My Review

WALKING IN WONDER, along with the previous two books in the series, are a way for new parents to continue their spiritual journey alongside parenthood. It's a delightful book with plenty of prompts to help parents with some self-reflection and promote growth. There's also plenty of information about the different childhood stages and advice for new parents. The journalling pages ask a question and then leave a few lines for parents to jot down their thoughts. It's organized really well, easy to follow and use, with helpful information. The book is also a sturdy hardcover with decently thick pages, so it will easily last through the toddler years.

My one complaint is that there is a lot of text to read. I would have liked more journalling space, such as the initial information for each chapter concise enough to fit on one page and then a journaling page for each page of text after that. I wanted more journaling space and less to read as time is very limited when you have a baby waking you up and needing to be fed and held as well as when you have a young toddler who is nonstop busy.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Overall, it's a beautiful book and series that I'd recommend to new parents who want to grow spiritually as their child grows.

Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Front Gate Media, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Excerpt

“What about your happily-ever-after?” The words were out of his mouth before he realized what he’d said.

What if she thought he meant with him? Or worse, that he was encouraging her to find love with someone else?

But wasn’t that what he wanted?

Not in his heart of hearts. Yes, he wanted Tori to be happy. To have someone who cared for her and made her happy. Yet he couldn’t seem to let go of the part of him that longed to be that man.

Her pretty blue eyes met his. “I’ve dreamed of that since I was a little girl watching princess movies. But things didn’t play out the way I thought they would. And while I’m not saying never, I’m no longer the naïve teenager who allowed herself to be swept off her feet by the first guy who showed any real interest in her. I want someone I know will always be there for me. Whose love I will never doubt.”

Micah gulped, wishing he could be that man. Just the way he had before Joel had stolen Tori’s heart. But, just like now, Tori had only thought of him as her friend.

Can't Wait for... The Perfect Rom-Com by Melissa Ferguson (Can't-Wait Wednesday) #CWW #WOW #bookx #newbooks #romancebooks #romcom #chicklit #cleanreads @TNZFiction

Can't-Wait Wednesday  is a weekly meme hosted here to spotlight the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally, they're books that have yet to be released. Find out more here.

Thanks for the well wishes last week! Sorry for not responding to everyone. I'm still in a lot of pain and out of it but doing a bit better. I'm featuring this upcoming rom-com from Melissa Ferguson and Thomas Nelson. Should be full of laughs and swoons. It's my pick this week...

The Perfect Rom-Com
By Melissa Ferguson
Contemporary Romantic Comedy, Clean & Wholesome
Audiobook, Paperback & eBook, 304 Pages
February 11, 2025 by Thomas Nelson

Summary

"Melissa Ferguson delivers yet another sparkling, laugh-out-loud romance!" --RaeAnne Thayne, New York Times bestselling author

She's written dozens of smash hit romance novels. Too bad no one knows it.

Aspiring author Bryony Page attends her first writers conference bursting with optimism and ready to sell her manuscript with long-shot dreams of raising awareness for The Bridge, her grandmother's financially struggling organization where she teaches ESL full-time. But after a disastrous pitch session, she stumbles into correcting another author's work in a last-ditch attempt to make a good impression with the agent. And she, as it turns out, is spot on.

No one is more surprised than Bryony when the agent offers her the opportunity to be a ghostwriter for Amelia Benedict, popular rom-com novelist. Bryony agrees on one condition: she'll write books for this vain, demanding woman just as long as Jack Sterling, literary agent of the legendary Foundry Literary Agency, works to sell her own book too.

What nobody predicted, however, was that Bryony's books would turn Amelia Benedict into the Amelia Benedict, household name and bestselling author with millions of copies sold around the world.

And just like that, the Foundry Agency can't let her go.

But on a personal note, Jack is realizing he can't either.

Don't miss the delightful romantic comedy, The Perfect Rom-Com by Melissa Ferguson, a story of two seemingly mismatched hearts brought together by fate, proving that sometimes, the perfect love story is hidden in the pages of a well-loved book.

" . . . clever and adorable . . . brimming with warm humor and a lot of heart . . . " --Rachel Linden, bestselling author of The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie

"I loved this book!" --Sheila Roberts, USA TODAY bestselling author of The Best Life Book Club

Author Interview

Welcome to my blog today to tell us more about THE DARKNESS DEEPENS!

Thanks so much for having me!

How would you describe the main characters of THE DARKNESS DEEPENS?

Bookstore owner Meryn O’Reilly is brave and very feisty. She can be quick-tempered, but her anger fizzles quickly. She loves her family fiercely and wouldn’t hesitate to risk her life for them, including the sister, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew who aren’t blood but chosen family. Still, nothing is more important to Meryn than her faith, and she gladly risks her freedom and even her life rather than renounce it.

Army Captain Jesse Christensen is calmer and more even-tempered, but he has a core of steel when it comes to protecting those he cares about and standing up for the vulnerable. He finds Meryn’s fire and passion equally amusing, intriguing, and terrifying, as he is well aware of the danger her defiance puts her in. Although he has to hide the fact that he has become a believer in order to keep his position in the military and secretly help the Christians, his faith is strong and growing, and he too is willing to risk everything for it.

What inspired the idea of The Seven Trilogy (now called The Day Draws Near Series)?

I grew up in the age when end-times books and movies were hugely popular and often shown in church. They were also gruesome and horrifying, so I never thought I would write books that had an end-times feel to them. Them our pastor taught a series on Revelation that completely changed my perspective. I came to see the last days, not as something to be feared, but as a time of seeing prophecies and promises being fulfilled before our eyes. A time of great darkness, chaos, and confusion, yes, but a time when God is still sovereign and in control, and His plans, which cannot be thwarted, are clearly unfolding. A time when life might become very difficult for believers in a society increasingly hostile to Christianity, but also a time when, whatever they face, God is with them, giving them hope, peace, and joy in the midst of the chaos and providing the strength and courage to persevere and remain faithful until the end. That new perspective inspired me to write this series in an attempt to convey the light and hope that fills and surrounds believers no matter what is happening in the world around them.

For those new to the series, what should they know?

I know a lot of readers are wary of end times or Christian dystopian books because they are convinced the stories will be bleak or depressing or scary (or all of the above). While many readers have commented that this series does portray a somewhat frightening but very plausible society in the very near future and that they were motivated to ask themselves if they were ready to lose their Bibles or face consequences for standing strong in their faith, the overwhelming sense they took away from these books is one of hope and encouragement. That is my deep desire and prayer for all my books but maybe this series most of all.

What is your favorite part of book two, and how did you avoid the pitfalls that middle books so often have?

Jesse is one of my all-time favourite male characters, and his compassion, courage, strength, and conviction really shine through in this book. Although not easy to write, the ones where he faces severe consequences for refusing to renounce his faith turned out to be some of the most real, raw, and powerful in the series, according to reviewers.

My hope is that those scenes inspire readers to stand strong in their faith, whatever they may face in the future.

I believe this book does manage to hold its own, although it falls in the middle of a series. In addition to strong relationships and a lot of humour and banter, The Darkness Deepens portrays the darkest of circumstances for the characters. Even so, a great light is woven throughout every scene—a light that the darkness cannot overcome, as hard as it may try.

What are you working on next?

I recently signed a contract with Kregel for a brand-new romantic suspense series about five brothers on a ranch in southern Manitoba. The first book—working title Rebel—is about traffickers smuggling desperate refugees into Canada across the border from the States. As with all my romantic suspense novels, this series will deal with serious social issues, but it will also be filled with family, faith, humour, and hope. Book one will come out in the spring of 2026.

What's one of your favorite things about fall?

Oh man. I literally can’t narrow it down to one. Fall is my absolute favourite season. I love the colours, the smell of woodsmoke and leaves outside, the sweater weather, the hot drinks—all of it. My only complaint is that, where I live in southern Ontario, Canada, the season doesn’t last nearly long enough.

I recently wrote a novella called “Just a Gilbert Blythe Kind of Girl” that just came out in the Christmas anthology I’ll Be Home. The story is a love letter to Prince Edward Island and Lucy Maud Montgomery and Anne and Gilbert, and it’s filled with quotes from the books and mini-series, so I’ll wrap up this question in the words of Anne of Green Gables, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

Summary

One perfect island. Two rivals. A star-studded cast. But underneath the glitter, disaster is brewing.

Summer, 1958. Vivienne Rhodes thinks she’s finally landed her break playing Helen of Troy in Apex Pictures’ big-budget epic, A Thousand Ships, an anticipated blockbuster meant to resurrect the failing studio. Naturally, she’s devastated when she arrives on the remote Italian island of Tavalli and finds herself cast as the secondary character, Cassandra—while her nemesis, the fiancé-stealing Lottie Lawrence, America’s supposed “sweetheart,” is playing the lead role instead.

The tension on set, though, turns deadly when the ladies discover that members of the crew are using the production as a front for something decidedly illegal—and that they are willing to kill to keep their dealings under wraps. When the two women find themselves on the run and holding key evidence, Vivienne and Lottie frantically agree to work together to deliver the proof to Interpol, hoping to protect both their lives and their careers.

Staying one step ahead of corrupt cops and looming mobsters, the archrivals flee across the seas. Their journey leads them into Monaco’s casinos, Grace Kelly’s palace, on a road trip through the Alps—even onto another film set, before a final showdown back on Tavalli, where the lives of the entire cast and crew hang in the balance. Vivienne and Lottie finally have the chance to be real heroines—to save the day, the film, maybe even each other—but only if they can first figure out how to share the spotlight.

The Paris Portrait
(A Fabiola Bennett Mystery #3)
By Heidi Eljarbo
Historical Mystery, Dual Timeline, Fiction
Paperback & eBook, 248 Pages
November 12, 2024

Summary

Fabiola stumbles upon a clue that indicates a royal portrait went missing almost two hundred years ago. Is this true, or is there substance to the rumor?

Paris, France, 1973.
After an enjoyable but dusty road trip, Fabiola and her friends, Pippa and Cary, arrive in a small village on the outskirts of Paris to spend a few days with Fabiola’s brother Eivind and his family.

On their first evening there, Eivind shows Fabiola an ancient recipe book he bought at an auction. The book is filled with old writing, and he asks Fabiola to decipher the pages. After the others have gone to bed, she spends hours reading and is gripped by the last pages that have nothing to do with recipes for baked goods and stews. Certain the author was a famous portrait artist at the time of the French Revolution, Fabiola and her friends set out on a treacherous investigation, dodging murderers and thieves to learn the truth.

Versailles, France, 1789.
Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun— portraitist and close friend of the extravagant queen of France, Marie Antoinette—has already painted thirty portraits of the queen. Her contemporaries compare her to the old Dutch masters, calling her one of the greatest portrait painters of her time.

But outside on the streets, Paris is becoming more perilous with every day that passes. Madame Le Brun would be a fool to think the rumors of a revolution will pass, and aristocratic life will continue as before.

Amid the turmoil, she paints one final portrait of Marie Antoinette, knowing well her association with the queen could cause her to be arrested or executed. As chaos and riots in Paris turn to violence, Madame Le Brun flees with her young daughter, hoping her royal friend and the portrait will be safe.

Author Interview

Welcome to my blog today to tell us more about THE PARIS PORTRAIT!

Hello from Norway! Thank you for having me.

The Paris Portrait is the third instalment in a historical mystery series about art historian Fabiola Bennett. Fabiola lives and breathes art history. She seems to stumble upon an art crime wherever she travels—a missing painting by a famous artist, a curious case of a forged or stolen work of art, or a mysterious heist in a foreign country.

For those new to the series, what should they know?

This is a clean series. Even though Fabiola deals with art theft and the occasional murder, the reader can try to solve the mystery without gory details.

Fabiola has two best friend who accompany her on her trips. Pippa who works in a London bookshop and Cary, a detective inspector at New Scotland Yard. The close-knit friendship they share adds a special feeling to the stories.

What inspired the series and focusing this book on this specific historical mystery?

This series is a spin-off from the Soli Hansen Mysteries. Soli is Fabiola’s mother and every bit the same art history enthusiast. The four-book series takes the reader back to Oslo during World War II where Soli goes undercover to help rescue precious art from the Nazis.

When I start a Fabiola Bennett book, I always have a real historical artist in mind. I’ve written about Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, and Rafael before. Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo have also made cameo appearances. The Paris Portrait has a French female artist, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, who painted thirty portraits of Queen Marie Antoinette. Her life was fascinating. She was incredibly talented and spirited, and I studied her autobiography to write her story in this book.

What has been your favorite part of this book, either in writing it or in the story itself?

I have a passion for art history and historical settings. I also love dual timelines. The mysteries take place in the early 1970s. I was a young teenager then, and I’m having so much fun reliving those days. I also enjoy writing about the close and loyal relationship Fabiola has with her two friends, and the slow build-up of her feelings for Cary.

What are you hoping readers will get from this story?

I hope the reader will have fun trying to find out who the culprit is, and that they’ll enjoy learning about different historical times and the great master artists who created amazing paintings. But more than that, I write for those who like a main character who, even though she makes mistakes and jumps into danger without thinking, is a loyal friend, tries to choose the right, and has faith in God.

What do you love about writing dual timelines and mysteries?

Oh, I really love it! The challenge of writing two entwined historical parts and making them blend together and interact is rewarding. I like reading these kinds of books, too.

I don’t make writing easy when I write stories that have two very different time periods, that the historical details need to be exact (no anachronism), real historical artists are involved, the art crimes take place in different countries, and the story needs to progress without the reader guessing who the villain is before the last few pages. But that’s the great challenge I enjoy.

What are you working on next?

Towards the end of the year, I usually publish one or two Christmas/winter novellas. These are clean and wholesome romances that take place at different times in history and in different countries. I’ve compiled these in a series on Amazon called Heartwarming Christmas. My current work in progress is a fairytale-like story called Once Upon a Winter.

Summary

Reynette is desperate to escape the servitude of her step family at Laudermann Manor and the lustful desires of the loathsome, Sir Bjorn.

Lord Ehrhart seeks to please his father and their subjects by securing a future wife and future Duchess of Badenberg.

Will a chance meeting in the woods lead them to find their hope and future within each other’s arms?

The people of Badenberg are preparing to celebrate the anticipated, Midsummer Festival.

In the worn hallways of Laudermann Manor, a young servant girl longs for freedom and love. Bound by duty to her cruel step family, she yearns to attend the festival and meet a kind, brave suitor who will seek her floral wreath and therefore, declare his intent to pursue her.

Her hope takes a turn when her wreath is sought by a mysterious, yet somehow familiar man.

Meanwhile, Lord Ehrhart, son of the Duke, is under growing pressure to find a bride. Trusting his future to the Duke’s advisor, Ehrhart agrees to a series of balls to seek the next Duchess of Badenberg.

But, behind the festivities and beautiful floral decor, a dangerous scheme unfolds— the Duke’s brother and his ruthless son, Sir Bjorn, conspire to seize the Duke’s position, putting love, power and loyalty to the ultimate test.

Help arrives through an unexpected ally as Reynette and Ehrhart seek to unravel the web of deceit and hidden motives.

Extravagant balls are thrown, secrets are revealed, and murderous plots are uncovered in thisreimagining of the Cinderella story.

Excerpt

His father and Badenberg needed him to find a suitable wife. Ludwig’s solution was to host the two balls and hope Ehrhart found a wife among the wealthy and titled of Badenberg. But, though Ehrhart had agreed to such a plan, he couldn’t help but feel he’d find a wife on his own terms. Would that be Beatrice? He stared down at his hands loosely wrapped around the reins. Beatrice was certainly a plausible solution to his problem, but could she be a woman he’d love for the rest of his life? She appeared interested in him and his attention, but did he truly know her intentions? He had meant what he’d told his sisters, he was interested in more than just a pretty face.

Suddenly, a loud thud echoed through the trees, followed by another and another. Then he heard a piercing crack to his left. Ehrhart peered up just in time to watch a tree fall along the path. The jarring movement and sound caused Storm to rear.

With his hold on the reins so loose, the sudden jolt sent Ehrhart out of his saddle and towards the ground.

He closed his eyes and braced for the impact, which came quickly. The wind was knocked out of him. He gasped and breathed deeply to restore the air to his lungs, but his vision was slow to clear. Squeezing his eyes tightly, he tried moving his limbs and muscles. His legs and arms moved without pain, but his back felt stiff from the fall. He opened his eyes, staring at the trees above him. Streaks of sunlight pierced the canopy.

To his left, he heard light footsteps drawing near. Someone was attempting to sneak up on him. He was vulnerable while lying on his back. An urge to protect himself flooded his senses. He grunted as he lifted his head and reached for the dagger concealed within his boot.

After drawing the knife from its sheath, he pulled the weapon into a defensive position near his face. The hilt was held securely in his palm while the blade rested upon his skin, extending up and past his wrist. He was still on the ground, but the knife gave him hope in defending himself.

He waited for the steps to get closer.

When they did, he swung his arm from his face and rolled to his left side, allowing him to look into the eyes of his would-be attacker.
