Reunions can be deadly.

After a savage attack in university, Kira Summers fled to the safety of northern Canada and her work as a polar bear scientist. But when her whistleblower brother dies in a mysterious car crash, she must return home to bury him and pack his belongings. Unaware she’s carrying explosive evidence someone’s willing to kill for, she has no choice but to rely on the one person she never thought she’d see again.

Lukas Tanner, a widowed single father of a special needs toddler, moved to Churchill five years ago. As the proud owner of Guiding Star Enterprises, a wilderness tour company, he and his daughter lead a simple life. But when Kira comes crashing back into his world, he realizes God has other plans. Now, Lukas and Kira must confront a merciless killer as their past and present collide in a deadly race—a race they must win if they have any hope of a future together.

Interview with Character Ruby Gallagher

AUTHOR: Hello, Ruby thanks for taking the time to speak to us today. I guess you know plenty about Churchill, Manitoba, and Kira Summers and Lukas Tanner.

RUBY: Hi, thanks for having me. I was born in Churchill and I met my husband Rob when he came here as a commercial pilot in the early ’70’s. We bought a bakery on the main street and built on to it until we made it into a Café and a store for essentials like cold weather clothing and tourist gifts.

AUTHOR: So, you’ve never lived anywhere else?

RUBY: No, we love the North. We raised our two kids here, Joy and Rory. Churchill is just the right size–everyone knows everyone and the crime rate is low. At least, it was till this happened to Kira. And Henry Tanner, Lukas’s uncle built up a solid guiding business for tourists. He took clients out birding in the spring, on whale tours all summer, and then when the polar bears came in October-November–well, those were the most popular tours.

AUTHOR: And how did you get to know Lukas Tanner so well?

RUBY: Well, his uncle Henry used to eat every night at our Café as he and my husband Rob were best friends. I don’t know why, but Henry never married. There was a girl back in Winnipeg but it didn’t work out. And when Lukas found out Henry had cancer he was on the next plane to Churchill and wanted to learn the business and help out. That kid had ZERO wilderness skills. (Ruby laughs) Mind you, he gave it a good try. He couldn’t split kindling but he learned fast.

AUTHOR: Henry really needed help fast by the sounds of it.

RUBY: Henry waited too long to reach out for help. Pancreatic cancer. Lukas was devastated, but he learned on his feet. The kid had had his heart broken back in Winnipeg but he threw himself into Guiding Star Enterprises and never looked back. He loved his uncle Henry and took it hard when he died. That boy turned into a man right before my eyes.

AUTHOR: Thank you, Ruby. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about Lukas or Kira?

RUBY: (She smiles) Kira is one special lady. I admire someone who’s gone through so much loss but hasn’t let it harden her. She’s tough but unbroken and I count her as a dear friend. And if I say anything else, I’d spoil any surprises the book might have, so I’d better keep quiet! (She puts a finger to her lips.) You’ll want to read the book.

AUTHOR: Thank you very much, Ruby, for your time. And please, can I have another piece of your famous pecan pie?
