Can't Wait for... All Roads Lead to Rome by Yamile Saied Méndez (Can't-Wait Wednesday) #CWW #WOW #bookx #newbooks #AllRoadsLeadtoRome #YamileSaiedMéndez

Can't-Wait Wednesday  is a weekly meme hosted here to spotlight the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally, they're books that have yet to be released. Find out more here.

I don't remember what grabbed me first about this one. I just know it looked kind of cute and light, which (with my crazy life) I need. I think though that last sentence in the description about heartbreak and then healing through faith and hope (earlier in the description) is what makes me want to read this. I expect there will be humor and romance (of course!) too. It's my pick this week...

All Roads Lead to Rome
By Yamile Saied Méndez
Contemporary Romance
Paperback & eBook, 288 Pages
June 24, 2025 by Kensington Books

Summary

What happens when you fall hard for your fallback? In this luminous love story, a young woman who’s spent years traveling the globe to outrun her own grief faces a momentous decision on her 33rd birthday . . .

A moving story about wanderlust, loss, hope, and the special magic of finding love in unexpected places—at just the right time - for readers of Elena Armas, Emily Henry and Mia Sosa, from the acclaimed author of the Reese Witherspoon YA Book Club Pick Furia.

All Stevie Choi ever wanted was a cozy life in suburbia—a loving husband, adorable kids, a dog. That simple dream shattered into a million pieces when she was only seventeen. She’s spent the years since trying to outrun the pain and make something of herself, if only to prove to her estranged family that she’s happy and successful—even though she’s secretly yearning for another chance at love. If only she believed she deserved it . . .

So, Stevie drowns herself in her job, and in the low season, “dates” new countries, leaving her Utah home-base to circle the globe, from Paris to Cairo to Cabo San Lucas, curating a gorgeous Instagram feed—while spending every New Year alone. Then one frigid January day in Rome she meets Cristian. He would be her perfect match—if they weren’t separated by continents and obligations. Unable to say goodbye, they agree that if they’re both single at seventy, they’ll marry each other if only to have a fun companion to travel with . . . But through the years, their friendship grows into something more, and suddenly it’s up to Stevie to choose happiness . . .

Sparkling with hope, All Roads Lead to Rome soulfully examines all the ways a tender heart can be broken—and how faith in the future—and in oneself—can make it whole again . . .

An adorable and highly recommended picture book... So-Hee and Lowy by Anna Kang, illustrated by Christopher Weyant (Review) #newbooks #bookx #soheeandlowy #annakang #christopherweyant #kidlit #childrensbooks #picturebook #kidart #kidslit

So-Hee and Lowy
By Anna Kang
Illustrated by Christopher Weyant
Children's Picture Book
Hardcover & eBook, 40 Pages
April 22, 2025 by Two Lions

Summary

From the creators of Theodor Seuss Geisel winner You Are (Not) Small and Christopher Award winner Eraser comes a heartfelt story about the power of friendship.

So-Hee is lonely. She doesn’t have a brother or sister, nor does she have many friends. More than anything, she longs for a pet she can hold and love. The trouble is, she’s allergic to just about everything. When So-Hee meets a snake named Lowy, all at once, her life starts to change in unexpected ways.

My Review

SO-HEE AND LOWY is a delightful picture book! Full of colorful and interesting illustrations, concise and easy-to-read text, an adorable heroine and an endearing story makes this a book easy to pick up and read over and over again. Perfect for children and families to enjoy!

Read this if you like:
- Relatable, likable characters
- Easy-to-read, meaningful stories
- Pets and community
- Colorful, engaging illustrations that keep you looking

I honestly loved this picture book so much! So-Hee is so relatable with her vulnerability, feeling lonely and having a struggle with something in her life, in this case allergies. It makes her a perfectly imperfect heroine for kids to immediately connect with. Add to that a pet snake who she's not allergic to and an entertaining story that will leave readers happily inspired, and you have a wonderful book perfect for any family. I smiled the whole way through this story and laughed a few times too. The text was short on some pages, such as only one word, to a sentence on others and those words and the pictures said a lot with just a few things. I also liked that the illustrations drew me in and made me study each page to find more about the story than what the text alone said. I'll definitely be keeping this one on my shelves!

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an absolute delight and perfectly written and illustrated! Highly, highly recommended!

Contemporary Christian Romance

April 1, 2025 by Revell

Summary

Sometimes you have to look beneath the surface to find the treasure within

After years of searching, Bren Ryan has found her place in Hope Harbor. Working as a barista suits her to a T, as does the laid-back vibe of her adopted town. Nothing is lacking in her life--except romance. But that's okay. Men are a complication she doesn't need.

Buttoned-up CPA Noah Ward isn't looking for love, either, when he arrives in town on a mission to convince his father to move closer to him. And he certainly doesn't intend to fall for the quirky, free-spirited woman who's taken up residence in his father's guest cottage.

But when Noah finds himself sucked into Bren's quest to help a struggling teen, might the two of them discover there's more to each other than meets the eye?

Excerpt

pp 11-12

Was something burning?

Bren Ryan stopped reading the instructions on the tube of hair dye in her hand, destined for use
later today, and frowned at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Sniffed.

A faint acrid odor with a hint of fishiness prickled her nose.

Not quite a burn smell but close. And definitely worth investigating.

Leaving the dye on the vanity, she followed the scent, wincing as another slash of lightning
strobed through the sky outside the window, followed by a boom of bone-jarring thunder.
Man, this was bizarre weather. Squalls on the Oregon coast were supposed to be confined to the
winter months. They never ushered in August—especially storms that went on for hours. Besides,
even in the winter, torrential rain and high winds were far more common than lightning and thunder.

Whatever the cause of this uncharacteristic outburst from Mother Nature, it was certainly a
dramatic beginning to her thirtieth birthday.

And perhaps it was also an omen that her decision to create a birthday resolution to-do list and
shake things up a bit during this new decade of her life was sound.

The smell intensified as she approached the kitchen, and she paused on the threshold. Gave the
room a slow scan.

Everything appeared to be normal.

Could the unpleasant odor be coming from outside?

Bren crossed to the window above the sink, pushed it higher than the scant inch she’d left it
cracked, and leaned over. Inhaled.

The air outside was damp but fresh.

This was weird.

She straightened up and swiveled back toward the room.

Where could the smell be—

Wait.

Was that smoke coiling out of the electrical socket at the end of the counter?

Summary

She's ready for adventure--isn't she?

Kate Cunningham is facing the opportunity of a lifetime. As a zoo photographer, she's spent years photographing animals in carefully controlled environments, but now National Geographic has dangled an irresistible prize: If Kate can snag a unique photo of a legendary bear in Grand Teton National Park, they just might publish it. It's the kind of challenge Kate has been waiting for, and she's eager to prove herself in the wild.

With more enthusiasm than experience, Kate soon realizes that capturing an image of this bear isn't as simple as she hoped. Fortunately, she crosses paths with Grant Cooper, a seasonal park ranger who knows the terrain--and the bears--better than anyone. His tracking skills could be exactly what Kate needs to succeed, and it doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes. But they're not the only ones with an interest in the park's most famous bear. And his motives are far from innocent.

A clean, kisses-only contemporary romance and summer read by Suzanne Woods Fisher for wildlife, travel, and photography enthusiasts set in Grand Teton National Park.

A delightfully complex historical for Austen fans... Austen at Sea by Natalie Jenner (Review) #newbooks #bookx #austenatsea #nataliejenner #histfic #historicalfiction #austenesque #janeausten #austenprosepr

Austen at Sea
By Natalie Jenner
Historical Fiction, Romance
Audiobook, Hardcover & eBook, 320 Pages
May 6, 2025 by St. Martin's Press

Summary

Two pairs of siblings, devotees of Jane Austen, find their lives transformed by a visit to England and Sir Francis Austen, her last surviving brother and keeper of a long-suppressed, secret legacy.

In Boston, 1865, Charlotte and Henrietta Stevenson, daughters of a Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice, have accomplished as much as women are allowed in those days. Chafing against those restrictions and inspired by the works of Jane Austen, they start a secret correspondence with Sir Francis Austen, her last surviving brother, now in his nineties. He sends them an original letter from his sister and invites them to come visit him in England.

In Philadelphia, Nicholas & Haslett Nelson―bachelor brothers, veterans of the recent Civil War, and rare book dealers―are also in correspondence with Sir Francis Austen, who lures them, too, to England, with the promise of a never-before-seen, rare Austen artifact to be evaluated.

The Stevenson sisters sneak away without a chaperone to sail to England. On their ship are the Nelson brothers, writer Louisa May Alcott, Sara-Beth Gleason―wealthy daughter of a Pennsylvania state senator with her eye on the Nelsons―and, a would-be last-minute chaperone to the Stevenson sisters, Justice Thomas Nash.

It's a voyage and trip that will dramatically change each of their lives in ways that are unforeseen, with the transformative spirit of the love of literature and that of Jane Austen herself.

My Review

AUSTEN AT SEA titles this story so well in its reference to the sea voyage these characters undertake, which ends up being the pivotal moment of their lives. It's a story of self-discovery as they travel to meet Jane Austen's elderly brother and the last of her siblings still living. With delightful sisters at the center and a cast of equally wonderful side characters, readers will fall in love. Austen fans will enjoy the many nods to her life and works, with some Dickens and other classic works mentioned as well. There is a depth to this story from the complex relationships to a young nation still forming its laws and the rights of its people, particularly in regards to women and marriage. Highly recommended!

Read this book if you like:
- Jane Austen with references to her books and life
- Strong female relationships
- Familial ties and friendships
- References to classical literature
- Strong female leads
- Book clubs (regardless that its formed with judges)
- Complex and sweet romance for all ages
- Women's rights and references to a young America

I couldn't keep a smile off my face as I read this. I loved these sisters and those around them. These girls! They possess intelligent minds and strong wills, but the world is still not ready for women to take their place and they have an uphill battle. Thank goodness they have plenty on their side willing to support them and push them on. The justices reading circle discussing Austen's works was especially entertaining while equally being insightful. I loved Frances Austen and the melding of hearts for those who loved his sister. I loved reading the author's depiction of Louisa May Alcott as well as other figures and movements of the time. There were so many different dynamics. There's the various families, social standings, English culture and laws, American culture and laws, the end of the Civil War and the assassination of Lincoln, rights of women, and complex romance and expectations. I loved that I wasn't quite sure what was going to happen and if romance would bloom and, if so, with whom. The story itself was consistently paced with some emotional high peaks of sadness, happiness, passion, anger, heartbreak, loss and joy.

Here are a few parts that resonated with me:

"How much strength did the larger world sap from women, in asking those who could afford to do so, to stand idly still in one spot, while rendering the poor transient–if not homeless–for life?"

"Life wasn't at all like the law. There was no logic to the yearning of his heart, hence he could not reason himself out of it. Nash disliked being at the mercy of something he did not understand, much as he was attracted to it. The members of his profession boasted the skill of comprehension above all; they firmly believed that nothing could ever be worded to outsmart them.
But there were no words for how he felt about Charlotte Stevenson. And he couldn't help recalling, with increasing panic, Mr. Knightley's famous statement to Emma upon declaring his own heart:
If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more."

"I'd rather I be the one to get my life wrong."

"Freedom is not about ensuring you get everything you want, but rather becoming the best self that you can be. Therein lies life's great reward for us and for those around us."

I only have a few complaints. One is that there were a few parts that dragged and some insertions in the story that weren't really necessary. Another is that the author would all of a sudden move forward in time and then not disclose what happened in the interim until a few chapters later. To me, it felt jarring and didn't allow the story and characters to continue and as a reader like the author was reaching in and disrupting my enjoyment of the story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I loved so much about this book! Being an Austen fan, I found all the different discussions about her books and looks into her life and family to be utterly charming. I also adored these two sisters as well as the other side characters to their story. This is definitely a story to pick up if you're also a fan!

Content: Some references to marital and non-marital affairs.
Source: I received a complimentary copy through Austenprose, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Summary

Fire dreamed of water, but the first sip would be its last.

Gilde has spent her life isolated in the wild marshlands, a place too wet for the dragon to go. She’s safe there, according to her father. So why is he asking her to leave with him now that she has come of age? There is more to Gilde’s family than she knows, and debts need to be paid.

Betrayed and shattered, she wakes in a crumbling mountain castle with the beast of her nightmares. Except this dragon speaks like a man and reads books. His kindness confuses her and opens a forgotten longing in her heart, all while Gilde plans her escape from a mountain full of secrets.

This place can unveil her past and why she was sacrificed to the beast —truths that may put both their lives in danger if they can’t learn to trust each other. But how can Gilde ever trust again? Especially after she discovers what dragons truly are.

(Affiliate links included.)

My Review

EMBERGOLD is about a girl who finds nothing in her world is as it seems and the boy who lost his humanity to dragon fire. It's about both blood and found family, unusual friendships, magic, danger, an element of faith and some romance. Recommended to fans of Christian fantasy.

It's been a while since I read a book with dragons and this one has an interesting twist that I really like. Plus dragons. The characters are each unique with their own arcs as the story progresses. There is also a bit of grit to the story with some of the situations and side characters. Gilde and Wil are both likable and are easy to cheer on. The romance isn't present until half-way through the story and very slowly builds to more of a focus towards the end. There is also plenty of danger and challenges that these characters have to overcome before they find their happily-ever-after

There were a few things that could have been done better. Some places and the story overall with the world development and fully fleshing out all the different plot points. The faith element also felt a bit forced in. If it would have been worked through more with the world and culture the it would have made more sense.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall likable story, especially if you like dragons and romance.

Content: Some abuse and violence.

Summary

No one betrays the Academy. But now Euphemia must decide: break the rules for her enemy, or let the rules break her heart.

On the outskirts of London sits a seemingly innocuous institution with a secretive aim—train young women to distract, disrupt, and discredit the patriarchy. Outraged by a powerful lord’s systematic attack on women’s rights in Parliament, the Academy summons its brightest—and most bitter—pupil to infiltrate the odious man’s inner circle. A deal is struck: bring down the viscount, and Miss Euphemia Flite will finally earn her freedom.

But betting shop owner Gabriel Royce has other plans. The viscount is the perfect pawn to insulate Gabriel’s underworld empire from government interference. He’s not about to let some crinoline-clad miss destroy his carefully constructed enterprise—no matter how captivating he finds her threats.

From the rookeries of St. Giles to the ballrooms of Mayfair, Euphemia and Gabriel engage in a battle of wits and wills that’s complicated by a blossoming desire. Soon Euphemia realizes it’s not the broken promises to her Academy sisters she should fear. . . . It’s the danger to her heart.

What Not to do on Vacation
By Rachel Magee
Romcom, Contemporary Romance, Women's Fiction, Clean & Wholesome
Audiobook, Paperback & eBook, 320 Pages
May 20, 2025 by Thomas Nelson

Summary

Ten Things I Hate About You meets the charm (and sisterly shenanigans!) of Netflix's Nobody Wants This in this slow-burn, fake dating rom-com from the author Kate O'Keeffe says "you can get utterly lost in."

Savannah is on a mission to reconnect the Prestly sisters the best way she knows how: reliving their carefree childhood summers at the beach. She's booked the same beach house, convinced her sisters to take the month off, and even made a bucket list to fit in all their favorite coastal fun. It's going to be perfect . . . or else. (And if planning this trip has anything to do with a certain secret she's hiding . . . well, let's not dwell on that.) Sun, sand, and some sisterly bonding--what could possibly go wrong?

Enter Bianca, the baby of the family, with a huge announcement: she's getting married! And her sisters' reactions are . . . not exactly what she hoped for. But Bianca is on a mission to prove that she's not the mess they think she is. Her grand plan? To find love for Cora, her perpetually single sister, on the same dating app where she found her fiancé. The stakes? A bet that if Cora can't find her 'One' on the app, Bianca will call off her engagement. A challenge Bianca is all too ready to tackle head-on, even if it means a little conniving. Cora's about to get swept off her feet, whether she likes it or not!

Meanwhile, Cora is rolling her eyes so hard they might get stuck. Love is a fairy tale for other people, not her. As she's filling out her dating profile, she thinks--nope, she knows--it'll be easy to show her sisters just how absurd this whole love thing is. So what if this Jax guy Cora just matched with is Hemsworth-brother hot? And, if his messages could be believed, maybe even slightly charming? None of this is real, anyway--love just doesn't come easily Cora. And she's getting ready to prove it. She's got this under control.

(Spoiler alert: nothing is under control.)

What Not to Do on Vacation is a charming and lighthearted rom-com that promises low spice but high laughter. Join our leading ladies as they navigate through beach vibes, dating app drama, fake dating, and a playboy hero with a heart of gold in this modern reimagining of The Taming of the Shrew. A must-read for those who enjoy adorable romance sans the steam, a healthy dose of family drama, and a fair share of humor. So, if you're ready to dip your toes into this sun-kissed, feel-good read, don't wait! For fans of Jenny Hale, Emma St. Clair and Melissa Ferguson.

- Self discovery and character development
- Delightful banter with plenty of laughs and swoons
- Close quarters between two
- Strong family ties

This book was so much fun! The beginning was heartbreaking as was Demi's view of herself, which definitely wasn't helped by the people who only saw her scars and treated her less for them. I loved Demi's spunk to learn to be useful and make her own way in the wagon train to Oregon. Alex is this caring, hard working, ruggedly handsome man who is intrigued by Demi and wants to get to know her. They end up working together which leads to spending time together. There are definitely some obstacles, especially as Demi doesn't feel she's worthy, to them finding their happily-ever-after ending. It's perfectly sweet when it does come.

My only real complaint is that I felt like the story was rushed towards the end. There are some changes that need to be made and it isn't as gradual or as developed as I would have liked it to be, so it felt a bit jarring.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a delightful western romance full of heart, fun, and sweet romance. I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan on reading the next installment.

Summary

The heart is deceitful above all things. Who can understand it?

When Juliana Issot’s godmother invites her to spend the month of Christmas at a house party in Yorkshire, Juliana feels compelled by affection to accept. Never mind that she escaped Yorkshire at first chance to secure a more glittering match in London and that the only matrimonial prospect back homeis her childhood playmate, Willelm.

Willelm Armitage is a born-and-bred Yorkshireman, and as far as he is concerned, Juliana belongs here, too—here at his side. However, the one time he dared to convince her of this, she speedily gave him the right-about, making him question whether she truly is the right choice for him. After all, if she cannot see how well they suit, why should he force her hand ?

A Christmas house party with pudding, games, charades, riding, and carols turns out to be just the thing to remind Juliana of how much she loves Yorkshire. But when her nostalgia slips into love, will she be able to admit that Willelm knows the longings of her heart better than she knows her own?

My Review

A YORKSHIRE CAROL is a delightful, festive, romantic story set during Christmastime at a month-long house party. Fans of Regency romances and this author will adore this story! Highly recommended!

I have read and listened to this story and can recommend both as well as reading this more than once. It's definitely worth having on your shelves. The narrator did a fabulous job with all her voice inflections. Sometimes I feel like books are overdramatized, but she was a great fit for this story and represented the characters very well, even down to some of the accents.

It's one of those stories to grab when you need a feel-good story or something to relax with that will make you smile. There's a bit of humor, some matchmaking, friendships and all the celebrations of the season while also the entertainments of a house party. I found the characters to be delightful, even the the side characters all the way down to the adorable pets. I loved that Juliana and Willelm were childhood friends and have this deep understanding of each other. There were so many good moments between them. Some of them serious words of counsel and understanding and others of humor and romance. Of course, their path couldn't be all easy and the author did well in putting a few misunderstandings and misperceptions in place that felt authentic. The ending is sweet and perfect for this story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I loved this book! I can't recommend it enough for sweet Regency romance fans!

My Review

A FORTUNE MOST FATAL is a fictionalized Jane Austen staying with family as her sister-in-law prepares to birth her fourth child and inserting herself in the middle of a mystery while also trying to escape her sister-in-law's machinations to marry her off. The story is full of familial connections, teasing, Jane's wit, mystery, tension, some danger and a touch of romance. Recommended to fans of the author and historical mysteries who can handle a bit of a darker edge.

I think it's quite an undertaking to take a historical figure like Austen and write her into a fictionalized story like this, especially one where her faults end up being on display. She's in her earlier years at 21 years of age, not yet published, has had some difficult things already in her life, but has so much hope for the future. She's intelligent, opinionated, witty, and has a good heart. She's definitely not the usual debutante or young lady worried about decorum, getting married and having babies. I respected her drive to figure out what was going on even though it also got her in trouble. Jane can be a bit overdramatic, letting her imagination and assumptions get the better of her. As a reader and fan, I wanted to yank her back and calm her down in places. Thankfully she redeems herself in the end.

I loved Jane's relationships with her siblings. They're so well written that the love and comradery between her and her brothers and, through letters her sister, are palpable. All the characters in this story were very well drawn in all their complexities and differences. They each lend their own dynamic and role to this story. The romance isn't center stage at all and I liked the way that was weaved through the story. The relationships, teasing and banter are my favorite part of this book.

The plot itself meanders its way. There is drama and everyday life. There's Jane's resistance to her sister-in-law's plans to have her married and some terrible options for husbands. There's a bit of tension between her family members. There's her desire to write and to be left alone and her being forced to help differently than she thought. Then there's the mystery of this girl and the slowly increasing danger as the story climaxes towards the end. The end is marvelously done. It's not too perfectly tied up. There's a good dose of danger and Jane ignoring what a sensible young woman would do for what she would do. The author also left a bit of sweetness and unknown.

I also thought some parts were a little too forward for this story. This read like a cozy mystery or sweet historical fiction and then there were some dark and disgusting things unveiled that were quite shocking. It's enough that I wouldn't recommend this to most cozy mystery and clean fiction readers.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall enjoyable and entertaining story.

My Review

KATE LANDRY HAS A PLAN initially feels like it'll be a cute romance, and it is, but readers will find there's a lot more to this story as the heroine learns to give up her own plan and hand it over to God. Delightful characters, an engaging and somewhat humorous story, and sweet romance is sure to be an enjoyable read for Christian romance fans.

Read this book if you like:
📃A New Orleans setting
📃Swoony romance
📃Strong themes of faith weaved throughout
📃Scrumptious food (I'm going to be craving beignets for some time)
📃Delightful characters
📃Complex mother/daughter relationships
📃Strong female friendships
📃Somewhat ugly but still adorable dogs

This story has such a fun start! Not only does Kate have a somewhat embarrassing meet-cute with an old friend, she also has a run in with her ex and experiences polar opposite sparks. She has a delightful niece who she adopted when she was two who is now beginning her teens. They're in a battle with getting a dog, which lends some great humor. She's a bit controlling with a strong faith and a big heart. She has plans. Micah also has plans but has learned that he's had to give up a lot of them. He's caring, ruggedly handsome, full of charm, and also has a strong faith. I liked the way Micah and Kate balanced each other. I also liked that they're a bit older with some life behind them, but still a lot more ahead. There are a lot of places that pull on emotions in this book with themes of vindictiveness, forgiveness, letting go, and prioritizing what's most important. There's plenty of pieces of wisdom to take along with the sweet romance, friendships, and humor.

I did get a bit frustrated with Kate's singlemindedness in the middle of the book. It zapped out all the fun stuff and she was avoiding everything more important in her life.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a delight to read! I adored the characters, the swoon-worthy romance, and appreciated how faith was represented.
