Summary

Centuries before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, in the era of the glorious High Republic, the Jedi are the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy!

After a series of staggering losses, the Republic seems to finally have the villainous Nihil marauders on the run, and it looks like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Until word comes of a suspected Nihil attack on the industrial cosmopolitan world of Corellia, right in the Galactic Core.

Sent to investigate are Jedi Masters Cohmac Vitus and Kantam Sy, along with Padawans Reath Silas and Ram Jomaram, all fighting their own private battles after months of unrelenting danger. On Corellia, Reath and Ram encounter a brazen young security specialist named Crash, whose friend was one of the victims of the Nihil attack, and they team up with her to infiltrate Corellia’s elite while the Masters pursue more diplomatic avenues. But going undercover with Crash is more dangerous than anyone expected, even as Ram pulls in his friend Zeen to help with an elaborate ruse involving a galactic pop star.

But what they uncover on Corellia turns out to be just one part of a greater plan, one that could lead the Jedi to their most stunning defeat yet….

The New York Times best-selling series continues.... For light and life!

My Review

STAR WARS THE HIGH REPUBLIC: MIDNIGHT HORIZON is a story about a planet with an unknown threat and some Jedi and a local security detail force who try to stop it. Interesting characters make up a motley crew as this story moves from an investigation to an all-out war to save the day. Full of romance, friendship, suspense and action.

I have been a Star Wars fan for a long time and loved all the references to Yoda in this story. I also thought the characters were interesting and relatable in different ways. They each had their own paths and struggles to navigate. I really liked the friendships, the motely crew that was formed and the connection the characters built with each other. There is quite a bit of representation and diversity, which is definitely needed in the industry. Of course the fighting scenes were exciting with plenty of good light saber parts. I think I liked Ram the most with his interest in machinery and his part towards the end. I'm curious what will end up happening in future books.

I also had some issues with the story. Some parts felt too busy with too many characters to follow without completely fleshing it all out. I didn't care for almost all the romantic elements. One side storyline regarding one of the Jedis seemed particularly unnecessary. There was also some repetition, thought vomiting and drawn out parts. I honestly wanted more development and depth so that all the words were important or added to the story meaningfully. Some parts felt like I could skim or skip and it wouldn't have made a difference in understanding the story. I just wanted more or more edited out so that what was left was better.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall exciting story with likable characters. I wanted more from the story, but enjoyed it overall.

Content: Some mild swearing, suggestive content, gay relationships, violence.
Source: I received a complimentary copy through Rockstar Book Tours, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.
