Summary
Sixteen-year-old Zadie’s first mistake was telling the boy she liked she could bring her dead sister back to life. Her second mistake was actually doing it.
When Zadie accidentally messes with the Reaper’s Rite that should have claimed her sister Mara, things go horribly wrong. Mara isn’t the same anymore—Zadie isn’t even sure she’s completely human, and to top it off, a Reaper is determined to collect Mara’s soul no matter what. Now Zadie must figure out how to defeat her sister’s Reaper, or let Mara die … this time for good.
My Review
I really like the cover for this one and think it's a great read for this time of the year (October). I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, so let's get right into it...
DISLIKES:
- I wanted a lot more information and that information to also be given to Mara and Zadie. I don't like it when characters are kept in the dark for, really, no reason and that's how I felt about this. It just made things unnecessarily difficult.
- I also thought that Lilura should have been doing more. Why doesn't she help to stop Mara or the Reaper initially? Why does she limit herself with just trying to train Zadie?
- Then there's Mara. No one really talks to her or tries to prevent what she is doing. Things just continue to build up.
LIKES:
- I liked Zadie's character and I really liked her best friend, Naomi. I also thought Gavin and Chase were both interesting, although I thought one of them was up to something. I won't say here if I was right or not.
- I liked the close-knit family that Zadie has. There are plenty of secrets, but they all seriously love and try to be there for each other.
- I liked the whole premise of the story and the history behind where Zadie gets her powers. I though the whole idea that a reaper made a deal allowing him one year to reap a Vila's powers was very creative and intriguing.
- I also liked that the battle with the reaper wasn't easy. It didn't go as planned, wasn't quick, and that everything didn't just tie up all nicely. It made it feel more authentic that way.
I would recommend this for those who really enjoy reading Paranormal YA.
Content: A few mild swear words and some violence.

I'm a Philippine-born American living in Germany with my husband and two teens. I write young adult books that usually have some element of magic or the supernatural in them. I also like to read those kinds of books. Aside from reading, I like movies, chocolate, take-out, coffee, traveling, and having fun with my friends and family. I've also been known to make a pretty sweet cupcake. I tend to sing sometimes, too, so keep me away from your Karaoke bars.
