Author Interview

What inspired you to write Don't Start Now?

They say write about what you know and having worked in several newsrooms as a journalist before writing fiction, the idea of sharing a little bit of the newsroom experience with readers appealed to me. I also had the pleasure of going on media trips with Disney Cruises and Beaches Resorts in Turks & Caicos, so I also drew upon those work experiences. Now that I had the setting and career in mind, I dreamt up a love story. I kept going back to the idea of competing journalists, Adam & Eve, who have secret crushes on one another, but aren’t allowed to explore their feelings in their everyday workplace environment. So, I decided to shake things up for these two and take them away on a cruise where they have to work together on a travel piece. That’s when forced proximity, a few friendly bets, tropical drinks, dancing and a small cabin come into play. Throw in an Ex to stir things up too and you’ve got Don’t Start Now.

Why the title Don’t Start Now?

I like to base my books on song titles and thought Dua Lipa’s song “Don’t Start Now,” fit this sassy and lighthearted storyline perfectly. After all, Eve is moving on with her life after breaking up with her fiancé, but now months later he has decided to pop back into her life and try to win her back, but sadly for him she is already dancing with someone else.

“If you don’t wanna see me dancing with somebody, don’t show up … don’t start caring about me now.”

What do you love the most about this story?

I love the banter and am a sucker for some clever lines and verbal foreplay, so you’ll find that in spades in this story and are hopefully laughing along with these two as they discover they are the perfect pair. After all, with names like Adam and Eve, it was meant to be.

What challenged you about writing it?

Ending it. I was enjoying writing the repoirte so much that I hated for it to end. There’s also a couple of little secrets that get revealed at the very end of the story so it was tricky trying to bring those up properly and resolve them for a neat and satisfying ending.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

While I’m no Eve, I can relate to her the most due to her journalist profession, love of traveling and dreams of writing. I admire her composure, confidence and sass, while still being cheery and fair.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

Well, there’s no moral or anything, just a guaranteed happy ever after. My biggest wish is that they enjoy a fun escape while they read.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not writing?

When I’m not writing, I’m reading. I was a romance reader first and my passion for the genre lead me to where I am now. Of course, my husband, four cats and twin boys are my biggest loves, although they also make it hard for me to read and write sometimes…okay, most of the time, lol, but I couldn’t without them either, it’s a Catch-22.

“If you don’t wanna see me dancing with somebody, don’t show up … don’t start caring about me now.”

What can go wrong being stuck on a cruise ship with your ex and entering into a fake relationship with a sexy coworker? It might not be the Titanic, thank goodness, but Eve Richard’s heart is sinking by the minute and love is definitely going down.

Pulitzer-prize-winning war journalist turned small-town newspaperman, Adam Seager, has given up a lot for his work, country, and family, but not this time. He knows what he wants, and it’s his coworker, Eve. Her smile is the brightest part of his day and a daily reminder that more adventures are yet to come. When they are both assigned a travel feature on board a new cruise ship, it’s the perfect opportunity to let his feelings set sail.

Eve will never date another coworker or writer again. Been there, done that. Time to pursue her own writing dreams, even if it means bunking with the infuriating and complicated Adam Seager. So what if the butterflies he sets off in her belly can rival the waves outside their cabin. She intends to keep things strictly professional … that is, as much as they can be while also pretending to be a couple. Their relationship might be fake, but the pull to get to know more of him is real. Her reporter’s gut says there is more to uncover than meets the eye. But what will happen when they are back on dry land?
