Summary

Against Every Warning, She’s Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as “Black Heart”

All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.

As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed “Black Heart,” she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing–and some of her own to do as well.

With Camden’s court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope–and to each other–if they want to survive.

Interview

Would you tell us a little more about the main characters from ON WINGS OF DEVOTION?

Absolutely! Arabelle Denler is an heiress—she inherited a large sum from her aunt—but also a trained nurse, even before war broke out. She spent most of her childhood alone, at a boarding school—her father is an explorer and was lost in the wilds of South America when her mother died unexpectedly, and her aunt couldn’t be reached. As a result, all Arabelle wants is family. A husband, children…things she thinks she’ll get by marrying a friend’s brother, gaining that security in exchange for her fortune, which will save his ancestral home. But when God asks her to give up even that tame dream, she’s not sure what the future might hold.

Phillip Camden is a former ace pilot, grounded after his entire squadron goes up in the flames and he’s blamed for the accident. The press has dubbed him “Black Heart”…a name he seems determined to live up to as he stomps his way to his new job among the codebreakers of Room 40. But Camden’s heart isn’t black—it’s shattered by the loss of his closest friends, by the guilt he feels for living while they died, for not saving them all. In his mind, he died that day too. And it’s only a matter of time before that death catches up to him.

What was Arabelle’s first impression of Phillip?

She sees him walking beneath the windows of her hospital every day, and while his stormy good looks make all the nurses and aids swoon, she sees something far different than the moody, handsome man. She sees someone broken and in need of healing. Long before they meet, Arabelle has been praying for the man she has a feeling is grossly misunderstood by society. And when finally they are introduced, she’s certain she’s right. Because she sees in him the same lost, angry loneliness that she knew as an adolescent, before her aunt claimed her and her father was found.

What part or aspect of this story do you love the most?

I’m a sucker for snarky characters and those in need of redemption, so I really loved the process of revealing Camden’s true heart. He’s definitely a man whose bark is vicious, but only to hide his hurts. Once he counts you as a friend, there’s no one in the world more loyal.

Did you find anything especially interesting while researching the book?

I learned that pilots in the Great War only had a life expectancy of a few months! I knew it was short, but I didn’t realize it was THAT short. I also learned that because of the high mortality rate, commoners were allowed into the flying corp—pilots had to be officers, and until then officers had to be gentlemen. But because they needed men so badly, anyone could now become an officer…which for the first time leveled the playing field. We today think, “Great!” but it really wasn’t for a lot of men. Those who had grown up in humble circumstances were suddenly invited to house parties and encouraged to live life fast and loose—and it destroyed many of them as surely as the dangerous missions did. A sad and generally overlooked part of “equality.”

For readers not familiar with the series, what should they know?

The entire series revolves around the world of intelligence in England during the Great War. When the transatlantic cable was cut in the opening days of the war, all communication became wireless—and England discovered they could intercept every single telegram the Germans sent. They quickly dashed together a team of codebreakers to try to break the German codes—and by the end of the war, they were cracking them daily, decoding everything. I use this very real backdrop called Room 40 (the actual room number where the first cryptographers worked) and introduce my own fictional characters in amidst the historical figures to try to show some of the amazing work these people were doing.

What book are you currently reading or what three books are on your tbr?

I’m just finishing up Kristi Ann Hunter’s A Pursuit of Home. Next up is Fire Storm by Nancy Mehl.

What is one thing you are looking forward to in the new year or a goal you set for 2020?

We’re undergoing some pretty big changes in my family as my husband changes careers, so I’m just excited to see what God has in store for us and what paths He may take us on! And I’m also super excited to dive into my next manuscript.

What are you working on next?

I’ve already turned in the final book in the Codebreakers series, A Portrait of Loyalty, as well as a standalone set in Civil War Georgia, Dreams of Savannah, that will come out after that one and before my next series. So the next one I’ll be writing is The Nature of Lady, book one in the Isles of Secrets series set on the Isles of Scilly, just off the coast of Cornwall. The first book involves a mix-up with my heroine and a missing girl who shares her name, a very concerned brother who is of course our hero, a hunt for (actual) pirate treasure, and a heroine who cares more for studying nature than things of society. It’s going to be such fun!

Summary

Three years into the Great War, England’s greatest asset is their intelligence network—field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack every German telegram. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren’t enough.

Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy that just won’t give up. He’s smitten quickly by the too-intelligent Margot, but how to convince a girl who lives entirely in her mind that sometimes life’s answers lie in the heart?

Amidst biological warfare, encrypted letters, and a German spy who wants to destroy not just them, but others they love, Margot and Drake will have to work together to save them all from the very secrets that brought them together.
