Author Interview

What inspired you to write SUNDER OF TIME?

In my junior year of college, I had to take History of the English Language (or HEL as we called it). Part of it involved memorizing a Saxon version of the Our Father. I started thinking about all those movies where time travelers go back to England and everyone is speaking perfect modern English. Except of course, they wouldn't have been speaking English in those old days. That got me thinking... what if a modern person actually did go back to post-Roman Britain? And what if she was a spoiled brat?

What do you love the most about this story?

I love the two-pronged story. We get an alternate version of America, one with a whole other backstory than what we're used to, but we also get a look at how hard our ancient forebears had it, how something as simple as getting water was backbreaking work. Both time periods can give a new perspective on our current existence.

What challenged you about writing it?

The research, definitely. Anachronisms can slip in so easily. For instance, I originally had a character sitting at a spinning wheel, not realizing they hadn't yet been invented. And I certainly didn't know they used needles made of bone (!) for their sewing.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

Oddly enough, it's Sigbert! I wanted to become a nun after graduating high school and I like to think had I taken orders, I would have been like a female version of Sigbert, stern, faithful, but ultimately kind.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

I hope they take a happy surprise away from the ending and feel a kinship with the characters and the journey they go on.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not writing?

Well, I find my writing by editing dissertations AND I have a day job, so my days are full. Plus I have a spoiled rotten German Shepherd who gets jealous when I'm on my laptop too long. But I like to make time for outdoor brunch with the hubs as often as possible.

Knowledge isn’t power. It’s dangerous.

At first, she thought they’d do the right thing. A new timeline created by a misbehaving time traveler, a whole society crushed under theocratic oppression. Surely, the council would see reason. Surely, they’d help her fix the timeline.

They didn’t.

Now jailed and under the constant, unblinking eye of her own personal guard, Shannan must fight not only for her freedom, but for her own sanity.

Her one ally is Paul Canaan, a member of the Council but not truly one of them. Living a life of secrets and lies, Paul works in the shadows to free Shannan, and himself, from the artificially created timeline oppressing them both.

Together, Shannan and Paul will have to escape their watchers—before they, and the world, are trapped in a history that should never have been.
