Chapter One, Part 3
She laughed at his indignation, then put a hand over
her mouth to muffle the sound. “I’m only quizzing you, Evan. I haven’t done
that sort of thing for at least a month.”
She chuckled at his raised brows. His departure for
the war had put an end to most of her pranks. Losing her friend and cohort, not
to mention her heartbreak at his absence, had taken the joy out of many of her
favorite pastimes. She’d settled for more mundane activities in his absence. Now
that he was back, she could finally breathe easy.
She indicated the group inside where Papa stood next
to Evan’s mother. “Look at your mother. Doesn’t she seem sad?”
Evan glanced over his shoulder at his mother, Mrs. Barnes.
Really, mother and son could almost pass for siblings. His mother hardly looked
old enough to have a twenty-five-year-old child. They both had the same dark
hair, tinged with chestnut lights. Mrs. Barnes’s kind of beauty normally
bestowed itself on younger women. Though her husband had passed on nearly two
years ago, she still wore gray, outdated gowns, but with such elegance that no
one offered a word of criticism. Mrs. Barnes stood near enough Papa that the
slightest movement from either would initiate a touch.
“I don’t think she’s sad,” Evan finally replied. “More
sober, certainly, with good reason.”
“She has suffered many losses.” Rowena looked up at
Evan’s familiar, yet changed, face. “So have you.”
Quietly, he said, “As have many, thanks to Boney.”
Rowena nodded. How Evan’s gentle mother withstood the
blow of losing a son in the war against Bonaparte, and then a husband, Rowena
could not imagine. Still, Evan had resigned his commission and come home whole
and hale to assume the estate and care for his mother and sisters. His return
had no doubt been a great comfort to the Barnes family.
