Summary

She sells priceless antiques. He sells livestock by the pound. Is he really the man to make a bid for her heart?

After helping her grandfather at their Boston auction house, Miranda Wimplegate discovers she’s accidentally sold a powerful family’s prized portrait to an anonymous bidder. Desperate to appease the people who could ruin them forever, they track it to the Missouri Ozarks and make an outlandish offer to buy the local auction house and all its holdings before the painting can move again.

Upon crossing the country, however, Miranda and her grandfather discover their new auction house doesn’t deal in fine antiques, but in livestock. And its frustratingly handsome manager, Wyatt Ballentine, is annoyed to discover his fussy new bosses don’t know a thing about the business he’s single-handedly kept afloat. Faced with more heads of cattle than they can count–but no mysterious painting–Miranda and Wyatt form an unlikely but charged partnership to try and prevent a bad situation from getting worse.

My Review

AT LOVE'S BIDDING began with a heartwarming scene as Miranda helps some poor working boys by giving them treats and scaring some bullies off. Amidst this scene is a mysterious lady and a painting that is sold that shouldn't have been. The story continues with the same heartwarming feel, but there is also plenty of humor, some ridiculously awkward and hilarious moments, lots of tension (both in frustration, temper, and romance) between families and acquaintances, and some inspirational moments when the characters are doing their best to do as they should. The story was engaging, entertaining, and sweet from beginning to end.

The characters were fabulously flawed. Miranda begins rather timid. She's not sure when she should speak up, if at all. She tries to exert herself and sometimes gets burned for doing so. She wants to remain hidden while also showing her family that she can be successful. Wyatt is as rough and tumble as they come, at least that's what Miranda sees at first, but as she gets to know him a different side of him appears. Wyatt is hard-working, honest, honorable, strong, handsome, and he has a personal interest in the auction house and in Miranda's life. They're a fabulous combination. There were other characters who added to the story as well and gave it quite a bit of color. I loved Betsy especially. She was one of the highlights and I'm looking forward to reading her story next when she's all grown up.

The plot was also hilarious and intriguing. There was quite a bit going on, which kept things interesting and drove the story. The author let the characters struggle multiple times with different things and the happily-ever-after didn't easily come. I liked that she continued to let the characters deal with their doubts - that they didn't just miraculously get everything solved for them.

Overall, AT LOVE'S BIDDING was a highly enjoyable story. There were sizzling moments full of chemistry, laugh-out-loud moments, moments that inspired, lovable characters, and a plot with some twists to keep the story interesting. A perfect story for inspirational historical romance fans.
