Summary

Her best bet is to stay away

Was Olivia hearing this right? The one man in Indian Lake she'd found truly intriguing since, well, forever—the hopelessly handsome heir to the region's most successful farming operation, Rafe Barzonni—was involved in horse racing? That made him, and her sudden attraction, downright dangerous. He wasn't just out of her league. He was a gambler. Like her father. With the shame of her father's racetrack betting addiction still haunting her, Olivia can't be part of that world. Rafe's world. She can't trust him, or his magnetism. But there's something deep in his incredible blue eyes that keeps drawing her closer…

Character Snapshots
SNAPSHOT OF RAFE.
Rafe Barzonni has spent his life trying to live up to his father’s high standards. He diligently works his father’s farm as the dutiful son. Rafe is honest, but prideful. Handsome, but not conceited. He is generous and deeply loving of his mother and brothers. His youngest brother, Nate, ran off to join the Navy right after high school and became a cardiac surgeon. His older brother, Gabe, dreamed of his own vineyard and fulfilled all his dreams when he married Liz Crenshaw. Rafe, the second eldest, has never wanted to leave his father. He and his father share a love of race horses and each spurs the other to higher aspirations for their horse. When Angelo Barzonni dies in Rafe’s arms, Rafe is flooded with guilt and remorse. He feels he should have saved his father. Beat on his chest harder. Had more medical training. Something. Once his father dies, Rafe must re-think all his life plans. When Olivia enters his life, he’s still angry that his father died, guilt and grief-stricken. He’s a bit surprised that she makes him paint a golden glow around his future, at the same time he senses resistance from her that he doesn’t understand.

SNAPSHOT OF OLIVIA.
Olivia Melton’s father was a gambling addict and lost the family savings at the race track. He abandoned his wife and daughter and has never returned. Olivia and her mother, Julia, struggled through very rough days afterward but together they started the Indian Lake Deli and Catering. Working side by side, mother and daughter have mutual respect and deep love. Olivia has shown exceptional talent for photography and though Julia has encouraged Olivia to send her photos to magazines for publication, Olivia is afraid of rejection. As long as she pretends that she will approach publishers in the future, she’s been “safe” from heartache. When Olivia and her mother are hired to cater Angelo Barzonni’s funeral, Olivia is thrown together with Rafe. She’s met Rafe a few times in the past, usually at Austin McCreary’s house (KATIA’S PROMISE) when she catered functions there, but she’s always been invisible to handsome Rafe.

When Olivia discovers that Rafe intends to race his Thoroughbred in the Indian Lake Hospital Horse Race, Olivia’s long-buried terrors about gambling surface and she finds that she’s falling in love with the one man in the world who could hurt her more than any.
