Summary

A Trinket Could Unleash a Tempest

Locklyn Adair thought that finding the Sea Enchantress would lift her family’s curse. But the ramifications of her desire for a tail reach further than she could ever have dreamed. Now the entire Undersea Realm is in peril, as Circe, armed with the locket capable of controlling the Loch Ness monster, journeys to the North Sea in pursuit of revenge.

Darin Aalto’s specialty is tracking down treasure. When it looks as though a magical locket has fallen into evil hands, he joins Locklyn and her crew on an expedition to recover it, hoping to find a key to his past identity along the way. Despite having no memory of the Mermaid leading the quest, he wonders if she was more than a friend all along.

As a vengeful enchantress, fiery monster, and impending war threaten the Undersea Realm, Locklyn and Darin must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stop the locket’s revenge.

My Review

THE LOCKET'S REVENGE picks up immediately from the first book. There are some recaps from book one, but not many. The same motley crew from the first book continue their journey to save their kingdoms with high risk of failing, but willing to fight on anyway. Fans of the first book will enjoy finding out how their story ends in the second book of this Little Mermaid reimagined duology.

I enjoyed picking back up with these characters who I liked from the first book. They're up against crazy odds and challenges as they race to beat their enemies. The story doesn't lull at all in this second book as they fight on. There is also some character development as these characters figure things out and come into their own a bit. The romance that was a triangle in the last book, starts that way in this one, but then resolves nicely without taking over the story or getting tied up too prettily. I liked that there are strong women in this book, equal to their male counterparts. I also still enjoyed the fantasy world with its different kingdoms, technologies, and wildlife. There are stronger faith elements in this second book that were mostly weaved through well with a stronger emphasis towards the end.

I also had some things in this book that didn't work for me, or I would have liked developed more. I felt like I missed out on getting to explore Atlantis a lot more. The time there is fairly restricted, and an opportunity was lost to more fully flesh out this fantasy world. The maturity and consistency of the characters as well as the drama was more of a problem for me in this book than in book one. An example is one character being the villain in book one and then the opposite somehow in this book without that character appearing in this book at all. The ending is when things went really downhill for me. I felt like the author wanted things to end a certain way and so there an easy, miraculous fix was used with unbelievable results literally with a snap of a finger. I'm not saying that miracles don't happen, but it felt like a cheat here. There also was a lot of drama, characters freezing up who shouldn't and other actions that didn't make sense to me for the characters and situations. Also, as a side note, I felt the title should have been The Sea Witch's Revenge or something along those lines since this title feels like the locket is its own sentient being.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I was hoping for more with this story. It was still enjoyable, and I was happy to find out how things ended. The world is creative with likable characters, an engaging plot, some strong faith elements, and sweet romance.

Content: Some torture and violence.

About the Author

L.E. Richmond was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest by an American writing teacher and a German bookseller. Her childhood largely consisted of imagining stories for her Playmobil

characters and checking out as many books from the library as would fit on six library cards. Now she spends her time chasing three little Muggles, reading aloud to the hazel-eyed young man who has her heart, and attempting to transfer the stories in her head into words for others. Her passion is for words and stories that thrill the soul, and she is endlessly amazed by the One who not only used words to bring this world into being but also crafted the most epic story of all time.

More from the Author

Somebody is going to die. But they didn’t at first.

Minor spoiler alert, a character is going to die near the end of The Locket’s Revenge. But in my first draft of this story, this person didn’t die. It wasn’t until I was going back through and trying to flesh out the book a bit that I realized that this character needed to die. My family knows that I am a discovery writer, but they still laughed when I told them how so-and-so squeaked through alive on the first draft, but the death sentence came in the second one. To me, this is actually one of the most fun things about being a discovery writer. During the drafting process, I get to experience the story for the first time, just like any reader. Most of the time, I don’t actually know what is going to happen next. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
