Excerpt

[Arillia, the high queen (Lof Raelein) of Faeraven, shelters with her critically wounded husband Elcon in a cave while fleeing from their enemy’s forces. Elcon’s loyal servant Anders stands by, as well as a guardian named Eathnor. Dorann, a tracker skilled in healing arts, has been tending Elcon.]

Arillia laid a damp cloth on her husband’s forehead. He groaned and thrashed on the makeshift bed they had made from fallen logs and evergreen boughs, his movements as restless as the storm moaning outside the cave. Dorann leaned over Elcon with a restraining hand on his shoulder. “Why does Elcon seem so much worse?” she asked the tracker. “You said that the poultice would draw poisons from his wound.”
“He’s lain with a grave wound in a dank cave for too long.” Dorann shook his head. ‘The poultices and infusions I’ve given him may not be enough to counter that.”
“Well, then, do something else!” Arillia immediately regretted snapping at Dorann.
“Milady…” Eathnor moved to her side. “My brother is doing everything within his power to help the Lof Shraen.”
“Except remove him from this cave.” Dorann’s frustration came through despite the soft tone he used.
Anders’s eyes gleamed as he glanced back from the cave entrance, where he stood guard. “Do we dare risk leaving?”
“It might save the Lof Shraen’s life,” Eathnor answered, “but at the risk of ending it. With Pilaer’s warriors searching the forest for those fleeing Torindan, we could all be killed.”
Dorann put a hand on the back of his neck. “I don’t see how we can avoid taking the chance.”
Arillia clasped her hands together. “I can’t bear watching my husband fade away like this.”
The wan light filtering from the cave entrance picked out the lines of strain in Eathnor’s face. “When the storm ends, we could make a stretcher and bear him to a hunter’s hut my brother and I know in the wild lands. It’s remote and well-hidden.”
“That’s a good idea,” Dorann approved. “We’d keep him warm and dry there.”
“Provided we reach it,” Eathnor pointed out. Thunder boomed, and he stopped speaking but continued when it stopped. “Exposing ourselves to danger might not end well.”
Dorann straightened. “So could staying hidden. You know that, Eathnor. The longer we remain here, the greater the likelihood of being discovered.”
Eathnor nodded. “True.” He cut a glance toward Arillia. “The choice of course is yours, Lof Raelein.”
Arillia closed her eyes. How could she possibly decide such a thing?
