Summary

With her past in shambles, how can she fashion a future of hope?

Catherine Dougall’s past of manipulation has left her future in threads. With a new faith, she longs to take the remnants of her life and make something beautiful, but shame, societies’ judgments, and the natural consequences of an unplanned pregnancy test her newfound hope. Dr. David Ross doesn’t help either. His kindness, sacrifice, and tenderness tempt her to impossible dreams. A fallen woman doesn’t merit a fairytale.

David Ross has made every effort to keep his life above reproach. His passion for the sick pump fresh purpose through his choices, but without financial support to maintain his war hospital, all is lost. When his notorious aunt offers an easy solution, David is tempted to give in to her demands, but his growing affection for the reformed flirt, Catherine Dougall, unwinds the careful wall around his heart and offers an unexpected choice.

When the worst of war tears them apart, can love renew the memory of what was lost or will tragedy steal away their hope forever.

From the beautiful Derbyshire countryside to the trenches of World War One, Catherine and David must learn to trust in a God who designs a masterpiece out of brokenness and fashions hope in the most unlikely places.

Guest Post: Character Spotlight

David Ross – redefining the thought of Peppermint since 1915.

There are some characters who are static and still good characters because of the part they play in the overarching story. Let’s take Captain America, for instance. He doesn’t have the massive character arc that Tony Stark/Ironman does, but he is still a good character and plays a vital role in the Marvel cinematic world. I would even dare to say that Elizabeth Bennet’s arc is not massive – she has one – but though her perspective changes and matures throughout the course of Pride and Prejudice, her basic character doesn’t.

David Ross is one of those characters. He’s such a steady and kind personality with a strong core beneath his gentle persona. His very ‘steadiness’ is what makes him a wonderful fit for the dynamic, expressive, and a little rebellious, Catherine Dougall.

Who is David Ross?

David Ross has an interesting cultural background. His dad is English, and his mom was Appalachian American. David received his medical training in medicine in England to become a physician, but his sister trained in the U.S. as a nurse and the joined the war effort when The Great War broke out. David’s family are aristocratic, though he is not titled and chose a profession rather than living as a gentleman (think Matthew Crawley in looks and demeanor 😊). He respects rules and his place in society, and is influenced by them, but not bound by them. Having someone in his life who helps him think outside the cultural box is a very good thing. His hardworking and somewhat introverted nature means that it may take him a little while to recognize the workings of his own heart because he is so focused on saving lives in the middle of a very unpredictable time in world history.

What do I love about David?

His kindness and his subtle sense of humor. AND, boy oh boy, when he becomes romantically interested in Catherine, his excellent focus takes on a swoony direction. David is a quiet, persistent type lover, who, when he makes up his mind, there is no going back. He is incredibly devoted and honorable, but in his “rightness” and “focus”, he could use a little nudge of creativity and spark. Catherine Dougall brings both in spades, along with some welcome and…unwelcome drama.

When a big tragedy happens near the end of The Thorn Keeper, the way David attempts to make things right is a testament of the goodness of who he truly is at the core.

Where do we read about David?

David is actually in all three of the Penned in Time books, which makes it all the more fun to watch his and Catherine’s relationship grow and change throughout all three books. They happen to be my favorite couple of this series.

What did YOU like about David? Or if you haven’t read the series, can you think of a hero you really enjoyed from books/movies who is more ‘static’ than ‘dynamic’?
