Summary

A man of his word

Dr. Bloom Freelander thought it was safe to breathe again when Detective Sam Larson put her abusive ex away for good. She's been moving on, running a private practice and providing psychiatry services to The Lemonade Stand women's shelter. But now that her ex is a free man, she's in danger once again.

Forced into protective custody, Bloom can't help but fall for her protector. But she has every reason to doubt the handsome detective's word. Sam broke his promise to her once. Who says he won't break it again—along with her heart this time?

Pet Therapy

Secondary characters…we kind of look over them. And yet…they are as integral to the story as plates and silverware are to dinner. They aren’t the food. You can have some meals without them. But overall, the experience would not be as full, as complete, as enjoyable and layered and delicious without dishes and utensils.

This is so true in The Promise He Made Her. There is more than one secondary character. Chantel Harris, a cop who actually had her own story that was out in March – Love by Association – is important to this story. She plays an onscreen role. I love her. I was glad to have her back. But in my mind, she’s not the secondary character that makes this book. She’s like a serving spoon, not the plate or glass. She’s a napkin, not the knife, fork or spoon.

The napkin, the plate, the glass, is played by a five-year-old Irish Setter, Lucy. I am a secret dog whisperer (I guess not so secret since I’m putting it out here) and I not only fell in love with Lucy, I trusted her to take this story to a deeper level. Lucy had so many responsibilities. I didn’t know it. She showed me. She was family to a broken man who didn’t know he was broken. She kept his jaded heart open. And she was healing to an abused woman. I won’t give it all away. I just wanted to give Lucy some public recognition. She gets it in the end of the book, too!

And today, I’d like to give my two writing companions their due. Taylor Marie, is a 5 pound princess who sits in my chair with me every single day. I have a regular, armed office chair and one of the arms has a microfiber bath mat over it, covered by a fleece blanket, and that is Taylor’s work space. Jerry is a 25 pound rescue cockapoo. After being badly mistreated as a puppy Jerry had to learn how to trust. How to let himself be loved. He teaches me every day. And the things he shows me go into every single one of my stories.

I’ve written books specifically about pet therapy (one is out this month as well – Sheltered in His Arms – in a bestselling author collection with Heather Graham. Sheltered in His Arms just released this month for the first time ever in audio book, too.) I know the healing qualities that dogs bring to us. I have very personal experience with these qualities. And I am thrilled to give these stars a post of their own. There is nothing secondary about them in my world.

So help me smile, here. Tell us about your pet and how he/she blesses your life! Or, if you’re familiar with pet therapy, give us some scoop!

I'm quite frankly a sucker for dogs, so I loved seeing these two from TTQ. We have a cute little Yorkie mix that makes up for his size with his personality. Do you have a pet at home? Do you like dogs in stories, either slightly involved or as a major part?
