Desperate to save her brother from a dangerous life at sea, and herself from being married off to a detestable old gentleman, Lizzy knows there is only one choice left—they must run.

Lizzy and Thomas sneak away and find refuge in an abandoned cabin. There they remain hidden until fate acquaints Lizzy with Mr. Barton, a charming gentleman who is immediately intrigued by the mysterious young woman. My Review

ESCAPE TO EVERLY MANOR is one of those stories that keep readers turning pages in delight as it also pulls a range of emotions from them. Memorable characters, sweet romance, suspense, and siblings who will do anything for each other make this story one that readers will remember long after they've turned the last page.

How I adored these characters! Lizzy's desire to protect her brother at any cost was quite admirable. Here she is with no experience of working for herself, managing money, or being anything but a refined lady and she makes a plan to escape to fight for her and her brother's happiness. Her care for her brother pushes her on and keeps her hope alive. I also loved Thomas. He was such a wonderful boy with his own vulnerabilities and strengths. Just a dear. Then there's Barton... what a fine figure of a man he makes. I don't mean just in the physical sense, but in his work ethic, strength, and compassion for others. I loved seeing Lizzy and Barton dance around each other and both of their interactions with Thomas.

I pretty much loved every minute of the first half of this story. There was never a dull moment. You also could feel a constant underlying thread of suspense, that was handled really well. I loved the way the relationships developed and the constant tension in one form or another that kept things interesting. However, the second half felt was a different story. It felt overly dramatic and the romance didn't feel as genuine, as did the circumstances. Some things didn't make sense to me and I just couldn't reconcile them. However, the ending was very sweet after a harrowing ordeal.

I'd like to note how lovely this book is. The cover is perfect for the story, then there are these beautiful designs at the beginning of each chapter, and some embossing on the back (when turned towards the light, the design on the back reflects the light). This is something this publisher does with all it's historical romance books, but this particular book especially stood out to me. It makes it feel like its own treasure and something that deserves a place on coveted book shelves.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This story included a romance that is sweet but also with plenty of chemistry, a strong heroine but one who is also vulnerable, a dashing leading man with an honorable heart, and plenty of suspense, adventure, and a slue of other characters to entertain the reader. I did have some issues with the second half of the story, but I think most sweet historical romance readers will enjoy this one.

Content: Some violence, but clean.

About the Author

Chalon Linton was first introduced to Jane Austen by a dear friend and now she can’t get enough of handsome men in tailcoats. Her intrigue in the genre stems from a nostalgic longing for manners, wit, and true love. Fortunately, Chalon found her dashing gentleman, married him, and now lives happily ever after in Southern California.
