Author Interview

1. What is your motivation behind The SEAL’s Return?

It’s the fourth in my Home to Covenant Falls series about veterans – men, women and even animals – who return home from the battlefield. The first, I thought, would be a stand-alone book about Josh Manning, a troubled and guilt-haunted Ranger returning home with a military dog as damaged as his new owner. It was inspired by a story in the New York Times about military dogs who came home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Josh’s best friend, the dog’s handler, died saving my hero’s life and left him a cabin in a small Colorado town. The cabin and the town – along with the town’s lady mayor – helped them both heal.

When I finished Josh’s story, I didn't want to leave Covenant Falls. I had fallen in love with the town and its quirky and good hearted citizens. I simply wanted to live there. Since I couldn’t do that, the next best thing was to revisit it.

Other stories started forming in my head.

Josh’s cabin was left to another veteran, this time a chopper pilot. He was followed by a battlefield surgical nurse.

And then it was time for my Navy SEAL, the fourth in the series. I’ve always wanted to write a book about a Navy SEAL. The training is the most difficult of any service and they do extraordinary deeds.   My SEAL is Jubal Pierce, and he’ll always be one of my favorite heroes. Half of his life has been in the SEALs. His total identity is being a SEAL. When a mission gone bad leaves him physically unable to continue as a SEAL he is lost and rudderless.

It takes a troubled kid, a buckskin Quarter Horse named Jacko and a lady doctor to make him realize he still has something to offer.

2. What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?

That they respect the military and reach out with a helping hand and understanding heart. And that love can often conquer even the greatest obstacles.

3. Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?

I think it’s when Jubal helps with the birth of a colt:

To Jubal, it was a miracle. Life beginning. He’d seen so much life ending, often in terrible ways. “It was . . .” Jubal stopped, unable to express the feelings surging through him. The colt and mother together touched him as nothing else had.

Jubal swallowed hard. An odd tug pulled at his heart. And a rare indecisiveness. He knew a lot about survival and weapons and killing. Not so much about something so new and innocent. . . For the first time he could remember, Jubal was at peace in his world.

4. If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

You never know when you’ll find your home.

5. Share something about you that is unique – maybe about how/where you write.

It’s probably not unique to most writers, but curiosity is a compulsion with me. I’ll start researching one subject – how much money does a Navy SEAL make? – and end up hours later following the Yellow Brick Road to quite different topics. Google is, quite simply, my downfall.
