I just finished reading The Opera Sisters last week (will be sharing my review soon) and it reminded me of the many people who fought in WWII in seemingly small, but in all actuality, big ways. I have several other books on my list set during the same time period and want to share this next one with you that comes out in about a month. It's my pick this week...

Angels of the Resistance
By Noelle Salazar
Historical Fiction, WWII Fiction
Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook & eBook, 416 Pages
November 29, 2022 by MIRA

Summary

Angels of the Resistance brings to life a deadly-effective and deeply moving sisterhood.” —Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Rose Code

From the bestselling author of The Flight Girls comes a story inspired by true events, about courageous women who risked everything for country, for family, and for each other.

Netherlands, 1940

As bombs fall across Europe, fourteen-year-old Lien Vinke fears that the reality of war is inescapable. Though she lives a quiet life with her mother and older sister, Elif, in their small town of Haarlem, they are no strangers to heartache, having recently suffered an immeasurable loss. And when the Nazis invade the Netherlands, joining the Dutch resistance with Elif offers just the atonement Lien craves.

Trained to shoot by their late father, the sisters are deadly wolves in sheep’s clothing. They soon find themselves entrenched in the underground movement, forging friendships with the other young recruits, and Lien even discovers a kindred spirit in a boy named Charlie. But in wartime, emotional attachments are a liability she can’t afford, especially when a deeply personal mission jeopardizes everything she holds dear—her friendships, her family, and her one shot at redemption.

“This story of two teenage sisters who risk everything to join the Dutch Resistance is a dazzling tour-de-force.” —Karen Robards, bestselling author of The Black Swan of Paris

A delightful look into the Austen family... Godmersham Park by Gill Hornby (Review) #histfic #historicalfiction #biographical #newbooks #austenesque @Austenprose

Welcome to my tour stop with Austenprose PR for
this new historical fiction. Find my review below...

Godmersham Park:
A Novel of the Austen Family
By Gill Hornby
Historical Biographical Fiction, Austenesque
Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 416 Pages
August 8, 2023 by Pegasus Books

Summary

A richly imagined novel inspired by the true story of Anne Sharp, a governess who became very close with Jane Austen and her family.

On January 21, 1804, Anne Sharpe arrives at Godmersham Park in Kent to take up the position of governess. At thirty-one years old, she has no previous experience of either teaching or fine country houses. Her mother has died, and she has nowhere else to go. Anne is left with no choice. For her new charge—twelve-year-old Fanny Austen—Anne's arrival is all novelty and excitement.

The governess role is a uniquely awkward one. Anne is neither one of the servants, nor one of the family, and to balance a position between the "upstairs" and "downstairs" members of the household is a diplomatic chess game. One wrong move may result in instant dismissal. Anne knows that she must never let down her guard.

When Mr. Edward Austen's family comes to stay, Anne forms an immediate attachment to Jane. They write plays together and enjoy long discussions. However, in the process, Anne reveals herself as not merely pretty, charming, and competent; she is clever too. Even her sleepy, complacent, mistress can hardly fail to notice.

Meanwhile Jane's brother, Henry, begins to take an unusually strong interest in the lovely young governess. And from now on, Anne's days at Godmersham Park are numbered.

Praise for the Book

"This is a deeply imagined and deeply moving novel. Reading it made me happy and weepy in equally copious amounts…I read it straight through without looking up.”— Karen Joy Fowler, author of The Jane Austen Bookclub

Hornby’s skillful mix of fact and fiction captures the complexities of the Austens and their era, and her crisp, nimble prose sparkles throughout. Best of all, Hornby genuinely channels the sentiment of 19th-century English literature. Janeites aren’t the only readers who will relish this smart, tender tale."— Publishers Weekly, starred review

“…a well-written and delightfully observant novel…an excellent read.”— The Historical Novel Society

My Review

GODMERSHAM PARK is a delightful look inside the house of Jane Austen's brother. Based from the insights of Austen's niece and from the view of her niece's governess, it gives a unique portrait of the family with all its complexities. Fans of the author and historical fiction will find the story of interest as they are immersed in this world and the difficulties of a woman finding her place when she is neither a servant nor of high society.

This is the first book I've read from this author and I immediately loved her writing style as well as the character of Austen's niece's governess, Anne Sharpe. As the story moves forward, so do the intricacies of this Austen household and Jane Austen's family. Anne's story unfolds as she comes to some realizations and must choose what she will make of her own life. The author does a marvelous job of immersing readers in this time period as well as the life of a governess. It's a bittersweet tale, but one full of enjoyment and delightful looks at a beloved author.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a thoroughly enjoyable story, particularly for those who have an interest in the biographical aspects of the Austen family. Well researched and written, immersing readers in a period of life that was full of complexities and possibilities.

Content: Some innuendo but clean. Mild bisexual representation.
Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Austenprose PR, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Summary

England, 1820

Rosalind Newbury is counting down the days until her wedding to the Duke of Marlow, a man she has only met twice. The marriage is more an agreement between two families and less a romantic connection between two hearts, but Rosalind becoming a duchess will elevate her family’s status to dizzying heights. And the duke is a kind man who will care for Rosalind, even if he doesn’t love her.

She only has three weeks before her life changes forever, and she knows exactly how she wants to spend her days. As a child, Ros was inspired by her adventurous Aunt Alice and created a list of ten things to do before her wedding day. So far, Ros has done none of them.

She is determined to tackle each item, though she’ll have to accomplish them all in secret. After all, a soon-to-be-duchess is not usually allowed to bury treasure in the pasture, eat sweets all day, or learn how to swim. She enlists the help of her best friend, Liza, who brings along her cousin, Charlie, a prodigal son-turned-boxer who has come to the countryside to mend his reputation and learn how to be his father’s heir.

Together, the three of them work to complete the list, and as each item is crossed off, an unlikely friendship blossoms between Ros and Charlie. The more time they spend together, the more Ros falls in love with this imperfect man and his good heart.

With the wedding looming, Ros must decide to either admit her romantic feelings for Charlie and risk her family’s future, or keep her promise to marry the duke and start a new life as a noblewoman.

“SOMETHING EATING YOU?”
Arms folded as he propped against the wall outside the interview room, Range trained his focus on the woman sitting on the other side of the one-way glass. “She gave up too easy.”
Pike joined him. “Who cares as long as we have her, and now a couple dozen women and children freed of her.”
Though Range nodded, it still didn’t add up.
“What?”
“Something’s not right.” He peeled off the wall and faced the onetime master chief. “You’ve seen it—these women are terrified to flee. Yet we infiltrated a heavily fortified compound and find them ... what? Escaping.” He shook his head. “Doesn’t add up.”
Pike studied him for a long second.
“I’m not overthinking it.”
“It’s what you do best.” Laughing, he slapped Range’s shoulder. “Relax. We got them—her. She’s there and she’s not going anywhere.”

Summary

A BookBub Best Romance of 2022

A London heiress rides out to the wilds of the English countryside to honor a marriage of convenience with a mysterious and reclusive stranger.

Tall, dark, and dour, the notorious Captain Jasper Blunt was once hailed a military hero, but tales abound of his bastard children and his haunted estate in Yorkshire. What he requires now is a rich wife to ornament his isolated ruin, and he has his sights set on the enchanting Julia Wychwood.

For Julia, an incurable romantic cursed with a crippling social anxiety, navigating a London ballroom is absolute torture. The only time Julia feels any degree of confidence is when she’s on her horse. Unfortunately, a young lady can’t spend the whole of her life in the saddle, so Julia makes an impetuous decision to take her future by the reins—she proposes to Captain Blunt.

In exchange for her dowry and her hand, Jasper must promise to grant her freedom to do as she pleases. To ride—and to read—as much as she likes without masculine interference. He readily agrees to her conditions, with one provision of his own: Julia is forbidden from going into the tower rooms of his estate and snooping around his affairs. But the more she learns of the beastly former hero, the more intrigued she becomes…

“If you’re a fan of Beauty and the Beast, this regency romance will rapidly become a new favorite of yours. Wallflower meets an infamous war hero in this fascinating and intriguing love story.”— BuzzFeed

“Mimi Matthews never disappoints, with richly drawn characters and couples whose individual shortcomings become strengths, when paired together. In this Beauty and the Beast retelling, we get to root for two underdogs who get to rewrite their own stories.”— Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wish You Were Here

The Belle of Belgrave Square is such tremendous, good fun: a heroine with a big horse, an even bigger novel-reading habit, and a hidden anxiety; a hero with a crumbling estate, a trio of wary children, and a literary secret—what's not to love? Mimi Matthews paints Victorian England with vivid humor, and her Belles of London is set to go on for at least a few more much-anticipated installments. Julian Fellowes fans will rejoice!”— Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye

My Review

THE BELLE OF BELGRAVE SQUARE is another delightful story in this series that creatively twists the classic Beauty and the Beast story. Set in Victorian England between a wallflower and a military man rumored to be devil incarnate, shows how assumptions can be wildly wrong, and opposites can more than attract, but find a happily ever after.

I met the heroine of this story, Julia, in the first book in this series. It was fun to see how her story unfolded as she was only lightly referenced in the first book and I had some questions on how everything occurred. Julia finds herself stuck but doesn't know how to escape. She was a sweet character who had to find her backbone. Jasper was a great character with his foreboding mask and terrible reputation. I loved how things played out when they realized they might be able to help each other and then further when they start to really got to know each other. The children were a lovely addition to this story. The romance was slow-building with a constant attraction between the two almost from the start, leading to plenty of chemistry. Of course there's a very sweet and triumphant ending, as readers would expect, but the journey was definitely an entertaining one.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a highly entertaining and delightful read! It's a story that will pull on readers' emotions from heartfelt sadness for these characters' situations, to moments that will make them laugh and some that are swoon worthy. Definitely worth the read as an escape and for fans of the author.

Victorian high society’s most daring equestrienne finds love and an unexpected ally in her fight for independence in the strong arms of London’s most sought after and devastatingly handsome half-Indian tailor.

Evelyn Maltravers understands exactly how little she's worth on the marriage mart. But to truly capture London's attention she'll need a habit-maker who's not afraid to take risks with his designs—and with his heart.

Half-Indian tailor Ahmad Malik has always had a talent for making women beautiful, inching his way toward recognition by designing riding habits for Rotten Row's infamous Pretty Horsebreakers—but no one compares to Evelyn. Her unbridled spirit enchants him, awakening a depth of feeling he never thought possible.

But pushing boundaries comes at a cost and not everyone is pleased to welcome Evelyn and Ahmad into fashionable society. With obstacles spanning between them, the indomitable pair must decide which hurdles they can jump and what matters most: making their mark or following their hearts?

When their father's death leaves them impoverished, Sarah Summers and her genteel sisters fear they will be forced to sell the house and separate to earn livelihoods as governesses or companions. Determined to stay together, Sarah convinces them to open their seaside home to guests to make ends meet and provide for their ailing mother. Instead of the elderly invalids they expect to receive, however, they find themselves hosting eligible gentlemen. Sarah is soon torn between a growing attraction to a mysterious Scottish widower and duty to her family.

Viola Summers wears a veil to cover her scar. When forced to choose between helping in her family's new guest house and earning money to hire a maid to do her share, she chooses the latter. She reluctantly agrees to read to some of Sidmouth's many invalids, preferring the company of a few elders with failing eyesight to the fashionable guests staying in their home. But when her first client turns out to be a wounded officer in his thirties, Viola soon wishes she had chosen differently. Her new situation exposes her scars--both visible and those hidden deep within--and her cloistered heart will never be the same.

Join the Summers sisters on the Devonshire coast, where they discover the power of friendship, loyalty, love, and new beginnings.

Excerpt
From the section on editors, written by Rowena Kuo

At writers’ conferences, I expect to see rough drafts, as that is a big part of the experience. Authors go to conferences to learn and receive help with their manuscripts. However, before you submit your work to an agent or a publishing house, I recommend that you get your manuscript edited and polished. A freelance developmental or content editor can help with that  process. They point out loopholes in your story, may suggest rearrangement of chapters, or strengthening of your plot, conflict, and characters.

Where do you find freelance editors? We come in all genres and all budgets. You can find us on social media, through referrals from other writers, and you can find us at writers conferences. A developmental edit can cost you between $300-$2500, depending on word count and the time it would take to edit your book. If writing your novel takes you a year or more, having it edited could take just as long. Be patient. Before you obtain the help of a content editor, a way to improve your manuscript would be for you, the author, to become a Master of Firsts.

How many numbers are there between 0 and 1? As there is an infinite number between 0 and 1, so, too, are there infinite word combinations to consider before you even write your first sentence. A Master of Firsts recognizes the gift of infinity to lift the limits off how the story comes to life. What separates failure and greatness fall to just one word: and.

What is your and? With what content will you fill your pages? There is infinity between failure and greatness. “And” equals infinity. Decide now that failure is not an option.

You have only one chance to make a first impression, so the opening lines of your work need to have impact. The first sentence intrigues the reader, must be compelling enough to hold the reader’s attention, and may or may not be its own paragraph. The first sentence introduces the author’s voice. The first line, which sets the tone, can be a quote from a character, and may be in the middle of an action. A Master of Firsts draws the reader in by the first paragraph. Every word matters, so don’t waste any. Use strong, active verbs.

An ideal first page has between 100-300 words. You are developing a relationship with your reader. With your words, you are painting a picture of what your characters are experiencing. This establishes a dialogue between you and your reader. Your first page should also establish your Point of View (POV) character.

In 1942, an impulsive promise to her brother before he goes off to the European front puts Avis Montgomery in the unlikely position of head librarian in small-town Maine. Though she has never been much of a reader, when wartime needs threaten to close the library, she invents a book club to keep its doors open. The women she convinces to attend the first meeting couldn't be more different--a wealthy spinster determined to aid the war effort, an exhausted mother looking for a fresh start, and a determined young war worker.

At first, the struggles of the home front are all the club members have in common, but over time, the books they choose become more than an escape from the hardships of life and the fear of the U-boat battles that rage just past their shores. As the women face personal challenges and band together in the face of danger, they find they have more in common than they think. But when their growing friendships are tested by secrets of the past and present, they must decide whether depending on each other is worth the cost.

Excerpt from Defending Honor

“Preston!” She screamed over the crackle of the fire and whipped out her phone to call 911. Alarms from a fire truck blared in the distance, so she shoved her phone back in her pocket. Help was on the way.

She skirted the perimeter of the property, staying clear of the flames. “Preston!”

When she hit the backyard, the sound of barking stopped her dead in her tracks, and she looked at the burning house.

Preston’s face appeared at the window across from her. He banged on the pane. “It’s stuck! I can’t find anything heavy enough in the room to break the glass.”

Laila pulled her weapon from her holster. “Stand back!”

Preston looked at her, his eyes wide. She held up her gun. “Back away from the window. The bullet will shatter the glass.”

He got the message and retreated. Once she knew she wouldn’t accidentally shoot Preston, she fired a single shot. The bullet pierced the center of the pane, and the glass splintered into a thousand fragments. “Okay,” she yelled.

Preston reappeared, using his elbow to knock out any remaining pieces of glass. He disappeared for a second but returned with a blanket to cover the windowsill.

Preston ducked out of view again and returned with a golden retriever. “Can you grab Duke?” he asked. He lowered the dog out the window, and Laila wrapped her arms around the dog’s middle, lowering him to safety. But not before she got a paw in her face and a slobbery lick.

The sizzle of fire made Laila’s heart stop. She wouldn’t rest until Preston’s feet were on the ground. “Preston, you’re going to have to jump.”

“Run, Laila. Get out of here. The propane tanks in the garage might blow. I’ll be right behind you.”

He threw his legs over the sill, and Laila bolted the minute his boots hit the ground.

They’d reached the woods at the edge of the property when a tremor nearly knocked her down. The house erupted into a giant fireball, and flames lit the sky like a fireworks display.

For a moment, all they could do was stare.

“I think I might need a bodyguard after all,” Preston finally muttered.

Sami A. Abrams grew up hating to read. It wasn't until her 30s that she found authors who captured her attention. Now, most evenings you can find her engrossed in a romantic suspense novel. In her opinion, a crime plus a little romance is the recipe for a great story. Sami lives in Northern California, but she will always be a Kansas girl at heart. She has a love of sports, family, and travel. However, a cabin at Lake Tahoe writing her next story is definitely at the top of her list.

Kelly Underwood's favorite things are reading, writing, and drinking coffee. She was born in New Hampshire, but don't ask her about snow, because she's been a Florida girl since she was twelve. She writes book reviews for her blog bestinsuspense.com and is an active member of the Central Florida chapter of the American Christian Fiction Writers. She's a sucker for a good suspense novel, the kind you have to read cover-to-cover until the mystery is solved and the bad guys are in handcuffs. If you're looking for her, she's probably on her back patio with a Kindle in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. Visit her at kellyunderwoodauthor.com
