Welcome! Find out more about this new historical women's fiction and read my review below...

Bloomsbury Girls: A Novel
By Natalie Jenner
Adult Historical Fiction, Women's Fiction
Hardcover, Audiobook & eBook, 368 Pages
May 17, 2022 by St. Martin's Press

Summary

Natalie Jenner, the internationally bestselling author of The Jane Austen Society, returns with a compelling and heartwarming story of post-war London, a century-old bookstore, and three women determined to find their way in a fast-changing world in Bloomsbury Girls.

Bloomsbury Books is an old-fashioned new and rare bookstore that has persisted and resisted change for a hundred years, run by men and guided by the general manager's unbreakable fifty-one rules. But in 1950, the world is changing, especially the world of books and publishing, and at Bloomsbury Books, the girls in the shop have plans:

Vivien Lowry: Single since her aristocratic fiancé was killed in action during World War II, the brilliant and stylish Vivien has a long list of grievances--most of them well justified and the biggest of which is Alec McDonough, the Head of Fiction.

Grace Perkins: Married with two sons, she's been working to support the family following her husband's breakdown in the aftermath of the war. Torn between duty to her family and dreams of her own.

Evie Stone: In the first class of female students from Cambridge permitted to earn a degree, Evie was denied an academic position in favor of her less accomplished male rival. Now she's working at Bloomsbury Books while she plans to remake her own future.

As they interact with various literary figures of the time--Daphne Du Maurier, Ellen Doubleday, Sonia Blair (widow of George Orwell), Samuel Beckett, Peggy Guggenheim, and others--these three women with their complex web of relationships, goals and dreams are all working to plot out a future that is richer and more rewarding than anything society will allow.

Advance Praise

"Jenner follows The Jane Austen Society (2020) with another top-notch reading experience, using the same deft hand at creating complex, emotionally engaging characters [against] a backdrop chock-full of factual historical information... Fans of Christina Baker Kline, Kate Quinn and Pam Jenoff [will] appreciate this gem." —Booklist (starred review)

"An illuminating yarn... Fans of emotional historical fiction will be charmed." —Publishers Weekly

"Bloomsbury Girls is an immersive tale of three women determined to forge their own paths in 1950s London. Jenner has proven to be a master at spinning charming, earnest characters and paints a vivid picture of postwar England. I wanted to stay lost in her world forever!" —Stephanie Wrobel, internationally bestselling author of Darling Rose Gold

"Bloomsbury Girls is a book lover's dream, one of those rare reads that elicits a sense of book-ish wistfulness and nostalgia. Jenner has created a colorful cast of characters in a story about friendship, perseverance, and the ways that determined women can band together in a man's world. You're in for a treat." —Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Apothecary

"In a London still reeling from the ravages of World War II and the changes war has brought to English society, three young women take their futures into their own hands. With Bloomsbury Girls, Natalie Jenner has penned a timely and beautiful ode to ambition, friendship, bookshops, and the written word." —Janet Skeslien Charles, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Library

“In post-war London, Bloomsbury Books survived The Blitz until Vivien Lowry, Grace Perkins, and Evie Stone set off their own bomb on the stuffy all-male management. What ensues is the most delightful, witty, and endearing story you will read this year. Natalie Jenner, bestselling author of The Jane Austen Society, proves that she was not a one hit wonder. Like Austen, her second book is even better than the first.” —Laurel Ann Nattress, editor of Jane Austen Made Me Do It

My Review

BLOOMSBURY GIRLS is a story full of unique and interesting characters revolving around a bookstore set a few years after WWII. It sets a picture of society at the time, with the different complexities of women's and men's roles as well as race. Different relationships form and intersect all while the author weaves a story that pulls on the heart. A superb read for historical fans as well as those who find stories set in bookstores with a feminist vein to be quite their thing.

Jenner's writing is honestly so well done that it makes it easy to become immersed in the story. It's written in a way so these characters come alive and also allows for moments of introspection as well as little nuggets of truth and wisdom. I found the whole historical setting and background in regards to women's roles and women authors to be interesting and relatable as a woman. Having said that, the story would appeal to everyone. It just especially resonated with me. There were definitely things that upset me, but also things that made me laugh and sigh. I couldn't help getting invested in these characters' lives and cheering them on, particularly Evie. I also could relate to the other characters. It was a masterly woven story from beginning to end.

In the end, was it what I wished for? It was a marvelous story that pulled on all my emotions and left my heart full in the end. Highly recommended!

Content: Two closed-door scenes and some innuendo.
Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Austenprose, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

A Message from Author Natalie Jenner

Dear readers,

I am immensely grateful for the outpouring of affection that so many of you have expressed for my debut novel The Jane Austen Society and its eight main characters. When I wrote its epilogue (in one go and without ever changing a word), I wanted to give each of Adam, Mimi, Dr. Gray, Adeline, Yardley, Frances, Evie and Andrew the happy Austenesque ending they each deserved. But I could not let go of servant girl Evie Stone, the youngest and only character inspired by real life (my mother, who had to leave school at age fourteen, and my daughter, who does eighteenth-century research for a university professor and his team). Bloomsbury Girls continues Evie’s adventures into a 1950s London bookshop where there is a battle of the sexes raging between the male managers and the female staff, who decide to pull together their smarts, connections, and limited resources to take over the shop and make it their own. There are dozens of new characters in Bloomsbury Girls from several different countries, and audiobook narration was going to require a female voice of the highest training and caliber. When I learned that British stage and screen actress Juliet Stevenson, CBE, had agreed to narrate, I knew that my story could not be in better hands, and I so hope you enjoy reading or listening to it.

Warmest regards, Natalie

Summary

IS GOD SOVEREIGN OVER LOVE STORIES?

Amara Ikezie is a new grad nurse who is thrilled to start her dream job in Atlanta’s biggest children’s hospital. But when her best friend gets engaged, Amara is faced with the looming pressure from her mom to find her own man. Determined to escape the pressure to marry, Amara takes on a task to find the ‘perfect’ man who ticks all the boxes on her list.

Raymond Aderinto is a pediatric cardiologist with a wall of accolades and a string of failed relationships. After his fourth girlfriend dumps him, Raymond vows to get confirmation from God first before entering into his next relationship—even though he’d love to find his bride before turning thirty.

When Raymond spills coffee on Amara’s scrubs, he becomes certain she’s the woman God wants to be his wife. But unfortunately for him, Raymond doesn’t tick Amara’s boxes, and worst of all, Amara is sure her Igbo mom would never approve of a marriage to a man from the Yoruba tribe.

Despite Amara’s efforts to stay away from Raymond and convince herself he is not the one for her, her growing attraction for his character, values, and vision gives her more reasons to wonder if she was wrong about her prejudices toward him. When another doctor walks into Amara’s life who ticks all her boxes and shows interest in her, she is caught between running into his ‘perfect’ arms, or going with Raymond who is turning out to be more perfect than she thought.

The One Who Loves Me, book two in the Sovereign Love series, is a beautiful standalone novel about surrender and learning to take comfort in the sovereign goodness of a loving God who writes the best love stories.

Excerpt

The One who loves me has done this. He has opened my eyes to see that this was never about me. God’s love has fought for me and stood by me even in my stubbornness and disobedience. His love broke through my insecurities and brought me out of my comfort zone. It lifted me up and showed me the light.

I tried to follow my own way, but God knew this was the best path for me, so He kept me. He had mercy on me and brought me back here. He favored me with someone as wonderful as Ray, who I can share this vision and purpose with. All this time, I was focusing on my inadequacies instead of looking at the power of God. Of course I’ll never be good enough, but God is enough for me. I refuse to go back to the bondage of believing the lies in my head. This is my purpose and I will serve God with all my heart.

Summary

IS GOD SOVEREIGN OVER TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY?

Bullies and family disasters have left eighteen-year-old Teeyana Sparks filled with anxiety and doubt. She feels pressured to believe in God, but as she embarks on her college journey in the hope of one day working at Google as a graphic designer, the only thing she believes in is controlling her own life. Things change when she meets Jayden Williams—the guy with a charming smile and kind heart.

Struggling with grief and recovering from a season of depression, nineteen-year-old Jayden is determined to help Teeyana believe in God’s goodness again. But when yet another tragedy strikes close to home, Teeyana’s response exposes Jayden’s unhealed wounds and tips him into a mental health relapse.

With the looming possibility of not getting her dream life, Teeyana is caught between holding on to her illusion of control and surrendering to a God she’s rejected. And as Jayden strives to break out of his despondency, he has to face that letting God in may involve him letting go of his friendship with Teeyana. Teeyana and Jayden must wrestle with uncomfortable truths, and the pride in their hearts, in order to face their biggest giant—God’s sovereignty over both triumph and tragedy.

The One Who Knows Me, book one in the Sovereign Love series, is a heart-warming standalone novel about hope and learning to take comfort in the sovereign goodness of a loving God who knows all things.

Excerpt

The door explodes. Wood shards pierce the air. I throw out my arms to keep the wood from hitting me. Stop! Warmth floods over me from the center of my being, radiating blue in a sphere around me. I fist my hands and the fragments stop mid-air. I stare at the circle surrounding me and the scattered particles of wood suspended in the air in front of me. Has time stopped? I’ve never done anything like this before. Then I glimpse beyond the bluish glow toward the man, my father, moving through the shattered door.

He’s much younger than I would’ve imagined, closer to my age than someone who should be my father. And he’s tall. Taller than Lucas.

He steps inside the cottage and swipes his hand across the dangling debris in front of his face without surprise. They drop to the ground when he touches them, plinking against the floor. The rest is still in the air. He’s slim with dark hair parted down the middle. There’s a gray streak on one side of his head. Though he just destroyed the door as easily as I call objects, he doesn’t look evil. In fact, he’s quite handsome, but his eyes are cruel, and his smirk is condescending.

“We meet at last, daughter.” He bows his head slightly, but he never takes his eyes off me. “The rumors are true.” He studies my face, and I can almost feel his look trailing across my hair. His stare holds a cold calculation. It’s the same gaze I have suffered many times on the pauper’s block—judging me, evaluating how valuable I could be to him.

I don’t know what to say, so I’m silent. I continue to study him back until I see two beasts step toward the threshold behind him. They’re just as I remember, with warped features, dark skin, sharp teeth, and claws. Fear shoots through my body and then anger on top of it. My mother is dead because of them. And he is their master.

Appalled, I step back and unclench my fists. The wood pieces that I’ve held in the air fall to the floor in a chorus of wooden clinks. This is not the father I wished for. He is just as Lucas described—vile and depraved.

Edward and Amelia
By Karen Thornell
Adult Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 320 Pages
June 6th 2022 by Covenant Communications

Summary

The last thing Amelia Kennington wants is to participate in the London Season. But the daughter of a duke is not afforded such opinions. She must put forth a subdued facade, but beneath it is a well-hidden fire that surfaces only when provoked—such as when an overly familiar gentleman startles her and she falls into the Serpentine.

Edward Drayton, the Earl of Norwich, has gained a reputation as Society’s most decorated rake. And while there are benefits to such a reputation, it no longer gives him the satisfaction it once did. This Season, he plans to find a wife—except she seems to find him instead. And she is nothing like he expected.

Scandal is inevitable following Edward and Amelia’s ill-conceived meeting, forcing them to marry. Amelia’s disdain for this man she hardly knows is more than clear, and Edward’s pride is wounded before their marriage has even truly begun. Yet, against all odds, the two slowly let their guard down, discovering the truth of who they married. But when Society gossip, a sister’s jealousy, and long-held secrets threaten their budding relationship, the unlikely couple must determine if their unconventional love is strong enough to withstand the opposition they face.

Emma glanced at her ringing phone, hoping it was her niece again. It wasn’t. It was her agent, Stan Morris. Her finger hovered over the red decline button. He’d want to discuss the picture and how they needed to make a statement. She hadn’t even wrapped her mind around the image in that photo. How was she supposed to explain it to anyone else?

Still, Stan was a great guy. He was always in her corner, trying to get her more promotions while working to land her a recording contract. He had faith in her, even when she didn’t have faith in herself.

She pressed the accept button and held the phone to her ear. “Hey, Stan.”

“I’ve been trying to reach you.” His voice was higher pitched than normal, and his words were rushed. “Did you see Razzled?”

“Yes.” She slouched down in her seat. She didn’t want to have this conversation.

“You’re the headline!” He sounded so happy.

“Stan, I can’t talk about it.”

“Em, I have big news.”

Was it possible he had news about her career rather than the dumpster fire otherwise known as her love life? She hoped so. She needed something positive to latch onto while she dealt with her broken heart.

She sat up a little straighter. “Good news?”

“Yes. I’ve been fielding phone calls all morning. They want you on all of the networks’ morning talk shows.”

“What?” It came out a little louder than she’d intended. “You mean like singing at Rockefeller Center?” It had been a dream all of her life.

“Well…um…not exactly.”

Her body stiffened. “What do you mean by not exactly?”

“Well, they’re interested in you and JT.”

“No!”

“Em, you have to do this.”

“No, I don’t.” Why did all of these people think she’d be anxious to cash in on her breakup—a breakup that she didn’t know about?

“Will you at least think about it?”

She knew if she said no that he’d continue trying to persuade her to do it his way. So she took the shortest route to ending this phone call. “Yes. But I’ve got to go now. We’re almost as the airport.”

After they said their goodbyes, she powered off her phone. There was no one she wanted to speak to. She was talked out.

She slouched back in her seat and flung her backpack into the empty seat next to her. As the shuttle pulled away from the hotel, she turned her face to the window. She blindly stared out as her mind replayed the events that had led to her quick engagement and JT’s subsequent betrayal.

I Can't Wait for... Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen (Can't-Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday) #CWW #WOW #yalit #yabooks #yafantasy #newbooks @DelacortePress

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you're continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well! Find out more here.

Tag me on your CWW posts on Twitter (@wishfulendings) and I'll like and retweet!

This book grabbed my attention as I've been in the mood for some new fairy tale twists. The story sounds like it'll be quite entertaining with a character who will be forced to change her ways and an enemies-to-lovers trope. It's my pick this week...

Violet Made of Thorns
(Violet Made of Thorns #1)
By Gina Chen
YA Fantasy
Hardcover, Audiobook & ebook, 368 Pages

Summary

A darkly enchanting fantasy debut about a morally gray witch, a cursed prince, and a prophecy that ignites their fate-twisted destinies—perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince and Serpent & Dove.

Violet is a prophet and a liar, influencing the royal court with her cleverly phrased—and not always true—divinations. Honesty is for suckers, like the oh-so-not charming Prince Cyrus, who plans to strip Violet of her official role once he’s crowned at the end of the summer—unless Violet does something about it.

But when the king asks her to falsely prophesy Cyrus's love story for an upcoming ball, Violet awakens a dreaded curse, one that will end in either damnation or salvation for the kingdom—all depending on the prince’s choice of future bride. Violet faces her own choice: Seize an opportunity to gain control of her own destiny, no matter the cost, or give in to the ill-fated attraction that’s growing between her and Cyrus.

Violet’s wits may protect her in the cutthroat court, but they can't change her fate. And as the boundary between hatred and love grows ever thinner with the prince, Violet must untangle a wicked web of deceit in order to save herself and the kingdom—or doom them all.

Summary

Lady Elise Henderson lives two separate lives. At home in Scotland, she’s the titled daughter of the Marquess of Roxbury, an heiress in her own right. In London, however, she’s Elise Taylor, a top MI6 operative for the “home office.” But when a devastating accident threatens to end her career, Elise is left with far too much time for self-reflection and the regret of a decision made long ago that features one man: fellow MI6 agent Harry Benson.

Harry Benson, the son of servants, has loved Elise for the better part of a decade. But life took them on separate journeys until their worlds converged once more. An immediate assignment to the Scottish Borders leaves Harry little time to make provisions for his small, rambunctious son, Sammy. Harry knows only one person he can rely on for the boy’s care—Elise. When Elise brings Sammy to her ancestral estate, she never imagines that a nemesis from her past looms in the shadows, hungry for revenge. Stalked at every turn, Elise and Harry discover that fighting their feelings for one another is futile, but can they survive long enough to get another shot at true love?

Excerpt

Harry Benson sprinted down the narrow street of clay-built homes, the sun burning overhead in the relentless blue sky. As he rounded a corner, bullets chipped the wall beside him and spattered his face with baked clay. His heart sputtered. How had he missed that guard on the rooftop? Unfamiliar with this sector of Lebatu’s capital city, Harry ducked into an alley. He spun around, searching for a way out as boots crunched on the hard-packed earth. Trapped. The hair lifted off Harry’s neck, and the faces of his son and a beautiful redhead flashed before his eyes.
