Summary

In the still of a cool Colorado evening, the Circle J Ranch house burns to the ground, leaving Susannah Jones and her two brothers orphaned and homeless. Embittered by the tragedy, Susannah’s older brother grows increasingly cruel, leading Susannah to make the difficult choice to leave the last of her family behind to forge a new life for herself. It is the kindness of Dr. Kate, the woman physician in town, as well as a chance meeting with a rugged homesteader that give Susannah the strength she needs to escape.

When Joseph Iverson encounters the harassed young woman on his land one day, he has no thought but to provide the assistance she so clearly needs. Overcoming his shyness, he takes Susannah under his wing and agrees to a marriage of convenience to liberate her from her brother. As the pair works side by side, their mutual admiration deepens. But their happy existence is threatened all too soon by a series of “accidents” on the farm. With danger looming ever closer, Susannah and Joseph must discover who is bent on their destruction before the life and marriage they’ve built together goes up in flames.

My Review

SAVING SUSANNAH JONES is a story about the strength of a woman who finds herself faced with a bleak future and the rugged man who finds he needs to protect her. Sweet romance fans who enjoy their stories on the lighter side, with plenty of heart and a little bit of danger, may enjoy this one.

I couldn't help but like these characters. Susannah has kind of been pushed into a corner. She's lost the steadiness of her life and has an overbearing and controlling brother who doesn't have much concern for her happiness. She finds she's not safe anymore and must strike out on her own. Joseph happens upon her and can't leave her unprotected. I won't say much more as you can guess what happens from the story's premise, but there are some surprising twists in this one that kept things interesting. I enjoyed these characters and seeing how they worked things out. I didn't feel as much chemistry between the two as I would have liked, but it was still a sweet romance. There were also cameos from the main characters from HEART OF THE WEST, for those who read that story, but it isn't necessary to have read that story to enjoy this one. I did like reading Susannah's story and hope there will be more set in this town, maybe one too about that Ranger who comes through...

My only complaint is that some things felt they needed more development, particularly in the suspense aspect. There were things alluded to, but nothing came of. I also found some of the things that occurred just didn't quite work for me. It was almost as if there were plot points or scenes taken out, but then the parts that built up or supported those missing scenes weren't edited out.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I would have liked more development in aspects of this story, but I still enjoyed reading it.

About the Author

About my writing: I don't like to write candy for the brain. But I do like to try to make my books not only fulfilling, but entertaining. Candy is nice, but a meal of meat, potatoes, and veges can leave you more satisfied. My books give the reader a good taste of history and/or science along with a dash of mystery folded into the story.

About me: I've always loved writing, but haven't gotten serious until the past seven years. When I'm not writing, I like to garden, sew, fix up old houses, or anything else creative. My favorite movies are ones about history.
