Summary
Nikki has loved Mike for as long as she can remember (as early as age seven!) Mike has his own past hurts to resolve, having lost both parents in an accident when he was fourteen. He’s tried to escape those painful memories by leaving New York and starting a new life on the West Coast. New facts indicate, years later, that his parents’ deaths might not have been an accident.
At Christmas Mike comes back to New York for the first time in three years. He and Nikki rekindle the friendship they had as children and share their newfound faith. Under a Christmas moon romantic sparks fly . . . but their mutual attraction takes an unexpected detour.
Nikki is devastated, believing her one chance for a relationship with Mike is over. She impulsively takes a one-year teaching opportunity in Paris, so that she can face her own fears and get over Mike.
If Mike and Nikki run away, how can they find each other again?
Author Interview
Would you share more about the characters from ONE DECEMBER?
Both main characters in One December have a specific area to grow in that they are unaware of at the start. This creates problems in their lives as well as their ability to get together. Nikki is a young high school teacher, just two years out of college, living near home. Mike, on the other hand, fled his hometown due to painful memories, so the opening of the book finds him living in San Francisco. What brings them back together is their long-term friendship and the history they have together, as well as their faith, which they each found later in their lives.
If Nikki and Mike were to pick one favorite thing about New York, what would it be?
At the start of the book Mike would probably say his favorite thing about New York is leaving it! His heart changes along the way. Nikki loves the fact that she has history there and family ties, which mean a lot to her.
What would Nikki and Mike say their favorite thing is about each other?
Nikki might not be able to articulate it very well, since she has loved Mike for so long! She loves the fact that she’s always felt tied at the heart with him, able to communicate below the surface. Mike would say he appreciates Nikki’s courage in facing her fears and taking baby steps to overcome them. He also loves her heart for the teenagers she teaches.
What did you enjoy most about writing ONE DECEMBER?
It was a story that had been on my heart for years. It went through several versions until arriving where it is today. I enjoy communicating timeless truths through the lives of characters in a non-preachy way, things that could resonate with readers. Maybe they would see themselves in the characters. I also like writing about “real” people, that is, people who are really human, people we could know or even be ourselves. They struggle in the modern world to make good decisions and achieve what their hearts long for, even making mistakes along the way.
What is your favorite thing about second chance romances?
I love the fact that we grow. We aren’t static, unless we choose to be. God makes sure we grow in ways that are good for us. This can be painful. But often it also can lead us to be more suitable for certain people than we would have otherwise been. Hindsight offers so much in the way of increased perception and humility, both of which make us better romantic partners as well as friends.
What are you working on next?
All of my books have been stand-alones up to now. My last novel was Prodigals in Provence and for the first time I’m going to do a “part two” to a book. My new book (which doesn’t have a title yet!) picks up on the story of Lauren, the best friend of the Prodigals heroine, Bree Sorenson.
About the Author
I write inspirational romance novels and women's fiction with a twist: My characters sometimes go places. This led me to create the Love on the Move collection of novels. Readers can take a trip with them and experience their journeys. They can see how the characters' lives unfold as they make decisions to trust God (or not) in their next steps, learning about themselves and their faith, and finding love along the way!
I currently live in North Carolina but spent over a decade in France (where some of my books take place.) I also write non-fiction and teach French. In my free time, I enjoy doing pottery and salsa dancing.
