Excerpt

Emma glanced at her ringing phone, hoping it was her niece again. It wasn’t. It was her agent, Stan Morris. Her finger hovered over the red decline button. He’d want to discuss the picture and how they needed to make a statement. She hadn’t even wrapped her mind around the image in that photo. How was she supposed to explain it to anyone else?

Still, Stan was a great guy. He was always in her corner, trying to get her more promotions while working to land her a recording contract. He had faith in her, even when she didn’t have faith in herself.

She pressed the accept button and held the phone to her ear. “Hey, Stan.”

“I’ve been trying to reach you.” His voice was higher pitched than normal, and his words were rushed. “Did you see Razzled?”

“Yes.” She slouched down in her seat. She didn’t want to have this conversation.

“You’re the headline!” He sounded so happy.

“Stan, I can’t talk about it.”

“Em, I have big news.”

Was it possible he had news about her career rather than the dumpster fire otherwise known as her love life? She hoped so. She needed something positive to latch onto while she dealt with her broken heart.

She sat up a little straighter. “Good news?”

“Yes. I’ve been fielding phone calls all morning. They want you on all of the networks’ morning talk shows.”

“What?” It came out a little louder than she’d intended. “You mean like singing at Rockefeller Center?” It had been a dream all of her life.

“Well…um…not exactly.”

Her body stiffened. “What do you mean by not exactly?”

“Well, they’re interested in you and JT.”

“No!”

“Em, you have to do this.”

“No, I don’t.” Why did all of these people think she’d be anxious to cash in on her breakup—a breakup that she didn’t know about?

“Will you at least think about it?”

She knew if she said no that he’d continue trying to persuade her to do it his way. So she took the shortest route to ending this phone call. “Yes. But I’ve got to go now. We’re almost as the airport.”

After they said their goodbyes, she powered off her phone. There was no one she wanted to speak to. She was talked out.

She slouched back in her seat and flung her backpack into the empty seat next to her. As the shuttle pulled away from the hotel, she turned her face to the window. She blindly stared out as her mind replayed the events that had led to her quick engagement and JT’s subsequent betrayal.
