My Review
CHANGE OF HEART was a sweet surprise! It had a charming, down-to-earth, family feel to it. The characters were interesting and felt like they could walk right off the pages—relatable characters with their own struggles, weaknesses, hopes, and dreams. The romance was slow, developed, and lovely. An enjoyable and delightful read from beginning to end.
So, you know those books that are just pure enjoyment? The ones that feel heartfelt and where there are some struggles, but are on the lighter side? The ones that make you sigh and smile and so very happy at the end? This is that kind of book. Just pure enjoyment.
I loved the characters! Loved them! Val was totally fun! She was spontaneous, has some serious homemaking skills, has an appreciation for art, is a hard worker, intelligent, charming, beautiful, has some confidence issues, and very caring. If Val lived in my neighborhood or went to my church, I would love to be her friend. Nathaniel is a little stiff at first. He's been torn down and he's worked as a slave to his law firm, leaving his kids to feel lonely more than he really wants to. He's a good man and has a good heart. They're backgrounds couldn't have been more different, but they're exactly what the other needs.
The pacing of the story was steady. There was some romantic tension, but also with the characters themselves and some outside/secondary characters. I loved how Val and Ruby and Finn are together and also how Nathaniel is with Val and the kids when he's present. He's definitely there and present when he's with them and when the office isn't calling him away. It felt so realistic and like so many situations today and that struggle to have a successful career and a happy family. I loved how the relationships bloomed and how they drove the story.
If you enjoy contemporary romance, chick-lit, happily-ever-after stories with sweet romance, some good heart, and a little Southern charm, then I'd highly recommend CHANGE OF HEART!

Excerpt
Val clung to him, feeling utterly
ridiculous, and at the same time completely content in his arms. “I’m sorry,”
she said, once she trusted her voice.
“The summer’s been good, hasn’t
it?” Nathaniel laid his cheek on the top of her head and held her tighter.
“I’ll miss this porch most of all.”
“Me, too.” She pressed her face
against his chest, a fresh wave of tears rushing into her eyes. She’d sat in
this very place, unloading her darkest secrets, her greatest fears, been
comforted and listened, and even... The memory of Nathaniel’s kiss was nearly
more than she could take. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed, and she
gasped for air. She took a step back, releasing her grip.
“Val?”
Swallowing against her tight
throat, she raised her gaze to his.
He lifted a wet strand of hair
from her face, and his gaze dropped to her lips before returning to hers.
If only she could look into those
blue eyes every day, be held by him every time she cried, if only...
“Daddy! Val!”
The sound of Ruby’s voice broke Val’s blissful
bubble. She must have gotten impatient and unbuckled her carseat.
“We’re on the porch, Ruby.”
Nathaniel’s gaze didn’t leave Val’s face.
Val rubbed her fingers over her
cheeks one more time before hurrying to meet Ruby. She glanced back and saw
Nathaniel still watching her until she rounded the side of the house.
