Summary

Beautiful pre-med student Kari Evans believes she’s found the man of her dreams—right up until the moment she discovers he’s a two-timing cheat. Desperately gathering the pieces of her broken heart, she realizes that what she needs most is space to reconsider her future. A summer in Washington, DC, with her professional baseball player brother, Ben, sounds like just the change of scene she’s after. But if complicated romantic entanglements are what she’s trying to escape, she’s out of luck.

Ryan Strobel has had it with spotlight-seeking women. As third baseman for the Washington Nationals, he’s dealt with more than his fair share of opportunistic admirers—but his ex-fiancée, Brandi, may be the worst. When the woman refuses to take no for an answer, Ryan’s teammate Ben offers a crazy solution: Ben’s sister will pose as Ryan’s new girlfriend. Though an unlikely pair, Ryan and Kari find themselves getting surprisingly comfortable with the charade. Soon, the line between fact and fiction is blurred, and the very real feelings that develop between the couple are undeniable. But when faced with the interference of conniving exes, family objections, and the reality of their very different lives, are Ryan and Kari destined to strike out in the game of love?

My Review

CHANCE FOR HOME was a sweet romance between a pro baseball player and a regular girl who has dreams of becoming a doctor. Readers will enjoy the charming characters and the complex situation, while hoping for a happily-ever-after ending.

I loved CHANCES ARE that was about Kari's brother, Ben, and her best friend, Maya, which was released previously (they can be read by themselves, but it helped to already have read the other story). I was excited to get to go back to to this baseball world and see where the characters I'd already fallen in love with were doing. I really liked that there is a lot more baseball in this one as the girls attend a lot of the practices and games. It was a fun aspect of the story. I also really liked Ryan and Kari, who are the focal point and have some serious challenges ahead of them. Ryan's mom added some nice tension and became a delightful character. The romance was really sweet and I could feel the chemistry spike up from about the middle of the book to the end.

I only had two minor grievances with this one. There are a few places that were unrealistically dramatized, at least to me, dealing with both characters' exes. It was mostly in how Kari and Ryan react more than anything. The other thing was that initially I didn't feel a whole lot of chemistry or connection between the main characters. I was glad I kept going though, because that changed.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Overall, I really enjoyed this and am hoping that Abramson will be coming back to this world of baseball!

Summary

Maya Gupta is a survivor. After escaping an impending arranged marriage in India as a teenager, she has thrived in America. But now she faces her greatest challenge yet—cancer has invaded her life, and unless she finds a way to participate in a clinical trial in Washington, DC, this may be one battle she loses. When Maya’s best friend Kari offers Maya the lifeline of a place to stay—her brother’s currently vacant DC apartment—the young woman eagerly accepts and goes to meet her fate . . .

Ben Evans’s plans have changed, and he’s heading home for some much-needed rest and relaxation during his off-season in the major leagues. Upon arriving at his DC apartment, however, Ben is shocked to find Maya—his sister’s friend, who he hardly knows—in residence. He soon finds himself trapped between protecting his above-reproach reputation and searching for a way to help a woman he is coming to admire. When Maya’s fight to survive her disease becomes more complicated than ever, she and Ben scheme an extreme solution to her predicament that tests to what lengths they’re willing to go together to save Maya’s life.
