Summary

Bestselling author Katie McGarry’s trademark wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance is given a new twist in the gritty YA contemporary novel, Only a Breath Apart.

Jesse Lachlin is cursed.

So the town folklore says, but while Jesse’s had his fair share of tragedy, the only curse he believes is in his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year, Scarlett Copeland.

Scarlett Copeland is psychic.

Glory Gardner tells Scarlett she has hidden psychic abilities, but Scarlett thinks Glory is delusional. What is real is Scarlett’s father’s irrational fears, controlling attitude, and the dark secrets at home. Scarlett may have a way to escape, but there’s a hitch: she’ll have to rely on the one person she used to trust, the same boy who broke her heart, Jesse Lachlin.

Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings for each other. But as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…

Interview

Q: Would you tell us a little more about the main characters from ONLY A BREATH APART?

A: Scarlett and Jesse were childhood best friends until something happened right before high school that tore them apart. Now, Scarlett, the girl everyone believes has the picture perfect life, and Jesse, the boy everyone in their small town says is cursed, must work together to achieve their goals for their senior year.

Q: What inspired this paranormal/fantasy twist on your usual contemporary stories with Jesse supposedly being cursed and Scarlett being psychic?

A: A few years ago, as a gift, a friend of mine took me to a psychic reading. I didn’t really believe in psychics, but this psychic knew things about me that I have never told anyone. Things that were so private, no one else would have known. That experience had me thinking—what is real in the real world? How many of us have had experiences we can’t explain and how does that fit into the contemporary world? I decided to explore these questions in Only a Breath Apart.

Q: What did you find most challenging about writing ONLY A BREATH APART compared to your other books?

A: It took me several years to work up the courage to write Scarlett’s story. She has a father who is abusive towards her mother, and it was extremely hard to write Scarlett’s story and her pain. But it did feel fantastic to write her arc, to see her grow and to be by her side as she found her inner strength.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the book’s cover?

A: I love this cover! It is reflective of my favorite moment in the book where Jesse proves to Scarlett that his land “breathes,” and it also is the moment where they first kiss!

Q: What part or aspect of this story do you love the most?

A: I love how I played with the mystical while writing a contemporary story.

Q: What are you working on next?

A: I’m working on last minute tweaks to my next novel, Echoes Between Us!
