Summary

Living as the assistant keeper at the Puffin Point lighthouse for four years, Leonard Tarby admires everything about his coastal home: sweeping ocean seascapes, lush, tangled forests, and unobstructed views of the stars he enjoys charting. There was only one thing Leonard would change, and that is the absence of a loving bride by his side. Certain the only way to achieve that goal is to send for a bride through the mail, Leonard sits back to wait for her arrival, dreaming of a life of wedded bliss soon to come. The young lady is soon on her way to Puffin Point but goes missing en route. Is there foul play involved or did she simply get cold feet? Will Leonard ever have a bride of his own? Find out in this sweet historical romance full of dangers, intrigue, and love, all beneath the ever-watchful beam of a Pacific lighthouse.

“Will I have any specific duties at Puffin Point?”

He smiled at her, sending flutters sprawling through her middle. “Would you like some?”

Orissa shrugged. “I know very little about the tedium of life at a lighthouse. I’d imagine there is much to be done.”

“There is,” Leonard allowed, “but I think it grand if you might willingly care for the house and help with the chores in the lighthouse yard. What we can’t grow or raise, we purchase in Spruce Hill. The Tuckers and I tend a garden, which we share, and we’ve got chickens and a milk cow. Charlotte has made great strides in cheese-making, though there is still room for improvement. That cow was a Godsend. Having fresh milk and butter sure makes a man feel complete.”

Smiling at this, Orissa said, “I don’t have any experience in cheese-making, so best leave that to Charlotte. I would love to see the lighthouse, though, to know what you do every day.”

Softly, Leonard enfolded her hand in his and raised it to brush a kiss across her knuckles. The gesture sent skitters up and down her arms and a skip-hop to her pulse. “And I’d enjoy showing it to you. It’s truly a spectacular sight, unmatched by anything you’ve ever seen.”

“Are you sure?” Orissa teased, cocking an eyebrow. “You do realize I’ve traveled around the world and seen some pretty incredible places.”

Leonard laughed, the rich timber of the sound blanketing her soul.

“If I’m not begin too forward, might I ask why none of the girls in Oregon caught your eye?”

“There aren’t many in Spruce Hill. The only single young woman is Lettie Clinton, and she’s nothing like you.”

Warmth flooded her at his praise. “How so?”

His hazel gaze met hers as he considered. “There’s an honesty in your eyes, Orissa, that seems to deepen into your soul. Couple that with your natural grace and beauty, a man could take a lifetime soaking it all in.”
