I know this releases tomorrow and today for most of you. I somehow missed it and it's from a favorite author so I just wanted to give it some love. It's based on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which is an old favorite movie/musical and one the family has gotten plenty of laughs from, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the author spins it into a modern tale. It's my pick this week...

Brides & Brothers
By Anneka R. Walker
Adult Contemporary Romance, Retelling
Paperback & ebook, 270 Pages
September 1, 2021 by Covenant Communications

A modern retelling of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Camille Kelly is in real danger of becoming an old maid—at least by Cherish, Montana, standards. She has all but given up on finding Mr. Right—until her broken laptop leads her to Aiden Peterson, a tall, dark, and handsome computer genius. Camille would never have believed her magic moment was right around the corner, but after two whirlwind weeks, she has a ring on her finger and has happily ever after in sight. However, she soon discovers Aiden is part of a daunting package deal . . .

As the eldest of seven brothers, Aiden has never had a problem living under the same roof as his rambunctious siblings. When he falls for Camille, he is confident she’ll fit right into his family’s already bursting home. He thought wrong. Aiden and Camille’s storybook romance comes to a screeching halt when she discovers her new living situation. Not willing to submit to a life mothering a bunch of grown men, Camille has only one option: she embarks on a campaign to improve her new brothers-in-law and marry them off. And what better candidates for wives than her own best friends?

Husband Auditions
By Angela Ruth Strong
Christian Contemporary Romantic Comedy
Paperback & ebook, 272 Pages
August 17, 2021 by Kregel Publications

How far would you go to find the perfect husband? All the way back to the 1950s?

In a world full of happily-ever-after love, Meri Newberg feels like the last young woman on the planet to be single, at least in her Christian friend group. So when she's handed a strange present at the latest wedding--a 1950s magazine article of "ways to get a husband"--she decides there's nothing to lose by trying out its advice. After all, she can't get any more single, can she?

Her brother's roommate sees the whole thing as a great opportunity. Not to fall in love--Kai Kamaka has no interest in the effort a serious relationship takes. No, this is a career jump start. He talks Meri into letting him film every silly husband-catching attempt for a new online show. If it goes viral, his career as a cameraman will be made.

When Meri Me debuts, it's an instant hit. People love watching her lasso men on street corners, drop handkerchiefs for unsuspecting potential beaus, and otherwise embarrass herself in pursuit of true love. But the longer this game goes on, the less sure Kai is that he wants Meri to snag anyone but him. The only problem is that he may not be the kind of husband material she's looking for . . .

With droll comic timing, unbeatable chemistry, and a zany but relatable cast of characters, Angela Ruth Strong has created a heartfelt look at the reality of modern Christian dating that readers will both resonate with and fall for.

My Review

HUSBAND AUDITIONS is a bit of an emotional roller-coaster of romantic comedy. The story mixes meaningful messages about happiness, faith and the struggles of marriage and finding the right one, with humor and friendship as these characters take on the challenge of filming a YouTube show based on a 1950s' list on how to catch a guy. Christian contemporary romance fans will find much to love in this story.

From the start this story was a lot of fun! Meri and Kai both use lots of sarcasm in their humor and the whole YouTube show was basically mocking the practice of women trying to get men, so there was a constant humorous feel to the story. Meri and Kai had an instant connection and chemistry which definitely made the story quite entertaining. I liked both of them, although I liked Kai more. There was also an overprotective brother from a distance as he's out of the country, a quirky roommate, a best-friend and co-worker, and some other family members who each had their own bits of story to play. The religious aspect is light through the story except in a few places and towards the end. Some may have issues theologically, but otherwise I thought it was well done. I also thought the author did a really good job of mixing the lighter, more entertaining moments (including the romance) with some heavier topics. The story definitely pulled on all my emotions between laughing at the characters' antics, feeling a bit like swooning during a few scenes, and feeling heartbroken for some of the situations.

I only had a few complaints with the story. My biggest was the way Meri treated Kai and how judgmental she was in places. There was one point in the story where she actually made me a bit mad and I didn't really like her. She's even hurtful in a few places directly to Kai, but there's no consequences. It's like Kai and the author just gloss right over it all except for Kai once saying to himself that it hurt. She also was rather unlikable when she was being a poor friend when her best friend got married and later on. My other complaint is that I would have liked an epilogue to see how things go and how these two grew in the end, although I also understand why the story ended as it did.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable read. It was heartfelt, with relatable characters and a story that most readers can relate to and will leave them with a smile in the end.

I don't read dark stories or horror too often, although I do read YA fantasy. I'm a huge fan of Gothic romances, particularly Jane Eyre and this happens to be a twist on that story. In the author's words from Goodreads: "Was watching 2011 Jane Eyre and thought 'Why isn't this house literally haunted?'." Totally sounds like something intriguing and that I'll love. 🤞 It's my pick this week...

"An intricate magic system, a grimly humorous Black heroine, AND a heart-thumping romance? This book leaves nothing wanting." - Jordan Ifueko, New York Times bestselling author of Raybearer

Andromeda is a debtera—an exorcist hired to cleanse households of the Evil Eye. She would be hired, that is, if her mentor hadn’t thrown her out before she could earn her license. Now her only hope of steady work is to find a Patron—a rich, well-connected individual who will vouch for her abilities.

When a handsome young heir named Magnus Rorschach reaches out to hire her, she takes the job without question. Never mind that he’s rude and demanding and eccentric, that the contract comes with a number of outlandish rules… and that almost a dozen debtera had quit before her. If Andromeda wants to earn a living, she has no choice.

But she quickly realizes this is a job like no other, with horrifying manifestations at every turn, and that Magnus is hiding far more than she has been trained for. Death is the most likely outcome if she stays, the reason every debtera before her quit. But leaving Magnus to live out his curse alone isn’t an option because—heaven help her—she’s fallen for him.

Stunningly romantic, Lauren Blackwood's heartstopping debut, Within These Wicked Walls, ushers in an exciting new fantasy voice.

"Fierce, eerie and heartfelt... a romantic and spine-chilling reimagining of a classic. I loved every creepy, swoon-worthy moment of it." - Laura E. Weymouth, author of The Light Between Worlds

The Merchant and the Rogue
 A Proper Romance Victorian
(The Dread Penny Society #3)
By Sarah M. Eden
Adult Historical Romance, Historical Romance, Mystery/Suspense, Inspirational Fiction
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 368 Pages
August 17, 2021 by Shadow Mountain

London, 1865

Vera Sorokina loves reading the Penny Dreadfuls and immersing herself in tales of adventure, mystery, and romance. Her own days are filled with the often mundane work of running the book and print shop she owns with her father. The shop offers her the freedom and income to employ and protect the poverty-stricken Londoners she's come to care about, and it gives her father something to do other than long for their hometown of St. Petersburg. She is grateful for the stability in their lives, but she often feels lonely.

Brogan Donnelly was born and raised in Ireland, but has lived in London for several years, where he's built a career as a Penny Dreadful writer. He has dedicated himself to the plight of the poor with the help of his sister. His membership in the secretive Dread Penny Society allows him to feel he isn't entirely wasting his life, yet he feels dissatisfied. With no one to share his life with but his sister, he fears London will never truly feel like home.

Brogan and Vera's paths cross, and the attraction is both immediate and ill-advised. Vera knows from past experience that writers are never to be trusted, and Brogan has reason to suspect not everything at her print shop is aboveboard. When the growing criminal enterprise run by the elusive and violent Mastiff begins targeting their area of London, Brogan and Vera must work together to protect the community they've both grown to love. But that means they'll need to learn to trust each other with dangerous secrets that have followed both of them from their home countries.

My Review

THE MERCHANT AND THE ROGUE is one of those books that includes all the things cozy historical romantic mystery fans love: great characters, an engaging plot, mysterious undertones, a few twists and turns and sweet romance. There is also a bit of the unusual and fantastical in the Penny Dreadful stories (yes, two!) that adds a bit of Gothic feel to the story. Highly recommended to fans of the author, series and genre!

I loved the first book in this series, and it is still an all-time favorite book, but this third book comes in a close second. I loved the main characters, the plot, the romance, the mystery... but I also loved the two additional Penny Dreadful stories and how all three magically worked together to bring a book that was an absolute delight to read!

Both Brogan and Vera have secrets... pasts they have moved on from. They also have lives that are at the whim of family and the class of society they belong to. As part of the working class, they live among those who are less fortunate, witness crime and have their own hopes and dreams for a future of their own. The whole group who make up the Dread Penny Society mostly fall into this class and it lends a different feel to this series compared to many others. The story moves at a steady pace while the suspense slowly grows. There is a plot to disrupt and danger to face, all while friendships and love are on the line.

I've started reading The Dead Zoo (the first Penny Dreadful story included in the book) to my kids (ages 9 to 17) as I think they'll find it quite intriguing as well as humorous. The style reminds me a bit of a classic mystery, like a lighter Sherlock Holmes, which is one of the best compliments I can give it. The second Penny Dreadful story is call The Merchant and the Rogue (the book title is always the same as one of the short serial stories included), and it is also quite intriguing. I'll be reading that one to the kids as well.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This is a truly entertaining and delightful book! It's definitely recommended reading if you enjoy likable and complex characters, mystery, romance, and two additional short stories that enhance the main one. Readers will thoroughly enjoy it and then eagerly await the next installment in this series!

A terrible tragedy nearly broke him. Can love put him back together again?

Widowed history teacher Neil Hamilton has lost his way—at work, with people and even with his faith. But Neil's shut-down existence is disrupted when a small toddler and his would-be foster mother, vibrantly pretty Maggie Byrne, come crashing into Neil's yard and his life. Can this absentminded teacher find himself again…and take a chance on love, too?

From Love Inspired: Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.

People had hurt this woman, Neil realized, and she still bore the scars, no matter how well she covered them up with cookies and smiles. “Did something like that happen to you?”

He sensed her reluctance to answer his question. “Almost. If it hadn’t been for Ruby—” Maggie paused and swallowed. “It almost happened to me. And I knew other kids in the foster-care system who weren’t as blessed as I was. Their stories didn’t end well. How could they? If you shut your heart off, if you can’t love people because you’re terrified of getting hurt again, what kind of life is that?”

He could have told her. He knew exactly what kind of life that was. But she didn’t seem to expect an answer so he didn’t offer one.

“I won’t let that happen to Oliver,” she said fiercely, “but I’m going to need your help. And who knows? Maybe it’ll help you, too....”

That was his cue. Time to refuse politely, to back away from this, and retreat into the closed-off lifestyle that kept him reasonable functional.

He suddenly recalled that moment when Oliver had run to him instead of to her—and how he’d wished he could help her.

Well, now he could. She needed him. Nobody had needed him for a very long time.

“All right,” he heard himself saying. “I’ll try. Just tell me what I’m supposed to do.”

Aspen Crossroads

Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 352 Pages
August 24, 2021 by Berkley Mass Market

Contemporary romance author Janine Rosche delivers an inspirational tale about overcoming strife and opening your heart to love with ASPEN CROSSROADS (Berkley Mass Market; August 24, 2021).

Haven Haviland has made it her life’s mission to help the people of her small community, until one mistakes costs her the beloved counseling practice that was once a haven for her patients. Trusting men has gotten her into trouble before, but in order to gain the forgiveness she so desperately craves, she must trust her heart—and her regrets—to a mysterious newcomer with his own rocky past.

Few in the community of Whisper Canyon have actually met Jace Daring, the handsome recluse who lives at Aspen Crossroads, the farm at the edge of town. That doesn’t stop the rumors about the small farm and the multiple women who live with him. He must protect the truth—that the farm-to-table restaurant he plans to open will provide new livelihoods for women rescued from human trafficking. Jace vowed he would never reside in Whisper Canyon and hopes to move on to his next assignment soon, but he needs a partner he can trust to mentor the women in his stead. It just so happens that he has recently met a counselor in need of work. What better way for Haven to right her wrongs than to mentor women looking to rebuild their lives?

When the mayor’s campaign to clean up Whisper Canyon threatens Aspen Crossroads, dangers from the women’s pasts resurface and Haven’s mistakes are exposed to the town. Jace would do anything to save Haven and the women in his care, but it turns out they aren’t the only ones in need of saving.

“Excuse me, miss. I have a question for you. Are you planning to buy that Ameraucana?”

Instinctively, Haven drew the chick close, holding her against her chest. The other chicks now peeked out of a cardboard box, their heads bopping about in time with their chirps. Beyond the box, a pair of legs donning work boots and jeans rose vertically until the light over the baby pool washed out the rest.

“Because if you aren’t, I’d like to.” The voice was masculine enough to stir up a few flutters in

her belly. Then the owner of the voice bent down into a crouch. The light caught the striking lines of his face. A strong jaw and straight nose played against the tuft of sandy hair peeking out from his backward baseball cap, creating a playful combo of boyish and manly. He wasn’t from around here. Haven would remember him.

“I . . .” Haven started, peering down at the chick in her hands. “I hadn’t thought about it.” She had no coop. She had no house, either. At least not one of her own. With all Dad had going on, the last thing he needed to worry about was a pet chicken. “I guess not.”

The cute guy watched her for a long moment. If he was in a rush, he wasn’t showing it. The chick wiggled against her palms.

“She has an injured foot.”

His brow furrowed, and his lips dipped into a frown. He rose, then stepped around the pool to join Haven. When she stood, the man towered a good half foot above her. For some reason, she thought of the hickory armoire in her childhood bedroom at her dad’s house. “It’s sturdy,” Dad had said the day he gifted it to her. Now as she stood in a darkened tent with this handsome stranger, all she could think about was that dumb piece of furniture.

“What?” he asked.

“Um, the chick. I don’t know how sturdy she’ll be as she grows.” Haven opened her hands to give him a view of the animal.

Yet the man waited two feet away. “May I?”

It took a second for Haven to realize what he wanted permission for. A gentleman? Now she was sure he wasn’t from Whisper Canyon. Haven gave a quick nod, and he moved in to inspect the chick. He allowed the warped toes to wrap his fingertip. He was gentle as he thumbed the tiny bones and talons. With his other hand, he stroked the chick’s head. With each movement, he brushed Haven’s hand, forcing her to train her thoughts on the animal— not the man whose ocean- clean scent threatened to buckle her knees.

No wedding ring. So much for training those thoughts. But she’d learned that was the most attractive trait a man could exhibit. Well, that and a habit of honesty, which was rare these days.

“I can try to splint those.” His voice dove to a deep, lulling timbre. Was he trying to soothe the bird? Or her? “Hopefully, it’s only cosmetic. If so, she’ll still be plenty useful to me.”

Haven closed her hands and twisted away from him.

“Are you planning to eat her?” His smile cracked. “Ameraucanas aren’t meat birds. But I do plan to eat her eggs. Is that all right with you?”

The panic eased out on a breath. “I suppose.”

He held out his hands. They were calloused but clean, and Haven liked the look of them. Sturdy.

Again, with that word. Haven placed the chick in his hands, his rough skin catching slightly on hers. Following her father’s advice, she looked the man straight in the eye to let him know she could hold her own. Not that the guidance had worked for her so far. Here she was, unemployed with no job prospects, covered in salmonella, and debating custody arrangements for a chicken.

“Thanks, miss. I’ll take good care of her.”

His forehead wrinkled. “Thanks, Audrey.”

“No, I’m not Audrey. The chick is Audrey. Hepburn.” Confusion turned to amusement. “How about Audrey Henburn?” His eyes pierced hers. She couldn’t tell their color in this light, but they crinkled at the corners and warmed her straight through. An image of the two of them sitting beneath a tree as the chicks hopped around their legs appeared in her head, but she quickly dismissed it. Her judgment, or lack thereof, was troublesome these days. A man, especially one like this, was the last thing she needed.

T. Rexes Can't Tie Their Shoes
By Anna Lazowski
Illustrated by Steph Laberis
Children's Picture Book
Hardcover & ebook, 40 Pages
June 2021 by Double Day Books For Young Readers

A funny and encouraging alphabetic book about all the things animals CAN’T do but kids CAN! Every parent teaching their children new skills will be happy to have this super-positive picture book on hand.

Bees can’t ride bicycles, penguins can’t play ping-pong, and zebras can’t go zip-lining. No one is good at everything, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying! Here is a funny and encouraging picture book for any child learning how to tie their shoes, ride a bike, spell their name, or do a variety of new things.

Follow a hilarious alphabet of animals, and see all the things they can’t do but kids can—from doing gymnastics to flipping pancakes to playing a xylophone. Along the way, young readers will learn that it’s okay if they can’t do everything; they can still have a LOT of fun trying.

My Review

T. REXES CAN'T TIE THEIR SHOES is a smartly written and fantastically illustrated picture book for children that takes readers through the alphabet while different animals try to do impossible things. The result is a story that will bring smiles and laughter to children's faces, as well as their parents, as they journey through this book. Highly recommended!

This book starts off with: "If you're still a bit small, it is no fun at all when you can't reach a shelf or get dressed by yourself... Some things are hard—for animals too!" What proceeds is an alphabet of animals all trying to do hard or impossible things, colorfully illustrated with simple one-sentence descriptions. It is such a witty and adorable book perfect for young children, but a book that any age can enjoy. Picking the t-rex to be on the cover was perfect as I know with my kids they were always drawn to anything with dinosaurs. The author did a great job with the wording and the illustrator easily grabs readers and holds their interest with the illustrations. I also loved the list at the end of things animals can do. Just a bit of inspiration and encouragement for little ones.

In the end, was it what I wished for? A truly delightful picture book perfect for children and all ages. This is one book that will not be leaving our shelves with years of enjoyment to come.

‘We’d heard stories about the nurses in tent seven. A secret mission, stolen money, and spies…’

In 1944, four American nurses disappeared for five days. No one knew what happened to them. Until now.

When Kit and Red set foot on French soil during the Normandy landings, they know they have to rely on each other. As they head for the battlefield, their aim is simple: save lives. But when they’re called away on a top-secret mission to patch up a few men behind enemy lines, everything changes.

Alongside fellow nurses, Roxy and Gail, they’re told to prepare for the worst, trading in their nurses’ fatigues for civilian clothes and hiding medical supplies under their skirts. But it’s a lie. Their real mission tasks them with the impossible – to infiltrate the Reich and steal something the Nazis desperately need to win their losing war.

In an ultimate test of courage and comradeship, each woman must decide what she is prepared to risk and what she has to live for.

I love the whole premise behind this suspenseful story written by multiple authors that revolves around a family. These authors are all fabulous, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they pull it off. It's my pick this week...

In the early days of World War II, the Lang family lost everything. Eighty years later, it’s time to take it back.

Leopold makes his choice—but too late. His family is ripped apart, never to be reunited. But decades later, fate brings together the descendants of this broken dynasty in the place where it all began—Falcon Point.

Anna, Cole, and Tess have never met, each relying on fractured pieces of information to understand their Austrian heritage. But when unforeseen opportunities draw these Lang cousins to Falcon Point, they soon discover they are not alone in their quest to claim the coveted property and the fabled treasure hidden within. The Bookseller's Secret:
A Novel of Nancy Mitford and WWII
By Michelle Gable
Adult Historical Fiction, Time-Slip
Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 400 Pages
August 17, 2021 by Graydon House

From New York Times bestselling author Michelle Gable comes a dual-narrative set at the famed Heywood Hill Bookshop in London about a struggling American writer on the hunt for a rumored lost manuscript written by the iconic Nancy Mitford—bookseller, spy, author, and aristocrat—during World War II.

In 1942, London, Nancy Mitford is worried about more than air raids and German spies. Still recovering from a devastating loss, the once sparkling Bright Young Thing is estranged from her husband, her allowance has been cut, and she’s given up her writing career. On top of this, her five beautiful but infamous sisters continue making headlines with their controversial politics.

Eager for distraction and desperate for income, Nancy jumps at the chance to manage the Heywood Hill bookshop while the owner is away at war. Between the shop’s brisk business and the literary salons she hosts for her eccentric friends, Nancy’s life seems on the upswing. But when a mysterious French officer insists that she has a story to tell, Nancy must decide if picking up the pen again and revealing all is worth the price she might be forced to pay.

Eighty years later, Heywood Hill is abuzz with the hunt for a lost wartime manuscript written by Nancy Mitford. For one woman desperately in need of a change, the search will reveal not only a new side to Nancy, but an even more surprising link between the past and present…

Author Interview

Q: What's the "story behind the story" for The Bookseller’s Secret? Why did you decide to write this book?

A: I’ve been a longtime fan of Nancy Mitford’s work and became obsessed with the entire Mitford clan after reading The Sisters by Mary S. Lovell, about twenty years ago. In short, Nancy was one of six beautiful sisters with very distinct (and controversial!) personas: Nancy the novelist, Pamela the countrywoman, Diana the Fascist (and “most hated woman in England”), Unity the Hitler confidante, Jessica the Communist, and Deborah the Duchess. Writing something about this crew has been in the back of my mind since long before I was published and when tossing around ideas, my agent brought up Nancy’s time at the Heywood Hill bookshop during the Blitz. I love London, and any novel set in a bookstore, as well as new takes on the World War II genre, so I was game.

As for the modern storyline, though Katie’s life is vastly different from mine, let’s just say we share some of the same writerly angst!

Q: What message do you hope readers take from the story?

A: I never write with a message in mind, I just hope something about the story sticks with readers, whether it’s a character, some piece of history learned, or a new way of looking at a situation. I’m shocked how few Americans know about Nancy Mitford (even fellow writers) so I do hope readers walk away with an appreciation for her brilliance (and humor!).

Q: Do you have any specific writing rituals (favorite shirt, pen, drink, etc)?

A: I don’t! Sometimes I handwrite, sometimes I write on a computer. Sometimes I have coffee, or water, or Diet Coke. Usually I work in my home office but have been known to write during my daughters’ softball games. I started this book in February 2020 so most of it was written when EVERYONE was home on lockdown. One of my daughters took over my office so I spent a lot of time writing in my bedroom, with the dog curled up next to me. This is when I learned my husband uses binders for work (click-click-click).

One “habit” that is consistent is that I always stop in the middle of something that is going well so it’s easier to pick up the next day. Few things are more daunting than staring at a blank page!

Q: Which character do you relate to the most?

A: I relate to Katie’s writerly angst, but I really connected to Nancy Mitford’s writing style. I’d like to think we have similar senses of humor but that is giving myself a lot of credit!

Q: What can you tell us about your next project?

A: Though I vowed no more WWII novels, I couldn’t help myself! This one takes place in Rome, near the end of the war, and centers on women who created propaganda to feed to the Germans, the goal to lower morale. It’s an exploration of how misinformation not only affects those receiving it, but those creating it.

Q: What do you think drives authors to continue to find stories to tell set around WWII?

A: I think because there are endless stories to tell! It involves most every country, even so called “neutral” countries, and people from literally every walk of life. Brave and scared. Rich and poor. Powerful and powerless. Obedient and rebellious. Every combination of the human experience!

Q: How are you hoping readers will relate to this story?

A: I don’t have any specific hopes, just that they do! And, of course, I want everyone to gain a new appreciation for Nancy Mitford.

Q: What’s something that you connected with personally as you researched and wrote this story?

A: While she was working at Heywood Hill, Nancy was struggling with ideas for her fifth book just as I had been with my fifth book when my agent suggested writing about her! Also, her husband and mine look exactly alike which is a little creepy. You don’t see a lot of tall, blonde, adult men. And Nancy Mitford died exactly one year to the day before I was born, which also felt like it meant something.
