Summary

An ominous butterfly house. A sinister legacy. An untraceable killer.

In 1921, Marian Arnold, the heiress to a brewing baron's empire, seeks solace in the glass butterfly house on her family's Wisconsin estate as Prohibition and the deaths of her parents cast a long shadow over her shrinking world. When Marian's sanctuary is invaded by nightmarish visions, she grapples with the line between hallucinations of things to come and malevolent forces at play in the present. With dead butterflies as the killer's ominous signature, murders unfold at a steady pace. Marian, fearful she might be next, enlists the help of her childhood friend Felix, a war veteran with his own haunted past.

In the present day, researcher Remy Shaw becomes entangled in an elderly biographer's quest to uncover the truth behind Marian Arnold's mysterious life and the unsolved murders linked to an infamous serial killer. Joined by Marian's great-great-grandson, can Remy expose the evil that lurks beneath broken wings? Or will the dark legacy surrounding the manor and its glass house destroy yet another generation?

My Review

SPECTERS IN THE GLASS HOUSE is a story about a mother and her daughter and the legacy they leave in the choices they make. It's about a misunderstanding of mental health, particularly historically. It's about family, friendship, faith and love. Fans of the author and dual timeline suspense with a gothic feel will enjoy this one!

This author is so skilled at writing these gothic stories that are compelling and equally chilling. This one was particularly chilling and was fairly slow in building towards doubly climatic endings, one in the past and one in the present. The heroines who are the main characters are complex and likable through the whole story. They are who compelled me to keep turning the pages to find out how things would end. There are a few red herrings but mostly as a reader you find out what is happening as the characters do. This story also has serial killer vibes which is an interesting mix with the elements of family, faith and romance. I liked the historical romance as it worked for me and is utterly sweet. The current day one I felt needed a lot more development. The faith elements are weaved through the story really well.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a bit of a hard one to say I thoroughly enjoyed as it is a somewhat difficult read with seeing how mental health was handled historically and the chilling murders. However, the characters and other aspects of the story made it a solidly good read. SPECTERS IN THE GLASS HOUSE is another masterfully told and chilling story from this author!

Content: Some descriptions of violent murders and scenes, attempted murder.
