Summary

Two wounded heroes shattered by tragedy and paralyzed by guilt and must find their footing and work together to catch a killer.

A warrant service in the San Bernardino Mountains goes horribly wrong when an IED blast kills four police officers. Devastated by the loss of her team, the lone survivor, Long Beach sergeant Jodie King, struggles with her guilt and grief, especially as the case remains open with no clear leads or suspects. Weeks after the explosion, Jodie retires from the police department and returns to the mountain bomb site seeking peace and resolution . . . only to find herself in the crosshairs once again.

Sam Gresham just happens to be in the right place at the right time when shots are fired at Jodie. The newest detective for the county sheriff’s department, Sam is assigned to work the IED, his first case back after his own traumatic loss. While Sam sees an opportunity to help Jodie heal from her lingering scars, Jodie hopes fresh eyes will bring new insight to the investigation. Because after this latest shooting, one thing seems clear: Jodie has always been the intended target―and the threat may be much closer to her than anyone wants to admit.

Janice Cantore delivers another pulse-pounding contemporary romantic suspense novel about overcoming grief and learning to trust again.

My Review

WIN LOSE KILL DIE is a suspenseful thriller set at a private high school where the student leaders of a secret society get murdered one by one. There is suspicion from the start, with twists and turns as the main character and her friends try to figure out who the murderer is before it's too late. Definitely recommended to fans of One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson.

This story has lots of red herrings with all its twists and turns. One culprit was too obvious so I knew it wasn't her, but I wasn't completely sure which of the others it was until the end. I had an original guess but then wavered since I couldn't figure out if it was who I thought it was for sure. It's fairly rare for a story to keep me guessing until almost the end, so that was well done.

I liked the group of characters as they each had their own unique personalities. This affected how they interacted with each other and how they began figuring things out. There were some one-dimensional side characters, but the main ones were well developed. I liked the friendships and the sweet romance that were weaved through the story, but that didn't overtake it. The suspense takes center stage as it should, while there were also other things going on.

The story is somewhat violent and bloody as the murders continue. If you're a bit squeamish, this won't be for you. As more people died, characters that I had started to know better, it made me sad, so definitely some feels in this one. There's a bit of a cliffhanger at the end, which I very much appreciated. It meant this book didn't tie up in a perfectly, pretty bow, which I felt fit the story quite well.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a suspenseful thriller with some feels, likable characters, and enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing. Definitely a book to grab and an author to follow if this is your kind of read.

Content: Some mild swearing, underage drinking, innuendo and suggestive content, bloody violence.
Source: I received a complimentary copy NetGalley through TBR and Beyond Tours, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Happy Thanskgiving!

I feel like this year is going so fast! We had a bit of a change in plans this year and spent Thanksgiving dinner with some friends and will be traveling to be with family tomorrow. I can't complain about two days of yummy food. Then Saturday we'll be putting up Christmas decorations and watching college football and The Game. If you don't now what that game that is, that's okay. My team isn't part of it, but my husband's is. Go blue!

Here's my Thanksgiving owls that I only get to share once a year:

I am thankful for so much this year. I see blessings in my life on a pretty regular basis these days because my family has been in the thick of things and continues to be. I hope that whatever life is like for you, that you take a moment to find things and people to feel gratitude for.

All my blessings,

My Review

FROM AN UNKOWN SENDER is another collaboration between two authors in the Falcon Point series. This one is a contemporary romantic suspense where the romantic relationships are already established and a new threat arises that these characters face to overcome with danger to escape. Definitely a recommended read to fans of the series, authors, and clean romantic suspense.

It was so good to dive into a book with the voices of these authors who are both favorites of mine. They worked so flawlessly together that I'm still not completely sure which parts each of them wrote. I did like that regardless, each of these characters had their own voice and personality so there was no mixing anyone up. I enjoyed the friendships, familial relationships, humor, banter, and romantic aspects of this story. I also enjoyed the way the plot developed and the suspense increased in intensity as the story unfolded. Both authors are well experienced in writing this type of story and I appreciated that I didn't feel there were any holes, poor editing or underdevelopment. I also liked that the romance is already developed at the start, so you don't have that competing with the plot or the suspense. It's very present because the characters are in love, but it's weaved through instead of taking part of the main stage. If you're expecting heavier romance, that isn't present. For me that was a plus with this one. I also liked that there were a few twists and turns with a somewhat unique plot.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This is a very satisfying and entertaining read! The romance is sweet, the characters likable and the plot intriguing. This whole series is a fun and unique idea and I'm looking forward to similar series in the future.

Content: Some violence, but clean.

Summary

London, 1887

When newly graduated medical doctor Charlotte Duvall receives word that her father has died, she immediately leaves America and returns home to see to her family's estate. Among her father's possessions is a box of her late mother's letters, which feels like a balm to Charlotte's grief-stricken heart. But the letters contain some inconsistencies that suggest there was more to her mother's death than Charlotte had been told. She turns to the one man she trusts more than anyone--her treasured friend and director of London's police force, John Ellis.

John Ellis has harbored feelings for Charlotte ever since he first met her. Tucked into his heart are thoughts of her sharp mind, quick wit, and remarkable beauty. Though he has not yet found the courage to share his feelings with the young doctor, he is eager to help her in her hour of need.

Investigating the details of a death was not how Charlotte imagined she would find love, but as she and John work to unravel a dark web of secrets and lies, she finds herself relying on him more and more--and opening her heart to him in the process.

As the danger draws ever closer, John vows to do everything in his power to protect Charlotte from harm. But he fears protecting her heart might come at the cost of breaking his own.

Summary

The Human Alliance knew the war was over when the machines started using magic to cast fire, shake the ground, conjure storms, and part the seas.

We fought back anyway.

22-year-old soldier Gunnar Graves lost his faith and his family when a platoon of AI-driven war machines—led by an android fire mage— destroyed his unit. Forced to live in a machine-controlled village and hiding a dark secret, he spends his days trying to learn elemental power so he can take his revenge. After years of failure, his ability ignites when he least expects it.

On the run and hunted by the war machines, Gunnar discovers that an ancient, life-based strength has awakened to help humanity fight back. Joined by the other life mages, Gunnar is thrust into a mad world of android overlords, cyborg clans, and evil forces bent on his destruction.

To protect his newfound family, Gunnar must discover the truth behind a power he doesn’t understand and wage a war he doesn’t believe they can win.

My Review

STEAL FIRE FROM THE GODS is a book about a society surviving after a war with AI machines who harnessed elemental magic. The humans are no longer free as they once were, but now live in controlled communities. Readers will get to know several characters while they follow the main hero, Gunnar, as he lives in such a community and tries to find his own way of fighting back. There is wonderful world building, with an interesting juxtaposition between machines and magic, giving this book a very dystopian fantasy feel.

I'm always looking for new sci-fi books that spark my interest and the premise for this one sounded very intriguing. I also felt that the publisher did a fabulous job with the cover as that totally caught my eye as a sci-fi/fantasy fan. The writing, especially as a debut, was fairly well done and edited, which you don't always find and which I very much appreciated. I think there is only the potential for future books to get better, which is something I'm excited about.

I enjoyed the characters in this story. Gunnar has a lot of history to work through to be able to grasp on to his future. Lots of baggage since he was in the middle of the war and lost everything. He's not the only one. Everyone he meets has their own scars and story. It's a scarred landscape with different people trying to survive while under AI rule. I liked how there is a mix of different backgrounds and diversity with the characters. They each feel unique and have their own strengths and weaknesses. The plot is interesting and a very unique concept. There is fairly consistent danger for these characters as the story progresses and I enjoyed seeing all the twists and turns, some unpredictable, to a climatic end.

As far as flaws, there were several places where I thought the religious aspects felt forced or overly strong. I'd recommend to readers who like a stronger religious aspect in their stories. There were some places where a bit more development was needed or further explanation needed. A few places it seemed some actions or conclusions were jumped to that didn't quite resonate or work for me. I think overall the story just needed more time for development in-between each plot point.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall intriguing story in an interesting world that I am planning on visiting again.

My Review

IT'S YOUR LOVE is a story about a man who faces some of his greatest regrets coming back home for the summer, and a girl who is trying to figure out how to have her own life while still fulfilling a promise. Set in a small town that fans have grown to love, with likable characters, a sweet romance and inspirational elements woven throughout.

I really liked these characters, the premise for the story and being able to come back and visit Deep Haven. It's a summer visit revolving around a summer camp, its horses and the two main employees running things. There is an old crush between these two and that underlying attraction is still there. It was fun seeing them work through their own challenges as characters and with those around them as they face some choices. The romance is sweet and slowly builds, and friends and family who poke their hands into things in this small town add to the charm.

I think there were a few flaws for me personally in this story. I was rubbed wrong by the heroine's comments towards the hero and how that bled into their work environment from almost the start of the story. It felt pretty juvenile to hold onto something that wasn't actually what she thought from high school and hold it over someone's head. The other thing was that I felt like the wit, humor, and chemistry were lacking in this story so it felt fairly flat to me.

In the end, was it what I wished for? An overall cute story about letting go while also reaching for dreams. Likable characters and small-town life set amidst a summer camp created a charming feel to this book.

Summary

She thought she had her life back. She was wrong. A gripping debut thriller perfect for fans of Natalie D. Richards and Vincent Ralph.

It was a mistake to trust him.

Shivering and bruised, a teen wakes up on the side of a dirt road with no memory of how she got there―or who she is. A passing officer takes her to the police station, and not long after, a frantic man arrives. He's been searching for her for hours. He has her school ID, her birth certificate, and even family photos.

He is her father. Her name is Mary. Or so he says.

When Lola slammed the car door and stormed off into the night, Drew thought they just needed some time to cool off. Except Lola disappeared, and the sheriff, his friends, and the whole town are convinced Drew murdered his girlfriend. Forget proving his innocence, he needs to find her before it's too late. The longer Lola is missing, the fewer leads there are to follow…and the more danger they both are in.

My Review

SNOWBOUND ESCAPE is a page-turning romantic suspense where the underlying feeling of danger is consistent throughout and the romance ebbs and flows as it slowly builds. The inspirational elements are woven through well and are well balanced with the other aspects of the story. Readers of the genre and imprint will enjoy these characters and the story overall as it unfolds.

I've read this author before and this K-9 series is a good fit for her since the books I loved most from her included dogs. I definitely felt the characters and plot were well done. The story didn't feel overly dramatic or unbelievable. I also liked the dynamics of the main characters with the heroine being a crime scene investigator, the hero being a cop and then the added character of his K-9 partner. The feeling of danger is present from the first page until things climax and then resolve. It definitely kept me turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed the first three-fourths of this story and then thought the ending was very sweet.

My only complaints was a conversation towards the end between the villain and the heroine and her actions that followed, and then the complete halt in a relationship and then declarations that felt much too soon.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable read. It can be read on its own, but would probably be enhanced by reading the prior books in the series. It also leads to wanting to read the other books. For dog lovers and romantic suspense fans, this is a read worth considering for a quick, inspiring romantic suspense.

Summary

Home for the holidays…

Or home for good?

Once upon a time, Ben Cooper left his hometown to follow his dreams of becoming a big-city doctor. Now he’s back to run his father’s clinic and spend Christmas with his daughter, not to fall for McKenzie Price, the woman who broke his heart. But when McKenzie steps in to help Ben reconnect with his little girl, and old sparks begin to ignite, will Ben give up city life for a second chance at love?

Excerpt

Rustic copper locks the same shade as the mums outside the door stopped McKenzie’s usual greeting from reaching her lips. The blood drained from her cheeks as a man with an expensive watch stared at on her name tag. If she imagined him thinner, added gold-rimmed glasses and a generous smattering of freckles, she’d be seventeen again. And so would he.

“Ben Cooper.” She found her words as she wrestled with a confused feeling of pleasant surprise. “I go by McKenzie instead of Mac these days.”

“Well, other than that, you haven’t changed.” Ben smiled, but McKenzie’s response caught in her chest. She knew they’d meet again one day. And with his father ill, she’d recently suspected it would probably be sooner rather than later. “You still wear your hair in a ponytail,” Ben said, as if he didn’t know what else to say.

It’d been twelve years, but McKenzie knew what he was thinking despite the friendly charade. This was the same place she’d worked during high school, and the only thing new about her was she’d changed her nickname back to her full name. But the truth was, she was the same. No family. No career. Not even the little bookstore she’d always said she would own someday.

My Review

HIS CHRISTMAS COWGIRL is a fun contemporary western romance about a barrel-racing cowgirl and a horse-raising cowboy who are both chasing their dreams and find that they need each other in order to do it. The story is full of wonderful characters, banter, and a plot that tugs on the heart and leaves readers happily content. Definitely one to pick up for a light western romance that will warm the heart.

I pretty much loved this story from the start. You have a heroine who loves her horse and who has been through a lot with this steady friend. Her life hits a sudden roadblock and her friends find a way for her to move forward in aid of her dream. The meet cute that occurs next was full of sparks and humor and I knew then that this was going to be a really fun read. Of course there are some twists and turns, some character development and tough choices, plenty of banter and chemistry and a whole family and friends who make their own contributions to this happily-ever-after.

In the end, was it what I wished for? If you're looking for a sweet romance that will make you laugh and smile, with delightful characters and an enjoyable plot, this book is for you. Definitely recommended.
