall concept for the storyline in 2007/2008, I couldn’t figure out the main character and how she could fit with the story I wanted to tell. So, I tucked away the idea for ten years. During that time, I started my own professional organizing business, By George Organizing Solutions. Spending time with my clients, I often heard amazing stories about the items we were organizing or decluttering. One day it dawned on me that if I made my MC an organizer, she and her client could discover something unusual as they were working together (a mysterious business card). Instead of her client sharing the story behind it, however, they go on an adventure to uncover the secret it holds.

Would you tell us more about the other main character, Katherine O’Connor?

Katherine O’Connor is a 67-year-old eccentric socialite who loves shoes and her cat-child, Princess. Single and the CEO of her family’s business, she is a driven woman who doesn’t like to waste time and expects everyone to do as she wishes. She also believes she is unloved and broken, particularly because of the difficult relationship she had with her father growing up. Yet, there is a soft side to her. In the end, her character inspires us to remember that people aren’t always what they seem.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

Probably Nicki, as she is detail-oriented, loves to put things in order when she’s stressed or trying to make a decision, and her favorite places are The Container Store and the library, too!

What advice would they each give from their journey?

For Nicki, I think she would tell Ms. O’Connor that just because love isn’t always given the way we expect it, doesn’t mean that we aren’t loved and to not take your loved ones for granted just because they don’t show express love in the same way as you do.

For Ms. O’Connor, she would advise Nicki not to rush to judgment. There’s more to people than what you see on the outside.

What part or aspect of this story do you love the most?

I love so much of it, but the China part of the story is especially dear to my heart. My family and I lived there for 2.5 years (Aug 2006 – December 2008). Writing the scenes in that setting brought back so many wonderful memories for me and it helped me see how God uses our experiences in ways we never dreamed possible.

When you reach for a book to read, what genre do you grab and what are some of your favorites in that genre?

I’m an avid reader who loves anything well-written, but my go-to genre is Contemporary Women’s Fiction. My favorite authors in this genre include Kristen Billerbeck, Nicole Deese, Angela Hunt, and Susan May Warren.

What was a book that made you cry, a book that made you laugh and a book that made you swoon?

A book that made me cry? Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

A book that made me laugh? Husband Auditions by Angela Ruth Strong

A book that made me swoon? Hinds’ Feet in High Places by Hannah Hunard (it helped me understand God’s great love for us)

What’s something you enjoy doing when you’re not reading or writing?

There are two things, actually: I love tennis so you can find me watching a tournament live or on TV most of the year since the tennis season lasts that long. My other passion is traveling, especially to a beach where I can scuba dive and relax by the crystal blue waters.

What are you working on next?

I’m still working on the rest of Nicki’s story which makes up The Hopeful Heart Series. I just turned in the draft for book 2, Perfectly Placed (releasing July 5, 2022), to my editor and once I’ve submitted the manuscript to my publisher, Scrivenings Press, at the end of December, I’ll take a week off and then start book 3, Perfectly Matched (releasing April 2023).

Worthy of Redemption
(White Lake Romance #1)
By Krystina Renae Rankin
Christian Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 149 Pages
October 5, 2021 by Quirky Bullpen Press

Summary

Ashlynn Wilson left the small town of White Lake, Texas after tragedy struck on graduation night, taking the life of her best friend Victoria. Now, ten years later, she returns to help her parents after her father is diagnosed with cancer. When she arrives she finds herself having to face more than just memories after she discovers that the doctor treating her father is Victoria’s former boyfriend Heath Lancaster, the man Ashlynn holds responsible for her death. Even more surprising is that she is beginning to see him as a compassionate man of faith caring for her ill father; not the teenage boy who made poor decisions.

Heath Lancaster has never really forgiven himself for his girlfriend’s death so he isn’t surprised that his former classmate hasn’t either. Now that Ashlynn is back in town, he hopes their interactions can be minimal. However, when a situation arises that she is uniquely qualified for, he realizes they are going to be spending far more time together than either one of them had planned. What’s more, he realizes he enjoys her company. As old hurts turn into friendship, and maybe even love, can Heath prove to them both that he’s a man worthy of redemption?

My Review

WORTHY OF REDEMPTION is a story about a woman who is coming back home ten years after her best friend's death and the man she blames for that death. There's a bit of small-town charm, two wonderful families, a group of friends, and a slowly-building romance. However, it's mostly a story about faith, accepting Christ and forgiveness.

I really liked the excerpt I read for this book a while back and the premise, since I enjoy enemies-to-more stories. These two characters definitely start out as enemies. They never got along in high school when they felt pinned against each other in sharing Ashlynn's best friend's time who was also Heath's girlfriend. Then the best friend dies with plenty of blame between these two. Ten years later, Ashlynn comes back home and finds that some things have changed, including Heath.

I really wanted to like this story. I can say that I really liked Heath's and Ashlynn's families and friends. I also really liked Heath. Ashlynn was great sometimes and not at all at others. I always struggle liking stories when I don't like the main characters, so that was an issue for me. The small-town charm was minor and I thought that could have been developed more so I would have felt more immersed in this setting. I also had issues with random or weird parts of the story, such as phrases or ways the characters reacted that felt odd. I also didn't like the back and forth with Ashlynn. She doesn't like Heath, then she's okay with him, then she forgives him, but never mind she really doesn't. I could see that the author was trying to have her characters work through some things, but it didn't feel genuine or realistic. It honestly felt a bit jerky in how it was all put together. I think it needed a good critique group and editing to develop and refine the story to a point where I would have enjoyed it. I think there is potential here. I can see other stories that could be told, which I'm assuming will happen as this is the first book in the series.

Also a note to those who like their stories on the lighter religious side... there was a lot of religious context. Lots of prayers and talking about coming to Jesus before death as Ashlynn's dad was ill and wasn't a Christian. I think if you like stories heavy on the faith aspect and you agree with things then you'll be okay with all this. It definitely isn't for those who like a lighter touch or the faith element weaved through the story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This one wasn't for me, but other Christian romance readers may enjoy it.

“How much do you know about horses?” she asked.

He grinned. “I know the front end from the back. That’s about it.”

She studied him. “Well, if that’s true, just remember that both sides can be dangerous, so keep your distance.”

“Got it,” he said, taking hold of her arm to help her across the gravel-covered lot.

“Something tells me you’re dangerous too, Mr. Matheson.” Jake stopped and looked at her. “What does that mean?”

She felt heat rise to her cheeks. “Just that you’re a gentleman. Girls like that.”

Was he also blushing, or was it the midday sun that warmed his face?

“Even the independent ones?” he asked.

She smiled and started walking.

He took her arm again, this time with a lighter touch. “By the way,” he said, “we need to get our stories straight. I’d rather not let anyone here know that I’m with the TBI. Or that I’m here to protect you.”

“You think?” She grinned, looked straight ahead, and kept walking.

“Maybe just tell them I’m your friend visiting from out of town. And remember to call me by my first name.”

She stopped and swiveled toward him. “No worries, Jake. I’ve got this. I’m not going to break your cover. I’ll just tell them we’re dating.” She laughed and walked into the riding arena ahead of him.

Summary

Uncovering a dark family secret sends one woman through the history of Britain’s World War II spy network and glamorous 1930s Paris to save her family’s reputation.

Caroline Payne thinks it’s just another day of work until she receives a call from Mat Hammond, an old college friend and historian. But pleasantries are cut short. Mat has uncovered a scandalous secret kept buried for decades: In World War II, Caroline’s British great-aunt betrayed family and country to marry her German lover.

Determined to find answers and save her family’s reputation, Caroline flies to her family’s ancestral home in London. She and Mat discover diaries and letters that reveal her grandmother and great-aunt were known as the “Waite sisters.” Popular and witty, they came of age during the interwar years, a time of peace and luxury filled with dances, jazz clubs, and romance. The buoyant tone of the correspondence soon yields to sadder revelations as the sisters grow apart, and one leaves home for the glittering fashion scene of Paris, despite rumblings of a coming world war.

Each letter brings more questions. Was Caroline’s great-aunt actually a traitor and Nazi collaborator, or is there a more complex truth buried in the past? Together, Caroline and Mat uncover stories of spies and secrets, love and heartbreak, and the events of one fateful evening in 1941 that changed everything.

In this rich historical novel from award-winning author Katherine Reay, a young woman is tasked with writing the next chapter of her family’s story. But Caroline must choose whether to embrace a love of her own and proceed with caution if her family’s decades-old wounds are to heal without tearing them even further apart.

Excerpt

I'm hanging up my label maker.

While I'd been certain I would be the next Marie Kondo, organizing superstar, the lack of clients and shortage of funds in my bank account tells a different story. I grab another moving box and glide the packing tape across the bottom to secure it. The screech of the gun as it connects the two flaps resounds as the truth flashes in front of me.

After three years of blood, sweat, and tears, I've failed at the one thing I'd believed I was meant to do.

When I open a side desk drawer that holds a rainbow assortment of alphabetically arranged files, my heart flutters at the sight of everything in perfect order - just the kind of thing that would make my mother anxious.

I wince. Mom. Without a job, I have no other choice but to move back home with her.

As if on cue, her familiar blue Honda pulls up outside my window.

Seriously, what else could go wrong today?

Plowing my way through the heap of boxes, I grab my coat and purse from the chair and dash toward the door. Before I can step outside and hide my career woes, my mother walks in.

“Nicki, I ...” Mom closes the oce door and studies the room. “What's going on in here?”

I survey the boxes scattered around the tiny cubicle. “Packing?”

“I see that, but why?”

“I’m closing up shop.” I dig my shoe into the stained beige carpet. “Bridgeport’s Organizing Business of the Year is no longer.”

About the Author

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

As a child, whenever anyone asked me that question, I always had 2 answers ready to offer: an author or a Wimbledon champion (that’s a tennis tournament, in case you didn’t know).

Although I never made it to a professional level of tennis stardom (or an amateur level for that matter; the best I could do was local tennis club play once or twice a week), I was able to realize my dream of becoming an author.

But it was a long time coming.

There were detours along the way – teaching elementary school, running children’s ministries, parenting and starting my own organizing business – as well as a few unexpected overseas adventures, but I finally put pencil to paper (yes, I’m old school) and used all my life experiences to write a story that I hoped would make a difference.

With the publication of my first book, Perfectly Arranged (Scrivenings Press, October 2021), I guess I’m finally grown up now and my dreams have come true.

However, now that I’ve reached adulthood I don’t plan on retiring. No, I think I’ll keep going … I have plenty of imaginary people and places to share with the world.

(The Lily Sparrow Chronicles #3)
Middle-grade, Fairytale, Fantasy

Summary

Lily Sparrow has finally created an equation for being a good princess. Things are adding up and making sense, and she’s even growing a measurable amount more excited about her future. But unexpected variables keep being tossed into her equation:

1. Carole Claus is facing her first hurdle as Santa. She needs Lily’s help.
2. Lily’s Half-Birthday--an important Smythian tradition--is coming up, requiring her to find time to prepare for it.
3. Her algebra teacher has an unusual (and stressful plan) for Lily.
4. Lily remains convinced that her mom is hiding something from her.
5. The investigation into the traitor is an on-going source of stress and tension at work for Lily and Calo.
6. Oh, and Calo’s still betrothed to Su’Sauna, making life difficult and confusing all around.

Will Lily be able to place these variables securely in her equation? Will the Sparrow family find a way to convince their critics they are good for the Kingdom? Or will everything fall apart--subtracting all the good will Lily has already earned from her citizens?

About the Author

Kristee Ravan lives in Oklahoma with her husband, daughter, and pet fish, Val (short for Valentine). She wanted to be many things as she grew up including a general, an artist, and an architect. But she never bothered to say, "I want to be a writer when I grow up." She was always writing stories and thought of herself as a writer anyway. She sent her first story to a publisher in the sixth grade. (It was rejected - in a nice way.) When she is not making up stories in her head, she enjoys reading, juggling, green smoothies, playing dollhouse with her daughter, and hearing from her fans. You can contact Kristee at the facebook page for her Lily Sparrow books: The Lily Sparrow Chronicles.

Christian Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 195 Pages

Summary

He’s a billionaire hiding a devastating diagnosis. She’ll do whatever it takes to help her sick, matchmaking mom. A freak accident throws them together, but will his big secret tear them apart?

When Ryan Lawson’s business partners force him to go on a wilderness retreat to come to terms with a shocking diagnosis, the last thing on Ryan’s mind is romance. But when he’s stranded in the woods with a sweet young event planner, all thoughts of business take a back seat to her girl-next-door appeal.

Fresh off a bad breakup, Zara Georgopoulos comes to Vermont to help her terminally ill mom work through her bucket list—not fall in love with a man who’s the exact opposite of her usual type. But when Ryan starts working his way into her heart with his kindness and generosity, she needs to make a decision: Trust the biotech billionaire not to walk all over her, or go back to guarding her heart.

Stuck in the wilds of Vermont, they forge a tenuous connection. When Ryan finally shares the truth about his illness, will it bring them closer together . . . or shatter Zara’s trust in him for good?

Inspired by 2 Corinthians 12:9, The Billionaire’s Secret is a sweet inspirational romance with a swoony hero, LOTS of entertaining banter, and a strong Christian message. Download your copy today!

My Review

THE BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET is a story about a guy who feels like he may never have the life he dreamed of after being diagnosed with an autoimmune illness and a girl who feels like she's never been the one chosen. It's full of sweet moments between the friendship that blooms, a shared bond over illness and an adorable romance. Definitely recommended to Christian romance and clean romance fans!

I loved both of these characters from the start! Ryan is a successful businessman and very good at what he does with the intelligence to go along with that. He's got a couple of best friends and a great job. His illness hits him hard and he doesn't know exactly how to deal with it and the future of a wife and family he feels he's lost. I really loved the mix of charm, humor and genuine kindness Ryan has. He's pretty much the perfect guy, but also in that he's not perfect. He's vulnerable and unsure exactly what to do. Zara is very giving and talented in her own right. She has been left behind or put in second or third place by others too often, which has really hit her confidence and feeling of self-worth. I wanted her to be a bit more confident and go for what she deserves, but I also understood her feelings and why she acts as she does. These two hit it off in a very genuine way. Plus they literally get stuck together, which was crazy but also a fun way to play off of sparks (you'll have to read it to know what I mean). There are some things they have to work through to get to their happily-ever-after, so even though the ending was expected the journey wasn't.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. These characters faced some tough things, which I thought the author touched on well without making the story too heavy, but also adding some depth to it. The characters were likable, the story was easy to read with some good faith-filled moments, and the romance was perfectly sweet. I'm looking forward to book two!
