I Can't Wait for... The Questmaster's Trap by Frank L. Cole & Secrets of the Looking Glass by J. Scott Savage (Can't-Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday) #CWW #WOW #middlegrade #books #fantasybooks @ShadowMountn

I don't read a lot of middle grade books, but these two authors are ones I do read. I read the first book in these series and thoroughly enjoyed them both, thus why I'm excited for book twos! Champion's Quest is a bit like playing Dungeons and Dragons with a motley kid crew against other teams, and with The Lost Wonderland Diaries it's some kids who mysteriously found themselves in Wonderland and find there are forces working to get the power they unknowingly have. Both series are just super fun and a bit quirky and I'd definitely recommend them to this age group! They're my picks this week...

Secrets of the Looking Glass
(The Lost Wonderland Diaries #2)
By J. Scott Savage
Middle Grade Fantasy
Hardcover, Audiobook & eBook, 368 Pages
September 13, 2022 by Shadow Mountain

Summary

After returning from Wonderland, Celia and Tyrus journey to the Looking-Glass World to reclaim their mirror images and stop a war between two powerful queens.

When the Bandersnatch steals one of Lewis Carroll’s lost diaries, Celia and Tyrus try to get it back, only to tumble through a magic mirror into the Looking-Glass World, a place where everything―themselves included―is divided in two. Celia’s logic and Tyrus’s imagination now belong to their mirror images, Lia and Ty.

Left without their greatest problem-solving skills, Celia and Tyrus must rely on each other as they play a massive game of chess to try to catch their mirror images. Along the way, they engage in a rhyming battle with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, seek advice from Humpty and Dumpty, and learn how to believe in the impossible from the White Queen, who remembers the future as if it were the past.

As the final battle draws near, Celia and Tyrus form an uneasy alliance with Lia and Ty to find the legendary vorpal sword―the only weapon powerful enough to stop the war. If they fail, not only will two kingdoms be destroyed, but Celia and Tyrus might never regain their stolen talents and could be trapped in the Looking-Glass World forever.

I have absolutely loved this author's last book, Miracle Creek Christmas! She switches to historical in her upcoming release and I'm very curious to see how that goes, but feel her writing is up to the challenge. It's my pick this week...

Hearts of Briarwall
(A Proper Romance Edwardian)
By Krista Jensen
Adult Historical Romance
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 288 Pages
August 2, 2022 by Shadow Mountain

Summary

"Intriguing discussions about how women's rights dovetail with their personal desires. An entertaining historical romance." ―Foreword Reviews

A TURN OF THE CENTURY ROMANCE

Lydia Wooding is fascinated by the latest inventions the new century brings, including motorcars. She longs for the independence they represent and believes that women should have a say in the future of the industry―just as they should have a say in suffrage, adventure, and, of course, love.

Spencer Hayes is a man of practicality and innovation, but he lacks the financial backing to make his dream a reality. When he contacts his childhood friend, Andrew Wooding, about a promising business venture, he is invited to Briarwall Manor to discuss the terms. Once there, he is surprised to find that Andrew's once shy, younger sister, Lydia, has grown into a young woman of beauty, wit, and a bit of fire. Even better, the two share a passion for motorcars.

Andrew, however, is wary of cars, having lost his parents in a tragic auto accident when he and Lydia were young. And he's not sure a relationship between his sister and Spencer is the best idea―not when Sir Lawrence is available and could match both Lydia's social status and her fortune.

Torn between risking their hearts and being loyal to their dreams in an era of whirlwind change, Spencer and Lydia anchor themselves with the determination they both share: to live life to its fullest.

Guest Post
The Inspiration for Code of Courage
By Janice Cantore

Code of Courage is the book I’ve wanted to write since the beginning of my writing career. The Rodney King riots in 1992 so upended my perceptions about policing, politics, news media, and brutality that I felt I needed to write it down. I tried, but I was never able to get my thoughts down on paper the way I wanted to.

And those riots were not the first I had witnessed. I’d experienced my first riot a few years earlier, when I was still in training and following my training officer around like a puppy. Fender’s Ballroom was a notorious nightclub in downtown Long Beach. Notorious because whenever they hosted a large event, there were problems. One night I was dispatched to Fender’s during a punk rock concert. The place was overcrowded and the fire department barred additional fans from entering, but they refused to leave. When I arrived, a sea of maybe 300 punk rock enthusiasts filled the street.

Ignoring warnings to disperse, the crowd became an unlawful assembly. What made it a riot came next. We moved in to disperse the crowd. The punk rockers were having none of it. In the blink of an eye, with what seemed like one mind, the crowd turned from us and began running down the middle of the street, breaking windows in cars and shops, and throwing anything that was not nailed down—bottles, cans, newspaper racks. Raised to respect authority, I’d never been so close to such chaos before. A few people were arrested, the ones we could catch, but most eventually made it to their cars and out of the city, leaving a huge mess along a three-block-square area.

Little did I know at the time how tame that “riot” was. I was on duty when the 1992 rioting started in Long Beach, and there was nothing that could have prepared me for that night. I’d watched for weeks while the media played the beating video over and over, stoking anger throughout the community. When the verdict came down and the rioting started, the crowds were confrontational, violent, angry. And the police were so outnumbered. I remember facing off a crowd of about 300 with only 10 or 12 other officers. Once it got dark, there was a point where we split up, and four of us were in the middle of the street trying to prevent a crowd of 100 or more from looting a grocery store. My partner turned to me and said, “Someone could be out there with a gun pointed at us, and we’d never see it.”

Thankfully the crowd was more interested in looting than in hurting us. The fact that we were so outnumbered meant that we couldn’t protect the city. There were not enough of us to go around. Businesses were burned, livelihoods lost; Long Beach had one riot-related homicide. I remember thinking that nothing at all was accomplished by the riots except the injury of innocent people.

Then came the riots of in the summer of 2020. Long out of uniform now, I watched in sadness and anger at how much more violent these riots were. Again, news media played a huge role in stoking the anger, even to the point of distorting events and reporting flat-out lies. Looting was certainly prevalent, but the rioters were also out to hurt people, specifically police officers. And for the most part, the police were restrained from doing any sort of enforcement or containment. I could only shake my head in frustration. Finally, I was able to write the book I’d wanted to write so many years ago.

Fictional cop Danni Grace sees violence start because of a lie. Injured in a riot, she almost quits and leaves law enforcement because of the chaos. She changes her mind when she remembers why she entered law enforcement in the first place: to help people and serve her community. She and her coworkers battle to get the truth out, not only for the police force, but for the innocent civilians who are being victimized.

Code of Courage was born out of my desire to show the other side, the side that gets hurt by the violence of rioting. Whatever legitimate grievance spawned the protest gets lost in the violence, and often, the innocent pay the price. The police are not the enemy. Lawbreakers are. By and large, people become police officers to serve the communities they live in. That’s why I signed up. Riots only hurt the innocent; they solve nothing.

My Review

SHADOW OF HONOR is another edge-of-your-seat book in this series. Full of complex characters and an ongoing battle on multiple fronts between different people on multiple planets keeps the pages turning from beginning to end. A series that is highly recommended for sci-fi and space opera fans!

Even though this book is around 500 pages it reads faster than that as there are no slow, dragging sections. There is a constant sense of suspense, mystery or danger (and sometimes all three). The characters are constantly facing challenges and adapting as they go, which also provides the reader with a lot of character insight and development. There are new peoples and planets explored in this third installment with things constantly shifting. The author keeps readers guessing as to who to trust and what will happen next. There are plenty of surprises and an ever evolving plot leading to a bit of a cliffhanger ending.

I loved reading this! I have learned to love these characters and enjoyed cheering them on as they faced even harder challenges, risks and dangers. There were also some really cool characters and places that were new in this third book. The world-building was excellent as well. The author always does an amazing job in writing the action scenes and those won't disappoint in this book. I'm literally dying to read the next installment.

My only criticism would be that I would have appreciated more of a recap woven through at the beginning since it took me a bit to remember what had happened in the last book and who everyone was.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a fast-paced read full of wonderful characters, an amazing world and an intriguing plot. Definitely a series to pick up and one I'll be continuing. Book four can't come soon enough!

Content: Some innuendo, violence, references to marital relations.
Source: I received a complimentary copy from through Celebrate Lit (but also bought my own copy), which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Excerpt from Shadow of Honor

Shaken, Eija touched her temple, head still pounding from the oxygen deprivation she’d suffered beneath the beast’s attempt to crush the life from her—that and the minutes stuck in an oxygen-deprived pod. Until she figured out what had prompted the creature to release her and crouch before her, she didn’t dare move.

Insane! The docuvids of the Lavabeasts had not exaggerated. These monsters were fast, lethal, vicious. Yet . . . twice she’d been in its grip, and it’d held back from actually turning her into a dusty pile. Why?

Yeah, maybe don’t ask. Just . . .

What? What could she do against beasts that reduced people to ash with their arms?

Keening filled the ship. With bewildering speed, the other three Draegis bolted out of the bay, their thudding steps fading down the passage as they headed to the aft port, where their ship clung to the Prevenire like a remora on a shark.

Nerves thrumming, Eija glanced at Marco, whose chin was tucked to his chest again. Unconscious? Twitches of his head and hands alleviated that fear. Probably super focused on piloting the ship to the Sentinel.

So we can all die.

Right. So much for the relief she’d felt. Her gaze slid down to the immobilized Lavabeast at her feet. What was wrong with it—him? Was he more AI than biological? Had he powered down or something? Fried his neural net? What was she supposed to do?

She discarded each question as it arose. Assessed her precarious situation. The crackling and swelling of his strange skin said he was still breathing. So alive, not dead.

I can help with that.

He was also awake—glowing eye slits proved that.

Reef shifted on the deck where he’d landed after being tossed by one of the monsters, his arm hanging at an odd angle. Gray eyes came to hers, asking what neither of them could actually voice—What just happened? Why had the other Lavabeasts fled? Why had this one not killed her or left?

“Why isn’t it moving?” Reef hissed as he slowly climbed to his feet.
She shook her head, still terrified of arousing the beast’s anger.
Locked on the Draegis, Reef inched closer and angled toward her.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. Sure.” Again, she again checked on Marco, who still had his head down. Maybe the other Draegis had done something to him. “Marco?” she called quietly at the same time she heard Reef suck in a breath.

In front of her, the mountain of lava erupted with a piercing howl, terrorizing her as it lunged. Like a lightning strike—a very large, fat, black bolt—it shot forward.

Adult Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook

Summary

She wins at everything—even capturing his heart.

Philip Townsend is too busy trying to render his estate profitable to worry about managing its rundown household, much less find a wife to comfort and adore him during his secretly lonely nights. His beautiful and competent neighbor Honoria should be the logical choice were it not for the perennial competition between them that bodes little peace.

Honoria Bassett takes pride in a household well run. And until her brother is ready to settle down and marry, that is precisely what she is doing on their family’s small estate. She refuses to allow herself to dwell on her frustrating neighbor Philip who always shows up when it is most inconvenient. She is certainly ignoring the firm set of his lips, especially when quirked upward in a grin that does strange things to her heart.

When challenges on their individual estates arise, Philip and Honoria turn to one another for advice and guidance. Now in constant company, feelings for one another arise that threaten their determination to remain friends. As the threads of love and logic become increasingly hard to separate, they must decide if they belong together because it’s convenient—or because it’s destiny.

Author Interview

How do you expect Code of Courage to resonate with your readers? What are you most excited for your readers to experience through reading this novel?

This story is pulled from today’s headlines. Many people have probably experienced antipolice protests in their cities, or they’ve seen them on TV. I hope to show what it looks like through the eyes of the uniformed officers on the front lines.

Tell us about your ideal reader. Who did you write Code of Courage for?

Anyone who enjoys suspense novels with police officers as the main characters.

Code of Courage delves into serious, complicated issues like protests, police involved shootings, varied public opinions about law enforcement personnel, and mental health challenges faced by first responders. Can you share some of the real-life experience and research that went into crafting the plot of this novel?

I was in uniform during the Rodney King riots, so I experienced firsthand what trying to control a riot feels like. It’s like trying to contain water in a sieve, only more dangerous. I remember being in a group of five or six officers facing off at least three hundred angry people. Bottles were thrown, violence threatened, yet back then the mob’s objective for the most part was simply looting. They wanted to get past us to the stores and businesses. The riots I watched recently were much scarier. The crowds wanted to hurt officers and destroy property. It made the officers’ jobs so much harder and more dangerous. During the King riots, we worked 12-hours shifts and it was hard on everyone. I was physically and mentally exhausted. When I saw the recent riots, my heart went out to all those officers. It was like what I went through, on steroids.

What lessons does Code of Courage teach about justice, community, and accountability within government organizations?

Accountability is important in all walks of life—politics, policing, teaching, journalism, etc. When the public perceives that no one is held accountable in a particular institution, then they lose faith and trust in that institution.

Which of the characters in Code of Courage was the most challenging for you to create? Which character developed the most naturally for you?

Danni was the most natural. I remembered what it was like being in the riots. Those moments in my life are why I’m a writer today. It was a life-changing incident for me, and afterwards I wanted to write it down, attempt to convey to people what it was like to be there.
The villain was the hardest for me. I don’t understand people who want to defund the police. It’s easy for me to say, “Only criminals want to see police defunded,” but I realize the issue is more complex than that.

Does faith play a role in the story?

Yes. Danni’s faith is tested by what happens to her. It causes a reevaluation: What is most important in life? What provides the drive to keep going, even when things are difficult and painful? For me it’s faith, and the importance of God and faith will always play a role in my stories. Also, Gabe sees the importance of faith in Danni’s life. It causes him to evaluate his own faith, or lack thereof.

What is one thing you wish more people understood about working in law enforcement?

Police officers are human beings. None of them can ever be perfect. By and large, most people become officers because they want to help, they want a safe community. And for every incident that goes wrong and is widely covered in the news, there are thousands that go right that most people never hear about.

Can you tell us a bit about any upcoming projects you’re working on, now that you’re releasing Code of Courage?

Yes, I’m working on another novel, with two officers who have suffered trauma in their working lives. Jodie and Sam have been shattered in different ways, and they face different faith battles. When Jodie’s life is threatened, Sam steps in and saves her. But that act endangers his life as well, and they are both thrown into the race to find a killer before he strikes again.

Happy 4th!

I just wanted to wish everyone a happy Independence Day here in the USA! We're spending time with family right now on vacation. We don't always get to spend the holiday with family and I'm grateful, especially this year, to get to do that after COVID making it years since we've seen them. Hopefully you're catching some fireworks and enjoying good company as well. I'm very grateful for my freedom, for those who have died fighting for it and those who continue to fight for it.
