Guest Post: Holiday Traditions
By Nina Singh

Writing a holiday story is always so much fun for me. Though it can be a bit disorienting because often I find myself working on a Christmas book in the middle of July! But it serves as a great reminder of all the wonderful holiday traditions I have to look forward to in a few short months. This year in particular has been one in which I (and I’m sure many others) yearn for the familiar and comforting.

Baking and decorating cookies with the kids, hanging ornaments on the tree, the sounds of holiday songs and carols playing through the house at all hours – just some of the ways my family and I mark the days through December. A lot of these admittedly mundane family traditions often find their way into scenes in my holiday books. In Her Inconvenient Christmas Reunion, there’s a scene where the characters are hanging up holiday lights and the results are rather chaotic! Hanging lights never seems to go smoothly in our household either.

There’s something magical about coming up with a story about two people falling in love to begin with. To have it set during the festive holiday season adds another layer of enjoyment. Writing such a story brings back all the things I love about those weeks. Often, it can also lead to remembrances of lovely moments from Christmases past. Her Inconvenient Christmas Reunion was no exception.

So many things about the holidays give us a sense of comfort and hopefully no small amount of joy. That’s what tradition is all about after all, isn’t it?
