WE STAND AT THE EDGE of the field, surveying the destruction. The plants are already wilting and starting to brown around the edges. A fourth of Mr. Baron’s fields looks like this—or will begin to by tomorrow. The plants are dead too late in the season to even think about replanting them. This section was planted last, so they would have melons to sell in August.
“Are you okay, John?” Mrs. Baron asks.
He pushes the air out through his teeth, “I’m trying to think about Job and reminding myself it could be far worse.”
About the Author
April Smith grew up spending summers working on her best friend’s family watermelon farm and she was one of those watermelon queens she writes about. She has her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in the Art of Teaching.
