Summary

After almost dying on Mars, astronaut Liz Anderson returns to Earth, but not to a hero’s welcome. America is in turmoil. The war is over, but the insurgency has just begun. So while life on Mars may have been deadly, at least up there she knew who the enemy was. Along with her, Liz has brought the remnants of the artificial intelligence that waged war on two planets. Buried somewhere deep within the cold electronic circuits lies the last vestiges of her dead partner Jianyu. Liz is torn, unsure whether he’s somehow still alive in electronic form or just a ploy by an adversary that will go to any length to win. Heartbroken and treated with suspicion, she finds herself caught up in the guerrilla war being waged on Earth, wondering if the AI threat is truly gone, or if it has only just begun.

Praise for REENTRY

"It's good to consider the AI possibilities ahead. Peter Cawdron's REENTRY is a marvelous read but also an intriguing scenario for what might go on within the superintelligences." ―Vernor Vinge, Hugo Award-winning author of A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky

Fill in the Blanks with Author Peter Cawdron
  1. The launch is my favorite thing about the cover of REENTRY, because it contradicts the title and that sets the mood for the book quite nicely.
  2. The main reason Liz travels back to earth is because she genuinely believes she can make a difference even though the odds are against her
  3. Liz would describe Jianyu as stoic and calm
  4. Liz would describe the AI as vicious and unpredictable
  5. Liz would say her first impression of coming back to earth was being abandoned, finding herself more alone than she was on Mars.
  6. As I wrote REENTRY, I was challenged by my editor to follow up on RETROGRADE. Originally, there were no plans for a sequel, but I’m glad he encouraged me to broaden my thinking as the two stories complimentary. All too often, sequels are thinly veiled repeats, but RETROGRADE and REENTRY are yin and yang
  7. My favorite thing about the story is the interplay between Liz and the AI. They’re coming from very different places, with wildly differing motivations, but they have to trust each other as there’s no one else either can rely on.
  8. Be patient is the one piece of advice I’d give to aspiring authors. Writing is a passion, not a job. It’s a love, not a task. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Find your satisfaction in a story well told, not in the adulation of others. Remember the advice of Rudyard Kipling, “If you can meet success and failure and treat them both as impostors, then you are” an author worth reading.
  9. I struggle with what to read next as a lot of authors send their work my way. I start reading far more books than I finish. For me, it’s all about character development. If there’s no depth of character, I move on to something else.
  10. I have a love/hate relationship with Michael Crichton. I love his novel Sphere, Congo, Andromeda Strain and Timeline, but books like Jurassic Park and State of Fear are decidedly anti-science. As a fellow science fiction writer, I wish he was still alive as I’d love to talk to him about his ideas and appeal for more science positive stories.
  11. Dark chocolate is my go-to treat/snack when I’m craving something.
  12. I’m looking forward to watching Hugh Howey’s post-apocalyptic dystopian story Wool in the theaters. Wool came tantalizingly close to being produced by Ridley Scott but somehow fell through. Come on, Scott. Enough with reboots. Let’s get more original stories on the silver screen.
  13. I last binge watched the The Good Place show. It’s difficult to drop back to one 30-minute show per week as it is sooo good in bulk.
  14. If you got in my car right now, you’d hear my teenaged daughter’s phone playing through my speakers as they don’t trust my taste in music.
  15. Spring is my favorite time of the year as the flowers are in bloom and a little rain is perfect weather for staying in doors and writing.
  16. Family holidays are my favorite thing about summer. It’s easy to become caught up with work and miss the people that are really important in life.
  17. I like my pizza with mushrooms on top (much to the disgust of my daughters).
  18. Anywhere with a view of nature is a place to vacation. Forget about cities, I find trees, hills, forests and beaches invigorating.
  19. One thing I can’t live without is dark hot chocolate on a cold morning
  20. I’m working on a First Contact novel called 3zekiel next, to be released later this year.
