YA Thriller, Suspense
Hardcover & ebook, 256 Pages

Summary

Ari Sullivan is alive—for now.

She wakes at the bottom of a cistern, confused, injured and alone, with only the shadowy recollection of a low-pitched voice and a gloved hand. No one can hear her screams. And the person who put her there is coming back. The killer is planning a gruesome masterpiece, a fairytale tableau of innocence and blood, meticulously designed.

Until now, Ari was happy to spend her days pining for handsome, recent-arrival Stroud Bellows, fantasizing about their two-point-four-kids-future together. Safe in her small hometown of Dempsey Hollow. But now her community has turned very dangerous—and Ari may not be the only intended victim.

Interview

Would you tell us a little more about the main characters from BLOOD WILL OUT?

The two main characters are 17-year old Ari Sullivan, a slightly naïve girl who doesn’t exactly welcome change. She’d rather everything in her small town remain the same as it ever was. When the book begins, she has just regained consciousness at the bottom of a cistern with no recollection of how she got there.

The other main character is a fledgling serial killer who remains unnamed and unidentified until the end. This is someone who is just starting out. We first meet them when they are nine years old, and over the course of the book we see their evolution into a killer. I wrote that character in first person so the reader can really get inside their head.

I’m rather curious about the title of the book… would you tell us why that title was chosen and how it relates to the story (without spoiling anything)?

This is something the killer’s foster father says when trying to explain why some people are just no good. It’s an old expression that basically means that one’s character is determined by their birth parents and eventually someone’s true nature will reveal itself. So if your mother was a criminal you also will be a criminal. Nature versus nurture. It’s a terrible and inaccurate belief. Then of course the book is about a murderer – someone who wants all the blood to come out.

What is one of your favorite psychological thrillers to read or watch (or both)?

There’s a series of books (by Val McDermid) which was also filmed for TV called Wire in The Blood about a police detective and a criminal psychologist. I find them terrifying.

What songs did you listen to the most while writing this story?

I listened to a lot of Solange, Tom Waits, and Antony and the Johnsons.

What is your favorite thing about living in Nova Scotia?

It’s very beautiful here. A wild ocean, jagged cliffs, woods and great beaches. It’s a much slower pace than NY and the Bay Area in California, which is where I’ve spent most of my life. Living here gives me the time to write and fills my brain with creativity.

What are you working on next?

I have another YA thriller coming out next September with Penguin Teen. It’s a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat, female-centric adventure set in an isolated mountain community.
