Excerpt
A jazzy melody snaked from the
secluded room to the hallway.
He paused with a hand on the
doorknob. While the room wasn’t marked off-limits with any sort of signage, he
had never encountered another crewmember or guest here without specific
arrangements. He hadn’t bothered to lock the doors. Had someone come to find
him? Every performer on deck demurred against the showcase role in the piano
bar. Someone downplayed his or her skill. He stretched his neck from one
shoulder to the other and eased the knot of tension.
Entering the room, he shut the door
as silently as possible. From his position, he couldn’t spot the player hidden
behind the baby grand piano. Whoever discovered the room had come across a
beautiful instrument not meant for amateurs. The mystery pianist was the
solution. He couldn’t afford to spook the person.
The delicate touch on the keys
echoed in the soft reverberation of the chords. The pianist was a professional.
The love imbued into the music was palpable. As he neared, he noted two things
simultaneously. The player relied on muscle memory instead of sheet music, and
she was the woman he’d met yesterday.
Frozen in place, he widened his
eyes. If he wanted, he couldn’t have voiced a greeting through the emotions
clogging his throat. With her fingers dashing over the ivories, she transformed
from a delicate beauty transformed into a woman of passion.
Third time’s a charm. He didn’t need distracting or
treacherous thoughts. Maybe she could help him. Clearing his throat loudly, he
paused, waiting for acknowledgment.
She snapped up her head, her blue
eyes widened, and her mouth gaped.
Meeting her gaze, he shared a
split-second flicker of recognition. At some point before this cruise, they
must have crossed paths. She looked so familiar.
