Summary
Susan is the new girl—she’s sharp and driven, and strives to meet her parents’ expectations of excellence. Malcolm is the bad boy—he started raising hell at age fifteen, after his mom died of cancer, and has had a reputation ever since.
Susan’s parents are on the verge of divorce. Malcolm’s dad is a known adulterer.
Susan hasn’t told anyone, but she wants to be an artist. Malcolm doesn’t know what he wants—until he meets her.
Love is messy and families are messier, but in spite of their burdens, Susan and Malcolm fall for each other. The ways they drift apart and come back together are testaments to family, culture, and being true to who you are.
Guest Post; Favourite Things
By Tanaz Bhathena
If Susan and Malcolm from THE BEAUTY OF THE MOMENT were to compile lists of their favourite things, this is how I imagine they’d answer:
Susan:
1) Drawing caricatures of people I know. The more outlandish, the better.
2) Amma’s achappam (which are amazing Kerala style rosette cookies that she only makes on special occasions)
3) Long phone conversations with my best friend, Alisha.
4) Eating shawarma next to the Red Sea.
5) Dates with Malcolm. (Oh, all right, kissing him, too!)
Malcolm:
1) kissing susan
2) okay, so #1 was a joke, i’m not that shallow.
3) wait, susan, don’t get mad! i didn’t mean that i DON’T like kissing you…
4) shut up, steve. you, too, ahmed.
5) maybe I should give up this list while I’m at it.
